This thread was inspired by the Food Network show "The Best Thing I Ever Ate." Now, before we trot merrily down the road of innuendo, I'd like to focus on food here - meal food, can be ordered in a restaurant off-the-menu food. (Not that I trying to be prudish - I am merely attempting to keep a focused subject. Perhaps it's a futile effort.)
So what was the best foodstuff/food item/menu item you have ever had? What is the food item that sings to your soul, that makes you return to that restaurant/bakery/food truck/food stall time and time again? What was that one thing that you had once and wish beyond all wishes to have once again?

To start, I have three (selfish, I know):

The French-dipped lamb sandwich from Philippe's - The Original in Los Angeles, California. Just a lovely package of fresh bread, melt-in-your-mouth meat, and hot spicy horse-radishy mustard. It's just divine.

The ahi-poki at King's Hawaiian in Torrance, California. A simple meal of fresh tuna, onions, spices, but it pops - it's light and smooth and decadent.

The Ferrero Rocher cake at Melee Ouvert in Montreal, Cananda. I don't even know if that bar still exists - it may have been like Brigadoon (they don't seem to have a website), but oh holy s**t, that cake...that cake was akin to nibbling on god.

So...what was your best?

Wait! Just one moment here!

whykikyouwhy: 2 of your 3 Best are Southern California Eateries and yet you leave out Pink's? I had friends that were hardcore Vegetarians that fell off the wagon to have a Pink's Chili-Dog!

The single best thing I've ever had was my grandmother's roast beef that she would make every Christmas. She'd serve it with Yorkshire pudding, green beans almondine and trifle for dessert. I've had substantially the same meal every year of my life, but the ones my grandmother made were the best.

As for restaurant fare, we had a simple jambalaya at a small hole in the wall just outside the French Quarter in New Orleans. The place is gone, but the food was fresh and honest.

Two years ago I had a perfect scallop at the Woodfire Grill here in Atlanta. The flavour of the food just exploded in your mouth with every bite.

Deathwurm, I must confess that I have never been to Pink's. It's a sin, I know. It is however on my list of places to eat the next time I am in town - but my vacations to CA have become less vacation-y and more about stuffing my face full of delicacies. It requires intense math to try and balance out the places I want to go, the food I want to eat, and the reasonable number of meals I should have per day.  Image IPB

There is a specific Christmas my mother orders every year that I absolutely adore. I have eaten it every year since my preteens or so. It may not be the best tasting food. I have a fondest for finer chocolates and adore croissants as my friends here are aware. But there is something about that stollen that in one bite makes me feel at peace. It feels like... home.

It's obscene how much I want that Bailey's Cheesecake! So far as meat dishes go I must agree with slimgrin anything Italian I can't get enough of.

Darn! ;)

Kidding...

The best food I've ever had is probably the grilled chicken caesar salad from Jax Grill here in Houston.  The chicken has this nice charred taste to it and it's juicy.  The fattening dressing is yummy too along with the huge homemade croutons.

I have a huge craving for some chocolate cheesecake now thanks to this thread.  I think I will have some for my bday next month. : 3

Best Sushi:  The omokase (chef's choice) at Matsuhisa in Beverly Hills,  California.  Amazing assortment of fish, scallops, oysters, eel...

Best Pizza:  Zachary's,  Berkeley, California.   (two words: stuffed crust)

Best Pho:  Pho 79,  Westminster, California.  Fresh, cheap, filling, and tasty.

Best Thai:  a home cooked meal years ago, at my aunt's mother's island home in Southern Thailand, including home-raised lobsters and fresh-caught-everything-else.   (or: almost anything on Hollywood Blvd, California. )

but really, Thai food in Thailand >> all.

@OP :   love King's Hawaiian desserts.  mmmmm.

There's very little on the King's Hawaiian menu or in their bakery that isn't simply fantastic, imo.
It's literally the first stop I make after landing at LAX and securing a rental car - I might be all out of sorts from being crammed on a plane for hours, but there I am in one of those booths, just about unhinging my jaw so that I can load up on their cuisine.

Wow some Rich folks around here *starts to write down names of who to rob when I become a bandit or highwayman.*

Well given the lowly and more importantly cheap person I am, none of that crap, serve me a small dish and charge me alot, don't be surprised to wake up on fire in the morning. But yes...

I'ld have to say Buffalo Burgers, Deer Meat Hash (which is pretty damn good) Striped Sea Bass, a Dear Meat roast recipie I have and my own sauce I made for it, and my own special cat fish nuggets, and lastly fried Rattlesnake and Aligator tail stakes.

I'm more of the cheap sort, and the best meat is what I've personally killed or caught, you sorry city slickers :P.

Also I love the Chinese dumplings my wife makes, and those little dough balls with Sugar, don't remember the name, Carolina rolls are also pretty good.

Wow... tough question...

There was this one time when I was in Colorado. We had been skiing since 9am without snacks and it was now 2pm. We finally decided to go to the chalet and quickly went to grill. That's where I had the best-tasting fajita of my life... :D

Hmm in that case the cheeseburger I had and the Bottle of Water I had after having went four days with no food, water or sleep.

Not trying to one up yah, wasn't by choice in my case.

We Romanians have a specialty called ''Mici''
They are similar to meatballs in a way, composed of beef (sometimes with a mixture of pork or lamb) prepared via barbeque with garlic and pepper. Tastes great with mustard.

The best food item I ever ate has to be the steak that I had when i went to the stockyards in Fort Worth, Texas last year. Medium-rare and i didn't need any sauce, very juicy too!
