And here is some encouriging information from Fernando Melo that i found on this thread.

"The decision of whether to have a set character in the style of DAII, or multiple origins a la
Dragon Age: Origins will be based on fan feedback."

Do you know what this means? It means they are considering on wether to have Origins and SP like DAO or a set, voiced character like DA2, based on Fan Feedback. I bring in the voice here because it is nigh impossible to have seperate voice actors for different Origins (costs, no point), and the SP is better suited to Origins. I think SP and Origins come hand in hand.

I think we have a reasonable choice of actually persuading Bioware if we fight hard enough. Think, why would they say they are considering this, based on fan feedback, if they have already made up their mind? If they have already made up their mind, then their is no point in telling the public the opposite, since it is only going to give people high hopes that are ultimitely going to be shattered. They would only say this if they are seriously considering changing things.

So I have hope. Lets make some noise!

No it doesn't. It means that they are debating on whether to have a fixed protagonist or is they will have origins. It has nothing to do with voiced or silent protagonists.

Hey man, why such a buzzkill on someone who is excited at the vague possiblity of having silent immersion again. Interesting that it's almost exactly 50/50. Voiced appears more a step sideways than a step forward. Just another flavour.

'Cause devs being misquoted or misunderstood causes a lot of strife here on the BSN. As such, I'd like to nip it in the bud before it gets out of control. All that quote is referring to is fixed protagonist (i.e. Hawke being from Lothering and having an apostate for a father and sister) versus origins (Hawke being a templar or an apostate or noble, etc).

That's a false dichotomy.

Prior to DAO (ignoring the ME games), BioWare never really had a fixed protagonist before.  And yet they also didn't have origins.  They just let you design whomever you wanted.

That's what I'd like to see return.  I'd like to see a return to gmes like NWN and KotOR where the PC could be pretty much whatever we wanted.  We wouldn't be constrained the just a handful of origins, and I certainly don't want a fixed protagonist.

Really? I felt that Revan was fairly fixed.

But regardless, that doesn't change the fact that the quote has nothing to do with the silent/voiced debate.

Not from a roleplaying perspective.  Revan doesn't know he's Revan.  His "knowledge" of why he's on the Endar Spire is yours to invent.

But regardless, that doesn't change the fact that the quote has nothing to do with the silent/voiced debate.

That's true.

I don't expect they'll return to a proper silent protagonist any time soon, but I hold out hope that they'll let us disable the voice.

If a silent protagonist returns, then I don't want any hear other voices in Dragon Age III!

Zero.

Zilch.

Nada.

NO ONE TALKS.

IMHO if my character can't talk then NO other characters should either because it breaks the immersion for me to have a mute staring off into space while someone else is talking.to her/him it  not only looks stupid it sounds stupid as well.

No way man. I want to roleplay my character, not every character in the game.

Edit - Having it your way is easily fixed by turningthe sound off and reading the subtitles anyway.

P.s  Mutes don't shout battle cries in battle, just an fyi

What Bioware have to realise is that a good percentage of the people who voted voiced, would prefer races over it. Therefore a strong majority would prefer silent and a racial option over voiced.
THE DECISION IS SIMPLE NO VOICED MAIN CHARACTERS.
Why do i have to suffer because some people have no imagination............

Voiced, I liked Origins but after awhile a character that just stands there with his or her mouth closed was dumb you saw the back of your characters head more than the front during a conversation any emotional response from your companions was met with an an blank stare. Sorry I want to play my game not talk to my TV in a fake accent.

I can already put your mind at ease on this one.  Because there is pretty much no chance that the next DA game will feature a "Stoic Protagonist" (As Ive stated before, I use this term because some will dispute full on mute due to "battle cries") simply because I cant remember where it was I read it (times like this I wish I kept links like that around and may in the future just for these purposes) but one of the devs pretty much said that they wont be going back to the "non voiced" (or stoic) PC any time soon.

And Im not the first one to point this out in the numerous threads like this one across the forums.  But regardless, I dont think this thread is so much about the folks herein "getting a stoic PC back" in the next game, so much as it's about giving them something to do in between DLCs and future games.

Thing is, when the next DA game gets released, and it features a fully voiced protagonist (and it will),  there will inevitably be two things that happen:

1.) First and foremost, there will be folks who have pre-ordered the game and/or considered getting the game, that will cancel said pre-orders and/or just not get the game altogether in the hopes that they can "speak with their wallets".  Which is well and good I suppose.  However, the only thing that will accomplish is a sort of "personal satisfaction" because there wont be enough folks who DONT buy the game for it to really hurt BW's profits too much.  At best, the sales they lose will be considered an "Acceptable Loss".

2.) In relation to #1 in some way, there will inevitably be a sleugh of threads to spring up all over the forums how these same folks are somehow surprised that they didnt get a "Stoic PC" back when they were told LONG before hand that they werent getting it back.  Dont get me wrong, Im not saying these same people "shouldnt" voice their opinion on the matter.  However, given that they've been told already that they arent getting this particular feature back, they really shouldnt be surprised when in fact, they dont get it.

As I said before, I can honestly understand where the folks are coming from that like the stoic PC.  I dont agree with their opinion, but I understand it.  Because it's for those reasons that they like their particular choice, that I happen to prefer a voiced PC.  Once again, it's all about expectations and criteria from player to player.

