Whenever I run the game, the display adapter the game selects in the configuration says "Intel® HD Graphics Family". My laptop has a NVIDIA Geforce GT 525M video card, but not matter what settings I mess with in the NVIDIA Control Panel, the game still won't switch to this graphics card.
Does anyone know a fix to this problem?
Game is reading Intel HD Graphics rather than NVIDIA 525m

It's very common with all of the "switching" Geforces, but in your case, the difference isn't that major. The GT 525 is weak sauce compared to the game's minimum, while the very latest Intel chipset video chip type graphics has actually come a very long way, for Intel, at least.
The current GTX400 generation of Geforces has very puny business graphics cards carrying a "GT" prefix, and the GTS / GTX prefixes are now what to look for to play games, not just to have bragging rights for the most expensive graphics cards. The GTS 450 and the GTX 550 are in the middle of the (desktop) range of Mainline gaming cards, while the GT 540 sits on the fence in between Low End business video, and Gaming.
Laptops are not officially supported by Bioware / EA. One reason, although not the primary one, is that laptop manufacturers all dilute the recommended specifications, which normally are set at about 10-15% lower levels than the matching desktop GPUs. If a desktop GT 540 works as a budget level game card, it's not likely to do nearly as well when it's in a mobile system (oops, sorry about that, I'd typed "440" when I meant to name the 540 again, and had to edit this later to fix that).
P. S. Although I personally have not gotten word back yet, in the nearly two years since DAO's release, there's been plenty of time for gamers who wnjoy writing Mods to have created performance modification mods to simplify the game's graphics and reduce the load on low end hardware.. The results aren't going to be what the developers intended, but instead of herky-jerky visuals, smoothness may be possible with otherwise unusable video components. (And if anyone has done this, and it does work, then let's have some feedback.

It works when I hook it up to my TV. The intel hd graphics defaults to lowest settings, and it blows

Be wary of overheating at higher settings. You are asking an awful lot more of your hardware than it was designed to do and you don't want to cook your system.

You can tell I was hurrying when adding my P.S. and spelled "enjoy" as "wnjoy" without paying any attention. I'll fix that, eventually here, meanwhile when the idea of asking around in the Toolset forums about performance Mods for these Low End parts comes up, it would be interesting to get some feedback if such Mods exist and are useful.

I've seen mods to increase the graphical detail, but none to decrease it. I did a quick scan through DA nexus to see if i could find one, but didnt see anything. It will run on some pretty minimal hardware, so I'm not sure how much demand there would be. Since the toolset actually has higher system requirements than the game, I'm not sure those with the toolset would think to do so. A request could certainly be made in the toolset forum. Someone might pick the challenge up.

I'm running on a Dell 15z. The game runs amazingly smooth, but it's just the graphics when not plugged into the TV that's the problem.
Intel i5-2410M CPU @ 2.30 GHz
6.00 GB RAM
NVIDIA GeForce GT 525M @ 1GB
It might not be the best gaming laptop or best for gaming, but my system can run other newer games as High settings just fine, and other users do as well.
If anything, it's an NVIDIA problem but I was wondering if anyone knew a work-around.

I've got the same problem on a Dell 15z
Intel i7 @ 2.8o Ghz
8 GB RAM
Nvidia GeForce GT 525M @ 2 GB
and I'm a little embittered, because on my desktop PC with an old pentium dual core with 2 GB RAM and a ATI Radeon x1950 512 MB DA:O runs perfectly at highest settings!
So, isn't there a solution to this problem?

I answered this already. It is an nVIDIA failure. Can't be fixed without their help, and they don't care.

I didn't understood immediately that this was the answer: maybe 'cause my english its a bit rusty =P
However I tried to do something to solve the problem and maybe I did a step ahead:
From the Nvidia site I downloaded and installed the latest driver for my GPU and also the software for the Physix Nvidia engine: now, forcing the use of the Nvidia GeForce 525m from the Nvidia control panel for the graphic applications, DA:O runs perfectly at highest settings even if the config program of DA:O views only the integrated Intel GPU.
Hope that Sweatervest Carl's problem will be solved this way too!

Other members have claimed to have had no success following the steps you took, which I or other regulars on the forum suggested. Your success makes me feel better toward the nVIDIA Optimus hardware, although I am still going to have a very cautious attitude.
