The wardens don't seem to have any skill that is in demand for centuries at the time, and then they don't really barter for a payraise before acting. Do they do any other jobs or is the funds needed to keep their organization afloat gifted to them from the various nations of Thedas?

I would suspect that various kingdoms and single patrons provide funds for the Wardens to be kept in an armed and ready state - people sympathetic to and supportive of the role the Order plays. Places like Weisshaupt Fortress and Vigil's Keep also serve as a sort of quid-pro-quo relationship with the surrounding towns - the Order serves as a guardian force in non-Blight times, so they provide that service to the town/locale, and take on a governmental role (thus allowing for some funds to cycle into the Order).

I imagine they receive money from nobility. Warden Commander Dryden received money from the nobility before Arland ordered that they receive no more, and the Warden Commander of Amaranthine can receive money to help rebuild the city of Amaranthine and Vigil's Keep.

Also, loot dead bodies. Seems to work for my Wardens.

My wardens have never received a salary or other emolument from any governments yet they always seem to wind up with 100+ gold sovereigns after they slay Archy. The Deep Roads seem to hold a great deal of treasure. Perhaps that's a secondary reason why you find wardens in the Deep Roads?

Well, your warden also did a lot of stuff that I'd imagine wardens usually don't. Like fetch quests.

Going into the deep roads and salvaging seems like a good way to make money, that is true. Might be a part of it.

I imagine that the Wardens in each country are supported by the rulers of that country; you wouldn't want a blight to happen on your watch whilst all of the Wardens have disappeared and become poor beggars because you didn't pay them enough now would you?

Before Commander Drydan, the Wardens were thought a relic of an age long past and a drain on the nations coffers.

that's what it says in the codex entry. They are supported by their individual countries.

Then there's Weisshaupt fortress. They are heavily involved in politics in the Anderfels.

I bet the Wardens get their hands on tons of resources and money given their connections in the Anderfels.

If the nations do pay the wardens, how much do they pay? Is it every nation bartering for their own price or just paying for the wardens stationed inside the nation or depending on how many wardens they have?

Anderfels are strong supporters for the wardens. They look to the first warden more than their own king.

The Wardens rule the Anderfels and thus have the support of an entire nation.

I doubt there any negotiations, prices or anything, their not paying them. Basically it would probably work sort of like they give them tithes, money, food, equipment etc. Wardens probably see regular deliveries of these things. The Wardens probably take care of the rest, like making their own armor and such.

Alistair hired Wade and Herren to help the Warden Commander in Amaranthine. The local nobles payed stipends, which the Warden never saw go into his/her pocket. That stipend was used to pay all the soldiers, pay for the construction projects (Warden pays extra from their own pocket to get the really good stuff, not just the generic already payed for stuff). I assume it's somewhat similar in other nations.

The real world Templars didn't have any actual jobs outside of Crusades either, really. Yet they always recieved a lot a money from members joinning (New Templars being required to give all belongings to the Order, for example), and from tithes from the lands they owned. It is probably a similar way the Wardens earn their money.

Considering that the first warden is so keen to have you not screw it up I'd suppose it is rare. You're not only a warden, you're also their liege lord, which goes against warden custom (political neutrality).

Wardens are neutral (supposedly). Awakening set a precedent of having Nobles swearing fealty to a Warden, rather than defer to to them in politics (Weishaupt Fortress and the Anderfells)

It's mentioned specifically in Awakening that the nobility is expected to pay a tithe to the Grey Wardens. I suspect that's also the case in other nations.
