When I install the toolset the msql says it can't connect to the database. I am trying to install the database manually following the instructions at http://social.biowar...se_installation, but the pictures the wiki has are different from how my studio express looks so I am really confused. A conect to server box pops up and I don't know what to do from there.

I suspect you've downloaded and installed SQL Server 2008 R2 as that is where most of the links are now pointing (thanks Mircosoft!). While I'm sure it's possible to make the Dragon Age Toolset work with 2008R2 I suspect you'll find thinks a lot easier if you uninstall it and download/install SQL Server 2005 SP4.

EDIT: updated link to point to the SP4 version.

Silly questions perhaps but have you run windows update to update it to SP3 (though it will probably go to SP4 as that appears to be the latest version)?

yeah I did. I noticed the DAODB folder is empty. I also found this
http://jerbecca.word...l-express-2008/
for installing it with the 2008 version but it might as well be written in gibberish.

I would think installing another SQL is rather counterproductive in way of all the known workarounds that exist. The Toolset included SQL is confirmed to work.

I suggest following the batch file method (yea thats my own sorry) from the wiki. But only because i didnt deal with installing Management Studio and dont know what it looks like.

Did you follow the graph from this page http://social.biowar...to_the_database yet?

The one that came with the toolset gave me the error that it can't connect to the database and to install it manually. I don't think I have the database and that's the problem.

So what? I dont even know if you followed the guide or not. I assume it is the common manual installation you got to do, and that for sure wasnt the error message.

no sorry, the error mesage says
The SQL Server service failed to start. For more information, see the SQL Server Books Online topics, "How to: View SQL Server 2005 Setup Log Files" and "Starting SQL Server Manually."

Oops dude didnt it say "it can't connect to the database" in your first post? If the new error is due your method of fixing the issue, i suggest you revert and start over. And I dont know what the heck you did in your second post.

Okay I've uninstall everything. Installing the toolset gives me the service failed to start error while it is installing the SQL Server Database Services.

no, no error number. I did find a solution on the wiki about, unfortunately there isn't a documents and settings folder on win 7 so I am not sure where to find the folder I need.

During the SQL Server Express installation when the installation script attempts to start the database, a message box with the "The SQL Server service failed to start..." error message and options to Retry or Cancel may pop up.

* Don't hit cancel. Cancel rolls back the installation, preventing the creation of the BWDATOOLSET database. You'll need to reinstall from scratch if this happens.
* Instead, navigate to C:\\Documents and Settings\\NetworkService\\Application Data\\Microsoft\\ and right click on the Protect folder and open the Properties window. On the Security tab add NETWORK SERVICE to the list of Groups and User names and grant it Full Permissions.
* If you don't have a Security tab then close the Properties window and select Tools | Folder Options from Explorer's menu bar. In the Folder Options window click on the View tab, scroll to the last option and uncheck Use simple file sharing (Recommended) option. Now you should be able to do complete the previous step.
* Finally return to the "The SQL Server service failed to start..." error message and click on the Retry option.

Yea i cant find the path either, i got Win7. Just to be sure, you are logged as administrator?

There are probably numerous other solutions on the net as you search for it. And if you have a techy side you can try command line actions and/or log file examining. Because that is unfortunately the nearest way to make SQL post reasons.

I see some log files at program(x86)/MicrosoftQLServer/90/SetupBootstrap/LOG but that just a hint, i dont know a solution.

you tried to right click the setup.exe (or how the sql-server setup is called) and start as admin?

I believe the droid you seek is C:\\Users\\<username>\\AppData\\Roaming\\Microsoft\\Protect.

That's great. If you have a moment can you outline what steps you had to change in order to get working. That way we can update the wiki. Thanks.

I followed the wiki, the part I posted here, you just provided the win 7 file path. I had been having problems with my computer recognizing me as the admin. So as an experiment I did a reformat and installed the toolset again. This time it installed perfectly with no problems. I guess that's an extreme solution but it works as well.

Thanks - I've added the Windows 7 path to the appropriate page.
