As great as a game can be, the ending can make or break it. Which were the top endings of all time?

Super Metroid

After seemingly destroying the mother brain once again, the creature arises in an even more hideous and terrifying form. At the last moment before being obliterated, the metroid  sacrifices itself and bestows upon you an untold amount of power to finish off the disturbing creature. After cleansing the planet of the beast, you quickly escape towards the surface(possibly saving the more friendly creatures if you so chose), and just barely surviving as you blast out into the cold abyss of space. In the 16-bit era, that's one hell of an ending.

Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne
Everything about Warcraft III's story was epic, but the ending to the frozen throne is by far the most memorable. Crippling illidan in the frozen wastes of northrend, arthas continues his unholy march up to the frozen throne, where the ancient orc Ner'Zhul awaits to merge with the death knight. Slicing the Icy pillar in 2 and picking up the crown. The ending is best summed up in 4 words:

"Now...we are one."

Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots
Not only was it the best ending, it was probably the longest - the cinematics likely went for over a half an hour by the time you reached the end credits. Yet it was an ending that concluded questions that had been lurking since the beginning of the MG series, and would likely bring quite a few tears to the eye.

Heavy Rain
Say what you may about the game itself, but the ending(s) of heavy rain were literally molded by every  decision and key moment in Heavy rain. Who lived or died, whether ethan and madison formed a romance, forming up to around 18 endings. Although chrono trigger had coined the popularity of multiple possible endings, but heavy rain really made it feel like it had more emotional strength to it.

Games Least Likely to make the list on the thread:
Halo 2
Diablo
Fallout 3

Prince of Persia 2008 - After spending the entire game helping Elika to seal Ahriman, the Prince decides to undo all their work and free the Dark God in exchange for Elika's life. Not a happy ending to be sure, but a great conclusion nonetheless.

What is one grain of sand in the desert? What is one grain of sand in the storm?

Red Dead Redemption - John Marston is dead, but the story does not end there. His son Jack, takes up his six shooters and goes hunting for the federal agent who gunned him down. And John Marston's dream of a peaceful life for him and his family is shattered when Jack guns down Agent Ross. The endless circle of violence continues.

Dragon Age Origins - The Sacrifice ending. I like it when the Warden survives as much as anyone, but the sacrifice for me is a better ending by far. Heroic and tragic at the same time.

Baldur's Gate 2: Shadows of Amn - The Bhaalspawn has defeated Jon Irenicus, and we get to watch the sadist who'd been tormenting your character the whole game get his just desserts.

Baldur's Gate 2: Throne of Bhaal - The God ending. The Bhaalspawn has slain the dark priestess Amelissan, and makes the choice of absorbing all of his dead father's essence and ascending to godhood. Whether you become a good or evil god is dependent on your choices. Still, a satisfying conclusion.

I'm pretty sure I have more examples, but I can't think of them right now. Will post more when I am able.

My favourite ending has to be the ME1 last mission on the citadel.

The combination of the cinematics, music and action sequences were the best i have seen so far in an rpg, it was pure epic in my opinion and i would give them a score of 9.8 out of 10.

Metro 2033 The good one. When you realise you just saved an entire race from misguided vengeance. Sadly it's not canon.

Fallout New Vegas Dead Money. "Finding it though that's not the hard part... it's letting go.."

and to think it probably wont get a sequel

now i think that ending is bad, but the game was great

I'm going to go with Braid when you get to the Princess and with no where to go you have to rewind

Recently, The Witcher 2 has one of the best and most memorable endings to me. Talking and drinking vodka with Letho, and walking away. Twas brilliant.

best ending in videogame imho is dragon quest when the main character and tristam sail off into the sunset, leaving the world they knew behind them to new horizons.

Hmm... I can't think of a single one so I'll list my fave endings.

Mass Effect 2: The suicide mission is epicz, nuff said.

VTM: Bloodlines: Because it can be such a TROLOLOLOL ending...

Dragon Age Origins: Can't quite say why, but the ending (DR or Redeemer) always makes me feel so warm and fuzzy inside.

Others... GTA III, GTA San Andreas, Assassin's Creed (yes, I love that ending), The Longest Journey, Bioshock, Braid (GENIUS ending), Mass Effect 1.

Agreed on MGS4 and Heavy Rain. in HR, Lauren's scene at the killer's grave was very moving.

Red Dead Redemption had a fantastic ending that almost made me shed a manly tear.

I was also a fan of Enslaved's ending. The music really carried that one.

US in DAO was very sad when I first got it with my HN who romanced Leliana. It was great, but I swore never to get it with her again. I was damn depressed for a day after that.
*changed DR to US because I wasn't paying bloody attention*

The Sims /trollface

For realsies, Baldur's Gate II: Throne of Bhaal and Planescape: Torment are on my list. This is a hard topic, so I don't know that I can identify a single "best" ending. But yeah, ToB, PS:T, Riven... others as I think of them :P

I think the best ending would be the beginning of DA2.

Fallout 1

I won't even try to name a "Best" ending because there are a lot of really good ones...but the ending of Fallout 1 did have a great impact on me from a Player Character standpoint. Everything you go through to save your Vault and then...well, don't want to spoil it.

If you lost anyone on the Suicide Mission in ME2 then there's that short part where you see the Caskets on the Cargo Bay deck...my 1st playthrough, I lost Tali and it was a sad moment.

DAO's Ultimate Sacrifice ending was moving, even if it didn't matter in Awakenings.

Fear not, for apparently Gaz is Ghost in MW2 - but then he died anyway...

Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. The ending is absolutely crushing, and you can't help but sympathise with both Big Boss and The Boss. After having completed the game for the first time, I actually felt somewhat depressed for a few days afterwards. It's powerful stuff. I think it also functions extremely well as the former's Start of Darkness.

Silent Hill 2. Specifically, the "In Water" ending. It's heartbreakingly tragic, and provides a satisfying conclusion to the character arcs of both James and Mary, albeit one that is hauntingly dark and depressing. Mary's Letter is the icing on a powerful and emotionally resonant cake.
