All things considered, I don't think its petty to want some kind of I SO FREAKING TOLD YOU SO moment because the absence of proof is not the proof of absence, and the council could have at least made an attempt to provide OTHER evidence as to how/why the Protheans vanished, how the Geth could have possibly created Sovereign, etc... At least if they had other theories, or "proof" that could go both ways I would sympathize with them more.

As it is right now, their refusal to believe Shepard is more because the plot-demands it more than anything else. They're holding the stupid-ball with all their might. Shepard must be right, must bring the many species of the universe together almost singlehandedly to defeat the greatest threat to all sentient-life in the galaxy.

It's more than a little transparent, and I have to say, now on my third playthrough of ME2, I'm a bit dissapointed. I wish that there was a little more than Vigil conveniently being no-longer functional, and the scraps of Sovereign dissapearing to account for the Council's steadfast disbelief and disdain for Shepard's actions and beliefs.

On a side note, in ME 2 when they fire the upgraded weapons at the Collector vessel, instead of cutting to Joker who said, "How do you like that you sons-of-****es?!", it should have cut to Garrus in fire control who says, "Calibrations are finish ****es! Now we have reach and flexibility!"
