I think i'll give dragon age 2 a replay not sure if i should play DA1 first or just DA 2 but i want to try rogue or mage since i never played all the way through with either class on DA 1 or 2 i always did either heavy hitter or tank warrior.

Try both and see which one you prefer?
Or just play both?

Mage and rogue are pretty different and all the opinions people will give you will be largely just that- opinions.

Mage and especially forcemage allows you to take a more controller role, changing the shape of the battlefield whether it be by crowd control or using powerful aoes like firestorm.
This means that fights can be over without the enemy ever getting close.
They also can destealth enemies the easiest- and that's probably a trick you'll need to figure out reasonably fast because assassins can wreak havoc on your fragile little mage.
Mage Hawkes are also the only class to get dual haste throughout the game, helping to make up for any dps loss from not been a rogue.

While mage spells do deal a lot of damage, their autoattacks come no-where close to that of a rogue. And that is probably the main incentive of a rogue.
Rogues play a more single target elimination sort of role. Basically, both archers and DW rogues simply target the more troublesome enemies and kill them right from the start. This works on the premise that if the enemy is dead you don't even need any crowd control.
Rogues have the highest dps and spike damage and play a little more like warriors than mages (so you should become accustomed to it faster).

When you get a well-built rogue on haste (especially dual haste + primeval rune) you become a completely unstoppable whirlwind of destruction. It's awesome.
On the other hand, when you play a mage you get access to fun little spells like walking bomb which allow you to explode enemies- I mean, how could you go wrong when there's explosions?

So yeah, basically try them out maybe or even watch a few of the gameplay videos out there (e.g. Arelex's guides on rogues and mages have vids for both) to see what they play like.
It might not look exactly the same due to no-pause play but essentially you'll be able to see the difference in what they can do. :)

"Mage Hawkes are also the only class to get dual haste throughout the game, helping to make up for any dps loss from not been a rogue."

Don't other classes get double-haste too when bethany's around (act 1, late act 3 and legacy)?

"On the other hand, when you play a mage you get access to fun little spells like walking bomb which allow you to explode enemies- I mean, how could you go wrong when there's explosions?"

When you're in melee range (like using grave robber) and playing on nightmare? XD

Yeah, but bethany isn't around very much. And most of the fun fights (e.g. for speed running) happen in act 2. Hence 'throughout'. But of course a rogue hawke will have a much higher dps when they have also have access to dual haste.

Having enemies explode on you adds to the fun. Where's the fun without any risk?

Good point and I agree. I was just stating that for players that don't like resets/dying. ^_^