Just like I know Im not getting NG+ in the next DA game.  It doesnt mean that if there happens to be a thread on it somewhere, that Im not going to chime in and give my opinion on the matter.  What it does mean is that Im giving my opinion on the matter base and flat with no hopes or delusions that Im going to get this particular feature.  Which Im hoping is the basis for this particular thread.  That it is just folks giving their random opinions, with no "real" hopes or expectations that they are actually going to get this in the next DA game.  And if some of you are actually hoping beyond hope for the stoic PC to make a comeback.  Just please, do me a favor and dont act all surprised when the game releases and it's another fully voiced PC.

I know that last bit comes off as a bit crass I guess but it really cant be helped.  We live in a free world, I cant tell you what to think and such but Im asking; Please, dont get your hopes up.  It will make the disappointment a little easier to take in the end.

It has nothing to do with voiced or silent. Origins does not mean silent protagonist. Personally, I just think they should vary between games. Origins one game, set the next, origins, origins, set, etc.

The Dragon Age series is about Thedas, and there are bound to be important people who come from one specific race and others whose race we can pick.

I just hope Bioware learns how to make a better set protagonist, because Hawke failed horribly for what I wanted to do in DAII.

Yes, because people who prefer a voiced protagonist have no imagination. That isn't false at all. Nor is it condescending.

Why won't bioware just give us gameplay option that turns off protagonist speach sound and animations plus displays text instead. People who prefer voiced protagonist could keep this option off and have the experience they want.

This would solve the problem in a way that would not really add any real expense to development.

^If I had to guess, this is essentially what the choices will come down to.  It'll come down to deciding on a feature like this, or another fully voiced PC.  I honestly dont see this playing out any other way.  This way, everyone wins. (so to speak....Or not lol.  Sorry, pun not intentional)

Hello There wrote...

The fanbase is pretty divided and i want to know the actual amount of people on the forums that prefer voiced or silent protagonists.

A common misconception is that voiced PC is a revolution over Silent PC, but this is blatently untrue. The truth is that they are just two different styles of play and neither are a revolution, since they both have pros and cons, strenths and weaknesses.

Silent - The pros of a silent PC is that it really puts you, the player, into the world of the game because it feels like you are being the PC. It really immerses you into the world. You are acting in the world, either acting how you would in real life, or you can roleplay a character you have made up in your head. Silent offers much roleplaying ability beyond the scope of a voice.

Also, people debate this, but Silent also offers much more options, as well as better diversified tone of options. In DA2 it is good, funny, bad, but in Origins, there may be four tones (snide, sarcastic, empathetic, accepting) in this part of the convo, and then 3 different tones in the next part of the convo ( angry, questioning, happy). And finally, it is far less costly to have a silent PC than a voiced.
The cons of this though is that the story has to less cinematic in regards to the PC, and it can't have a central character, because the PC is more like a blank slate than a character.

TL;DR - More personal and immersed connection, better roleplaying, more options, less resources. No central character, less cinematic.

Voiced - The pros of a voiced PC is that it allows the game to be much more cinematic, with the freedom of allowing the PC to have more situations eg. giving a speech. Also, the Voiced PC is easier to jump into and doesn't require so much effort, especially with the dialogue wheel. It also allows the PC to be an actual character in the game, with a name and everything.

However, Bioware only gives a halfway for this. Shepherd and Hawke constantly drift between being a fully developed character (ala Geralt), and being a completely blank slate (ala The Warden). The cannot be their own character because they are also the players character, which always leads to their responses being the same tone an emotionless, because they don't have their own personality, because they are not their own full character. This is a mistake on Bioware though, and not Voiced PC's, but i doubt Bioware will change this because it requires a fully defined character like Geralt from the Witcher. Also, there is the trope of tones being good/funny/bad.

TL;DR - More cinematic, easier to jump into, actual character. Disconnect because not full character (Geralt) and not Blank Slate (The Warden), tones consist of Good/Funny/Bad.

My opinion is that i would much rather a silent protagonist because i prefer that type of play, and if only because VP is now becoming prominent with DAO possibly being the last Silent PC game outside of Bethesda. I want to have my Silent PC games. We don't need bothe of Biowares' series to be voiced; lets keep them distinct.

TL;DR - Differences between voiced and silent. Just say which one you prefer, and give your opinion.

Just give your opinions and vote in the POLL.

Voiced is more immersive unless the character is a telepath who communicates in text.  In which case, I'd like The Devs to make it explcitly clear that the character is indeed a texting telepath so that I don't spend the entire time playing the game wondering why my character has no voice yet manages to talk to everyone.

I am no more the PC when gaming than I was G.I. Joe as a child.  I'm just trying to have fun controlling a doll within limits.  I prefer that doll provide a full presentation than for it to be inexplicably mute yet not mute.  The game world lacks detail when the character has an inexplicable means of communication.

For me it's one or the other.

I can accept a silent PC if the rest of the game is silent, but it's nowhere as immersive for me anymore I just got through playing DA:O and it was nowhere as fun or  immersive to me before I played DA2. Now I can play silent RPGs like Final Fanasty VII because all the characters are silent and the game is text based.

But simple truth is that I find games like Mass Effect, Mass Effect 2, and Dragon Age II far more immersive and enjoyable to a the PC having a voice than those without games like Dragon Age:Origins, Oblivion, Jade Empire, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Fallout 3, and etc.

Now I MIGHT be able to accept a mute character in a game where everyone else talks, if there is a really great reason as too why the character is mute and there is a believable and fun way that the character can communicate with other characters.
