I like voiced protagonists just fine, but I voted for silent because I want to have all the options that Origins had in both character type and conversation, and I really don't see that happening with a voiced protagonist.

In my opinion. voiced is better as it adds a sense of realism to the game, my Hawke would never have been as funny as she is if she was a silent protagonist.
In my opinion, Hawke was never funny, and DAO gave me lots of laughs with its jokes.

If i want to pretend that i am in a fantasy world , ill play a video game.
DAO i felt that i created my character . I played several times .
How many times did you replay DA2.. seriously ... be honest . .. how many times do you finish watching
a movie , then pop it back in and watch it again , and again .
DA2 is the same . The mechanics of the game are so transparent with the voice wheel. And talking Hawke.
I never even finished the game ... and have 0 desire to do so ...
Voiced = No replay value.... for me anyway ...
No Voice for the main character.

More than DAO.

Great movies I can.
The fact that Hawke is less me than the Warden is does not discount me making a Hawke that is more distinct than the warden. This gets back to the whole argument about first versus thrid person role playing. You are still customising a character and bringing them to life in third role playing.PurpleJesus wrote...

And people refer to the Warden as what?.. The Warden.
Any way when we talk about Origens what come to the table is Morrigan/Alistair/Sten/Leliana( the talking characters).. the last is the warden why is that? Is mute, shows no feeling and many of the pic are about having a "good time by the camp fire"..
The warden isn't yours either.. In fact every single "game character" out there is owned by the writers and the company they work for.. oh did I just added water in you're soup? sorry!.. Not.
I for once like the voiced character and I think My Ladyhawke show her feeling better than The warden ever did..:innocent:

If it isn't silent, RPing is virtually destroyed for me and to some extent, it's destroyed as a whole.
A good example would be the Smuggler in TOR. Who said I wanted to be snarky? Apparently the voice actor got to choose that for me. Why is my character saying sorry ironically? I wanted my response to be genuine. It's little things like that that destroy the experience for me partially. Playing a set character is all good in the hood if it's a game like Uncharted or Halo, but in an RPG, I want my characters to be MINE and not simply get the choice to do things by the book, be a jerk or some mix of the two.

That's your imagination's fault, not the Warden's. If in a show like 24 you got to choose if Jack threatened the terrorist or offered a peace deal would you consider Jack Bauer to be yours? I definitely wouldn't.

Well, BioWare said back in the day that making the Warden speak would put a big strain in resources. And Dragon Age II cut both the Origin stories and races. So I'd say that yes, silent does mean more customization.

Aside from the actual origin stories themselves, I found very little difference between playing an a Human Noble, City Elf, Mage or even Dwarf. The majority of the story -- and NPCs -- treat you as a Grey Warden first and foremost.Meris wrote...

Any consideration to the character's race and background was often secondary. I was disappointed that relatively few people reacted with fear and suspicion when I played a Mage. When I compared my game to my wife's (who played a female Human Noble), the differences were minor except at some key points, which were few and far between.
Don't get me wrong, the origin stories themselves were great. I particularly liked the City Elf origin (which was even more interesting if you played a female character). But I don't feel we're losing much by having one central character. The opportunity to have a much more indepth and detailed character, using one race, is there if the writers take advantage of it.

I'm not saying that the game literally branches out from the Origin stories, but rather that they won't hire multiple voice actors for every race. While they could certainly use one for everyone, it would be a shoddy implementation.
And from a roleplaying standpoint, I would say that the Origin stories did a superb job at providing different points of view for the game's story - at least wherever we got a actual choice.

isn't that what they did with SWTOR?
i don't see why they couldn't do that, provided they didn't mess the writing up.

That's why I like Hawke more. Atleast (s)he can engage in party banter now, which makes it feel that (s)he is actually part of a group. The fact that both VA's actually sound convincing in pretty much all the dialogue makes it all the better.

The lack of animations might have had have something to do with that, too. The Warden just sort of stares lifelessly, like Unknown_Warrior mentions, while Hawke and Shepard can banter awesomely with the crew.

Lol for a moment it appears you are defending the warden for fear of him/her getting his/her/it feelings hurt.. lol! I know it can't be. I have a good imagination and thats why it conflicts with your's, I know where real life start or when talking about a fantasy game ends.
right .....no idea who whathisfaceis or why you jumped to a terrorist comment but whatever float your boat, my thoughts? blow up the terrorists country don't wait a year sitting and wishing they go away or send medicine and food to them.

That said, I do not think that fully voiced is a bad thing, nor should it totally take away the RPG of a game. I do think it would take more work though.
*If* the voice had a tonal slider that allowed for deeper/higher so that the player can customize it a bit - you would have a nice range of voices from one actor. This would go a long way for me as I often think the voice is too high. Plus if I could have altered Hawkes voice I might not have been reminded of Vaughan.
Also you could have the character background to be such that the racial accent is gone and thus allow the player to be able to choose race while still having a voiced protagonist. Yes, there would be more lines to write and record, but not twice or more of what is in the game, only in key places. This method would go a long way for putting the game closer to a full RPG like Origins.
Including more dialog choices and inclusion of Investigate, etc. would make a good compromise from people who hate the dialog wheel. Yes again this would require more voice work, but the player would feel more in control of the conversation. Also adding skills/stats/lore paths in conversations is a nice way to put some RPG elements back into the voiced protagonist.
Having some way to more closely know what is going to be said as well as alternate versions. The problem with Snarky/****/Jerk is you do not know what the hell they are going to say. It would be nice if you could have an option to hover over and see at least a bit of what is said. Also adding a more neutral option (again more voice work) would also be nice as sometimes I would like to tell someone 'No' without shooting them in the knees and killing the family (yes exaggeration there).
Murder knife should be an option in all conversations. Just a personal opinion, but think of all the pain and suffering I could have saved Kirkwall if I was allowed to kill Patrice in act 1, Elthena for doing nothing, Samson because, while Feynriel was not harmed the female mage was, and I did want to strangle him with his own intestines, Merideth for being a total loon, Cullen because I never liked him, random begger because he was there, etc. Why the game would have happily ended with me champion of kirkwall and feeling pretty good about things.
