Do I not get any starting experience for Awakenings and the other quests so I'm effectively starting off at zero? (I bought the ultimate ed)

You mean if you import that character into Awakening? The game effectively ignores the character death (as if you had done Morrigan's ritual).

You can also start a new Orlesian warden, but your DAO choices do not transfer over.

Ok cool thanks for the info. I didn't know the game could ignore it like that.

There was a dev post a while ago. People were complaining about the game retconning the death. Essentially the devs stated that if you (the player) choose to ignore the consistency flaw, go ahead.

The amusing thing is that if Bioware didn't allow people to import their US Wardens, people would complain about *that* instead. :P

People want to do the Ultimate Sacrifice then Import their Dead Warden game retaining their deicisions but start as a new Orlesian Warden. Basicaly, but of course that ruins the continuity of the over-arching story and plot of the Dragon Age universe.

To maintain the US, you need to import into DA2 from Origins and never play Awakening, Golems, or Witch Hunt.

I still do not understand the appeal of martyring yourself for no good reason and crippleing your story and the events of dragon age. Particularly when your given so many ways out and reminded that that you should do something to stop all Blights not just this one. I always see it as a failure of your Warden to do his duty and fulfill their vow, and a betrayal of everything the Wardens stand for.
