Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater
The drama between The Boss and her apprentice is so strong and intense. Throughout the game you'll always wonder why she did what she did. In the end, when it all comes crashing down to the conclusion, you'll learn that whatever she did it was all for her country. She was a true hero, loyal to the end, and you were forced to kill her. The ending where Big Boss visits her grave, as EVA narrates The Boss's story in the background is beautiful. It truly brings tears to my eyes, and thus I consider it to be one of the greatest endings to a video game.

I also enjoyed the endings of the following games, which I can think of: Origins, MGS4, inFamous 2(Good ending), Heavy Rain, Kotor, Indigo Prophecy, L.A. Noire.

Heavy Rain

One ending of Heavy Rain in particular is definitely one of the most emotional endings to a game I've ever experienced. (Basically, make sure Lauren dies, have Ethan get together with and forgive Madison, make sure all playable characters make it to the end, but have Madison get arrested before she can get to Ethan and have Norman die in the final battle and have Ethan save Shaun. Then grab a box of tissues and enjoy.)

Other than that the ending of the first Kingdom Hearts as well as Final Fantasy X got my heart racing. (can you tell I'm a fan of sad endings? :P

One of the most surprising endings to me was probably Silent Hill: Shattered Memories (Love Lost ending) huge twist at the end.

 Underdog vote here: The Saboteur.

Say what you want about the gameplay, but the last bits leading up to the Eiffel Tower was bloody brilliant.

Saboteur was an overlooked game. The ending had a slight cheesiness to it, but it worked for what it was. Besides, he's a lovable rapscallion who blows up ****s - why wouldn't you root for him? :-)

Fidget: Trust me, the most brutal ending was having shaun die, but have ethan and madison still alive and in love. The ending for that is downright heart-wrenching.

DAO. Loved all the endings, especially the Wardens Death. The Epilogue screens were icing on the cake.

ME1- The whole part from opening the relays to let the fleet in to save the Ascension, to taking down Sovereign. Just awesome. Epic in the truest sense.

All of the Assassins Creed games - Just captivating.

NWIN2 - Gut wrenching but brilliant.

C&C - The first game. Starting with General Shepards ragged, exhausted self "We've found him..." Also Nod's campaign, choosing which Icon to blow up. With Kane beaming proudly while offering it to you.

Oh yeah, the "Tears in Rain" ending is considered to be the saddest by most people, and it definitely comes close, but for me the last scene before the "epilogues" when Ethan carries Shaun out breaks my heart even more. Just for Ethan to have gone through so much only for it to end that way is horrilbe. But yeah, at least in the ending I described Shaun's still alive, so that does make it a little "happier" than the "Tears in Rain" epilogue.

It is one of the best zombie stories ever conceived. I will never forget that escape from Raccoon City.

MGS 4 had a very touching ending. MGS 3 was also good. I also liked Half Life 2 ending and Mass Effect one.

Malak: Im... [cough] impossible. I... I cannot be beaten. I am the Dark Lord of the Sith.

Revan: No Malak. I am the true Sith Master!

Malak: Yes... I cannot deny it any longer. [cough] You are the one who deserves... who deserves to be the Dark Lord.

You were the one who found the first Star Map on Dantooine, Revan. [cough] It was you who led us on our quest for the Star Forge. I only followed in your wake. I tried to usurp your rule, to steal the title of Sith Master from you. But now I understand... the destiny is yours, Revan. Not mine.

You... you are Darth Revan, Lord... [cough] Lord of the Sith. And I... I am nothing...

Revan: The apprentice has learned his final lesson.

Malak: And so it ends as I somehow always knew it must: in darkness.

---

KotOR's dark side ending was awesome. Far better than the light side ending which was almost a carbon copy of "Star Wars" with getting praised and receving a medal. Watching the Republic fleet get overrun, seeing the Sith army praise Revan like the dutiful fanatics they are, and wrapping up with that shot of thousands of capital ships flying on to conquer, with the Star Forge in tow, was great.

In terms of evil playthroughs, I thought "Mask of the Betrayer" and "Jade Empire" were the only games with a conclusion as satisfying. They are both at least as epic in scope. I picked KotOR since it was the first game I finished as a scumbag. That was on my first playthrough no less.

There are several other games I played with great endings, but I'm feeling punchy today. :P

I loved the endings to Mass Effect and Mass Effect 2, and even the stupid noble sacrifice ending of Dragon Age: Origins was damn good. But to me nothing will ever come close to the wonderful, wide-eyed sense of achivement I had when I destroyed the Death Star on the old Star Wars arcade game when I was about seven... nothing has ever come close to making feel like as much of big goddamn heroine as that did.

I think an honorable mention should go to F.E.A.R. 2 though...

"Mommy..."

I swear, I was like this for hours afterwards -

Prince of Persia 2008 - After spending the entire game helping Elika to seal Ahriman, the Prince decides to undo all their work and free the Dark God in exchange for Elika's life. Not a happy ending to be sure, but a great conclusion nonetheless.

What is one grain of sand in the desert? What is one grain of sand in the storm?

This was damning when you findout that is what you are doing, and being forced to do it. I didn't enjoy playing the whole game that much, but this ending made it worth it.

Er....  You mean Neverwinter Nights 2?

If so....  I would sorta agree with that, if  it wasn't  simply a slideshow narrated by  an amateur voice actor reading directly from  a piece of paper and sounding like  he  really wanted to get  the  assignment over  with as fast as possible.  I  couldn't stomach to listen to it.  It was horrible.

If you're not talking about NWN2 though, then  oops, my apologies.

Anyway...  Throne of Bhaals ending was amazing, as was Torment's  "merge" ending.  I'd have to rank those two at the top, with DA:O's and Witcher 2's a close 2nd and 3rd respectively.

ME2. The panic I felt when I thought I'd got Garrus and Miranda killed followed by the relief when they survived has rarely been matched.

Red Dead Redemption.

The final few hours ending included of MGS4 were epic and draining.

I'll second Resident Evil 2, but I'd also say Resident Evil 1, flying off to safety as the sunrises after a night of absolute hell.

I liked the understatement of Shenmue also, beating up a freak then going on a boat to Hong Kong with little fanfare was brilliantly fitting.

Bit of an odd one but I'm going to count it, winning the Stanley Cup in my first season of Be a Pro mode in NHL 09. No game has ever even come close to the ridiculous drama of the final 1 minute 10 seconds of game seven. Twice they took the lead, twice I single handedly equalised, the last one coming with 2 seconds on the clock. We then won the game in overtime.

Definitely Red Dead Redemption. How can you NOT feel sorry for the guy? Especially if you played a playthrough with high honor like I did.

Both Bioshock's, but mainly Bioshock 2 which I just beat a couple days ago. Very sad ending.

Mass Effect 2 just for the epic scale of it.

Fallout 1 has a great ending, very fitting to the post-apocalyptic world.
Dark Side ending in KotOR- I was like that for quite some time after finishing it:

My honorable mention goes to Lego Star Wars: The Original Trilogy- not a classical ending, but collecting the last 99th gold brick was worth all the hours I spent on this game.

I think ME1 still holds this position for me. The last stage on the Citadel is the very definition of epic. TW2 comes in at a close second. I love the ladybug scene, and the different ways things can pan out.

That was the single best ending of all time for any video game. The story for Silent Hill 2 was amazing. I'm not sure why they didn't use that one for the movie. My wife isn't even a gamer and she cried.

How about Wing Commander 3's fail ending? Actually, the whole Proxima-Sol sequence is pretty good.

The win ending was OK too.
