Try running the game via the ME2 launcher, *not* straight from steam or the ME2 app.

I saw other people having this problem in old threads, and it always plagued me, but now that I start with the launcher, it works perfectly, every time. If I ever forget, at least 75% of the time the sound drops out like it used to. I can't explain why this makes a single bit of sense, and it can't fix everything, but it sure helped me. Give it a try if you're running into this problem.
