I like biotics and i like combat, but i don't really want to play vanguard because i don't like the idea of all that close combat that comes with the class.
can anyone suggest any biotic / combat alternatives?
also is it possible to play vanguard effectively at mid-range? i thinking of something kind of like thane (sniper + biotics) or samara (assault rifle + biotics)
thanks
combat / biotic suggestions?

I play as a mid ranged Vanguard who uses AR or the SMG for most cases. Ive had success at using squad mates as a distraction and using Charge on the enemies in the back to pick them of one by one.

Adepts work best at mid-range and all Shepards use guns.

I would suggest the Barrier Adept. With Heavy barrier you can stay out of cover longer and shrug off rockets like the afternoon rain. With the added durability I can play the Adept like a soldier. Usinusing guns as my primary offensive and biotics for crowd control and finishing moves. I go with assault rifle training for mid-range combat.

You can play the Vanguard at mid-range pretty well, but it lacks the biotic options that the Adept provides.
If you want to play a biotic-focused Vanguard, I suggest:
1 - Incendiary Ammo
0 - Cryo Ammo
4 - Heavy Charge
4 - Improved Shockwave
4 - Pull Field
4 - Champion (for the improved cooldown)
4 - Heavy/Area Reave or Enhanced Stasis
You can then take Assault Rifle training to compliment your pistol and SMG.
For another alternative, you could turn a Soldier into a biotic-lite character:
4 - Adrenaline Rush
4 - Heavy Concussive Shot *
4 - Disruptor Ammo **
1 - Incendiary Ammo **
0 - Cryo Ammo
4 - Commando *
4 - Crippling Slam **
* Concussive Shot is an anti-barrier ability (3.5x damage versus barriers), but lacks the damage upgrades that biotics/tech can get. To get the most of it you need to focus on power damage: Heavy Concussive Shot (100 base damage), Commando (+15% power damage), and any +power damage armor or armor pieces you have. Without DLC, you are limited to N7 Chestplate (+3%) and Amplifier plates (+5%, for purchase on Illium). You can also use Concussive Shot as a very weak throw.
** Crippling Slam can incapacitate targets for about 8 seconds, but you can also use it for Warp bombs: use slam, and then have Miranda or Thane warp the target while they are still in the air. The timing can be difficult (about 1 to 1.5 second window), so the cripple duration is helpful in case you miss the timing.
Alternatively, you can put just 1 point in Slam, and then evolve Incendiary Ammo to Inferno Ammo.

thanks again

You can always go for an Adept or Sentinel with advanced training Assault Rifle or Sniper Rifle.

Sentinels would probably work seeing as they have Biotic and Tech Powers. I'm not sure if you can use Warp to detonate Throw or not but if you bring a teammate who knows Pull you can set off Warp Bombs. Also Sentinels with maxed out Tech Armor can reach 800+ shields (I'm pretty sure).
Another possible solution which has been previously suggested is an Adept which offers more flexibility in teammates seeing as you have Warp and Singularity to detonate. For both of these classes you can choose Sniper/AR Training on the Collector Ship. So if you have the M-96 Mattock you'll be good combatwise. If not the Mattock the Vindicator works well too.
(Gah, I just want to use Tab to indent!)

I have been fiddling around with a biotic-focused Sentinel lately:
4 - Throw
4 - Warp
4 - Assault Armor
1 - Overload
0 - Cryo Blast
4 - Guardian
4 - Crippling Slam
You can bring Miranda and Thane to Warp-bomb your Slam. You can bring Jack, Jacob, and Samara/Morinth to Pull targets before you Throw or Warp-bomb them. Warp will not detonate a target affected by Throw.

(Oh also the 800+ Shields thing needs to have Geth Shield Boost, Barrier, or possibly Fortification)
