For Beholders, the Shield of Balduran solves all of your problems in a very entertaining way.

Sure, but it is pretty cheesy.
Don't know what Bioware thought of when they decided to put this item along the Cloak of Mirroring into the game.

You can get a nasty shock if you're using the shield with SCS2 installed of course!

I am guessing that playtests resulted in too many smashed keyboards from yet another party wipe from some goddamned beholder death ray
Really; people posting in this forum nowadays probably know dozens of ways to deal with beholders, but for most people they're brutal.

Beholders, Mindflayers, Dragons, the Liches.
They all wiped my party numerous times in my first playthrough.
Not to forget Kangaxx who I couldn't defeat at all
.
But that made my rethink my strategies and this was pretty fun, given the variety in the game mechanics.
I miss such games nowadays...
By the way to get at least a tiny bit on topic again, my very first character was a Cavalier ^^.
Had 16 in Con, because I thought only true Fighters would profit from 18, and a high Wisdom, because i thought, he'd get bonus spells out of it. In the end I didn't use his spellcasting at all which I found to be lacking but he rocked nevertheless
