I have just spent the last hour trying to figure out Tactics = with little to no luck.

I just don't get it.

Are tactics "set off" by doing something else? Like a Trigger that you need or are they automatic?

What is the best way to use them? Or set them up?

Do they work while you are actually playing that character or only when you are playing a different character? Example - if I am playing Hawke will Bethany's tactics work? Or if I am playing Bethany is that the only time my Hawke tactic 'tree' work?

At first I looked at it like EQ2's chain = when you use a certain ability or attack it will trigger a set of options that will make the attack stronger.

The more I researched the more confused I got - any help would be Greatly Appreciated! Thanks!!!

Check out suicidalbaby's guide. He has an excellent and can't do without guide to tactics in my opinion.

Yeah, tactics don't work on your controlled party member and If you switch to Bethany only then does tactics work on hawke. Which usually means Hawke will switch something on that I don't want him too.

I'm on PC so I manually take health potions switching between characters instead of self < 25% take health potion .(Is that how to do that?)

The computer does a pretty good job of setting tactics up for you. I think like: Enemy grouped of two than fireball or Enemy grouped of three than firestorm. At least it gives you an idea of what to do.
