You could still pretend an exchange involved a misunderstanding. You could intend a line differently from how the writers intended it regardless of how it is voiced. In Exile wrote...
Let me put it this way: if you add in every single feature inherent in VO except for timbre and pitch, you have something antithetical to what silent protagonist fans what: any kind of chance to 'make up' the delivery of a line, any kind of chance to say the intention behind the line is anything other than what's provided, and any kind of chance to pretend as if the exchange may have involved a misunderstanding.
The voice limits the ways you can intend the line, but it doesn't reduce that list to one.
Also, you're wrong about the players wanting to have the line to feature some intent "other than what's provided". With a Silent protagonist, the intent ISN'T provided at all. you're not contradicting the game by making up a different intent, because there is no extant intent there for your intent to be different from.
Your belief that the author's intent persists within the game after the game has been written is entirely foundationless. It's the language that speaks, not the author. And the language, once written, exists independently.
You're committing the Intentional Fallacy.

I would very much prefer DA2 if I could turn Hawke's voice off and never know how the spoken line differs from the paraphrase.

Voiced. I'm sorry, but Origins did not have a completely silent protagonist. For those who want to refute this, go to a battle scene or interact with a lock. I felt like more of a husk in Origins with little character attachment other than feeling like a complete stud in battle scenes. In DA2, whether you loved or hated Hawke, he felt more tangible to me. When the human noble father died in the beginning and when he made an appearance in the Urn of Sacred Ashes Temple the moments were rich and rewarding, but these memorable moments were brought down because of that dead stare by your character. The same applies for when you say your goodbye to Morrigan; a moment that was meant to tug on the heart strings but brought down by that eerie silence. With Hawke you could see the pain work through his/her face and you could hear it in the diplomatic voice along with the snarkiness brought by the witty Hawke. Overall, it just felt more personal. So I say stick with Hawke's style of voice.
Which is why I don't really feel all that attached to my wardens or feel the need to play them again in DA 3. I don't really have a warden I can identify with. It is more like I makeup a generic human, dwarf, and elf and go slay some darkspawn. The world of DAO is what actualy carried the game not so much my warden.

Good Work Guys! We're still winning, i can't believe it.
Remember, if we make a big enough noise, Bioware might hear us.
You know what, I hope they DO listen to you guys (which Im sure they wont but on the off chance they do...). Because that way, it gives me a reason to not even "rent" DA3 and save money for a better title coming out that particular year. Because in the off chance that they DID go back to a silent protag for DA3 (which again, they wont but hey it's your time, feel free to waste it if you wish) I wouldnt even bother playing it at all.

You know what ? You keep saying "they wont" "you're not getting silent back" etc etc...
But actually, do you have some link where did they say "No chance - silent protagonist is not going back" ?

Actually, I used to. Because it was an interview of some sort where it was either Laidlaw or someone that actually said that. Im sure someone else can provide the link because I know Im not the only one who read it because said link was also in one of the MANY other duplicate threads like this one not too long ago. So, if you need it that badly, Im sure you can scour through the older threads on this very subject and dig it up yourself.
But again, Im not saying you guys have to stop "hoping" to get it back. Im merely saying dont be surprised when you dont get it back in the next DA game. That'd be alot like me still asking for NG+ in DA3....I can ask for it all I want, and get others to rally behind me in the cause. But the point is, it's not going to happen so why should I waste my time "polling" for something Im not going to get anyway?

Cause Bioware actually might get some decent info from a straight-forward poll - if not for the development of DA, then for other future projects.
Though that in the end comes down to hope as well - like most action that aims to influence something.
edit: and this discussion is drifting away from being straight-forward...

You lost me at the bolded part there. I dont put alot of bank in "hope". Im the kind of person that if I do decide to hope about something, I dont get my hopes up too high about it. That way, when/if I dont get want I was "hoping" for, there is a very minimal amount, if any at all, of disappointment involved.

I just think that they should be able to use both in their games not have to worry about making casual gamers being brushed away. The Fallout games still use non-voiced protagonists (although then again they have other features and lack of Rpg depth that makes up to the casual gamers, but still you get my point.)
I'll go with voiced protagonist though I suppose.

Edit to add: though voice sets like we had in DAO and other games are actually a good thing.

One thing I think this poll illustrates perfectly is what Bioware ultimately accomplished with DA2 ... splitting their fanbase right down the middle.
Whether this is a good thing or not remains to be seen. I suspect the answer will lie in the reaction to/success of DA3
Good Poll:)

Only when it comes to Voiced vs Silent.
In DA2 vs DAO the split is ... well - much wider

Lies.
Didn't you hear? According to Bioware, DA2 was a roaring success that pleased old fans and attracted tons of new fans! :innocent:
Also I prefer silent because in a role-playing game I want to be the character. I don't need a voiced avatar to voice what I think or want to say. Give me more options and the opportunity to "fill-in-the-blanks" of my character rather than fewer options and having Bioware tell me what type of person I'm role-playing and giving a few feeble options to chose my character's tone anyday.

That being said, this poll changes nothing. At most it showed that BW "jumped the gun" with the voiced PC for the DA series a bit premature. But now that they did there's no going back. I believe they even stated as much. Pity.
