It's action/adventure, as far as mainstream media and the devs are concerned.  But if Deus Ex and Mass Effect (2) can be considered RPGs, go for it.

Hard to put these in a deliberate order. I'm sure it'll change as my mood changes, by the day if not the hour.

Some older games slide down due to the limitations of their era, but also slip back up due to the freedom and features that modern games seem to lack that I loved and miss.

1. Icewind Dale
2. Freedom Force
3. Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines
4. Wasteland

5. Pools of Darkness (representing whole Gold Box series)

6. Dragon Age: Origins
7. Bard's Tale (representing whole original series of Bard's Tale games)
8. Fallout 2

9. Alpha Protocol
10. Fallout: New Vegas

The two group (1-4 and 6-8) I fiddled with their orders a half-dozen times before giving up and ordering them in number of times played through as the final decider for each set.

I have a feeling that on another play of Alpha Protocol (gone through twice) and another couple plays of NV (only played once) those games might either move up a bit or, in the case of NV (and the crappy Bethesda engine holding the game back) it might slip back off the list (in which case KotOR would fall in at 10.)

But you level up an roleplay as a character and make decisions in both Deus Ex and Mass Effect. Zelda you don't you play as Link through a linear story and dungeons but you never make your own decisions or level up.

It's a action/adventure.

1: Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn + Throne of Bhaal
2: Baldur's Gate + Tales of the Sword Coast
3: Icewind Dale + Heart of Winter, Trials of the Luremaster
4: Icewind Dale II
5: The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind + Tribunal, Bloodmoon
6: Dragon Age: Origins + Awakening
7: Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura
8: Neverwinter Nights + Hordes of the Underdark
9: Neverwinter Nights 2 + Mask of the Betrayer
10: Planescape: Torment

These are specifically ranked as 'best roleplaying games'; the ranking might change somewhat just as 'best games' (Planescape: Torment would be a good deal higher on that ranking, for one).

1. Fallout: 2
2. Fallout: New Vegas
3. Planescape: Torment
4. Fallout: 1
5. Alpha Protocol
6. Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines

These are the games that are my favorites. Pretty funny how much I love Black Isle Studios since at lot of these games are tied with them. I just need to find the time to play Arcanum, the Temple of Elemental Evil, and the Ice Wind Dale series.

OK, I am game as well:

1. Planescape: Torment
2. BG1
3. BG2 with SoA & ToB
4. DA:O
5. KoTOR
6. Fallout 1 & 2 (tie)
7. NWN with SoU & HotU
8. Morrowind
9. Fallout 3
10. ES Daggerfall

Subject to change once I finish V:tMB

Edit, Mass Effect 1, Icewind Dale are there as well, but I just couldn't add them in. IMO, Mass Effect is the gratest story in any game I have ever played, it's the epic-ness of it that blew me away.

Played lots of pen-and-paper games but I don't think I've even played 10 different videogame RPGs

1. TES IV: Oblivion
2. TES III: Morrowind (just started this one, but already I'm really enjoying it)
3. Fallout: New Vegas
4. Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines (also just started this one)
5. Zork 1 & 2 (it's been decades since I played them, so I can't distinguish between the two anymore, but I do recall having a lot of fun)
6. Dragon Age: Origins
7. Fallout 3
8. Bioshock 2
9. Amnesia: the Dark Descent (more of a puzzle game, but it was really fun and sort of an RPG)
10. ME2 (not exactly a "full RPG," but it was fun)

I would add that Arcania Gothic 4 was the worst game I've ever played that claimed to be an RPG. I also hated Borderlands but I don't think that was marketed as an RPG.

Haha. Arcania. Yeah, that game was err... umm.. yeah.

It wasn't made by the original developers of the series, they got into a fight with the publisher and lost the license temporarily. So, Arcania was developed by a benchwarmer and Piranha Bytes went on to make Risen.

If you want to try the best of the Gothic series naughty, I'd recommend picking up Gothic 2 + the Night of the Raven expansion. Or Risen, they actually share a lot of elements. Risen is basically Gothic 4 with a different name... if it weren't for Arcania.

I suppose the silver lining of that dark cloud purchase was that along with Arcania, I got a Steam package including Gothic 1, Gothic 2 Gold Edition and Gothic 3. I haven't installed them yet, but they are in my library ready for download.

If you get some free time, try them out. Esp. Gothic 2 Gold, fun game. It's a gameplay game, not a story game. So it should fit in pretty well with you since you're an Elder Scrolls fan, it's open world too.

No argument on Ultima IV, it was awesome and the series through VI were all great, I never went any farther though. Unfortunately, better graphics with incredible RPG elements in the more modern games are better now. Over the past few years though, they are regressing.

KOTOR, then Mass Effect series, TES series and after that it's difficult.
