I always took it as Shepard didn't rememeber anything about dying. He/She was under the impression that they were just seriously injured until he/she was clued in that he/she actually died.ThePwener wrote...

They should really have kept up with that. It could've tied in with Shepard coping with his/her death/revival.
Thanks for bringing it up, I forgot to add it. It is strange that a Shepard who says he believes in God in ME1 does not question his faith when he is brought back to life. He doesn't even seem bothered by the whole thing. BW (in my opinion) messed up with the Lazarus Project in more then one way.
Religion should play a bigger role

Firstly I feel most of the religous descriptions offered so far have been sufficient for the purposes of rounding out alien culture. We know what the various alien races believe in and why. It also gives aliens such as Liara the excuse of saying alternate exclamatory phrases.
There's also a bigger issue here and that is the influence of space travel and encountering alien species. Most religions are created to explain the world (why it exists, etc. ) and or to function as foundation to civilization. Afterall what's more effective at stopping your big brutish neighbor from stealing your goats? Saying you're going to beat him up or telling him that there's an all powerful god that will strike him down/some realm of suffering he'll go to?
Regardless encountering aliens would likely shake if not outright nullify most religions. In which case religions will likely have to drastically alter their dogmas so that they are in essence something new or fade away as the old explanations no longer hold up. Obviously the actual discovery of aliens would likely lead to a crisis of faith in many of the worlds larger religious sects. To me it's doubtful the more deitistic or creation-based religions would perserve. Afterall what do you say to Rick the Blurbgonian Alien Biologist who's species was traveling space before our planet even existed? And Rick so happens to have some entertaining videos showing the formation of Earth and subsequent life. Perhaps you consider Rick a foul space Demon, maybe a God, or maybe an Alien who's know a bit more then you do.
I think this crisis of faith would be true even for aliens themselves. Well at least those that have similar belief systems. Frankly in the presence of a relatively peacful galactic civilization I think most formal religions would be forgone as they only serve to strain inter-species relations and most importantly trade. Remember Mr. Big Stupid Jellyfish. Of course if we encounter the Space Romans or decide to be Space Romans ourselves well then things may be entirely different.
So yes I think the amount of religious or spirtual aspects in Mass Effect have been more then sufficiently explored. I don't really want Bioware to try and intepret future human beliefs. Cause frankly I don't really want to know what the Roman Catholic Church's stance is on intimate relations with Asari.
And actually this brings up a good point that many here have objected on. That is the spirtual aspect of Shepard's Death. Personally I think Bioware did the right thing. Rather then having some deep spirtual interaction with God/Zeus/Buddha/Saren in Purgatory, Shepard simply remembers nothing. (Which is probably what would happen if you lost your oxygen supply in space. You really wouldn't have much possibility for some sort of near death dream as you literally are losing all your oxygen.) I don't see why this is such an issue since frankly if I died and was revived I don't expect I would remember anything but the breif black out and fade-in and fade-out of waking consciousness.
Of course if your complaint is Shepard doesn't reflect spirtually enough on his/her death... well that's a different story. Frankly I don't think there's much Bioware could do except have Shepard sit down and start shaking in the corner. But I think people are forgetting Shepard is a trained and experienced Soldier. Death is no stranger Shepard, especially by ME2. Whatever guilt and life crisis Shepard may have with death has likely been dealt with or buried away at this point in time. Also I see it unbecoming of Shepard to break down over the fact he/she died. Shepard gets killed nearly every day. Why would getting magically revived bother them when Medigel has likely saved his or her life countless times before?
I really don't see Shepard being afraid of their death. Failure yes, but not death. I mean Shepard's definining attribute is basically being fearless. I mean Shepard is taking on million year old god machines of death. I'd say Shepard has got a platinum set for that. I expect by ME3's end Shepard will paint their face blue, wear a kilt, and being yelling "FREEDOM!!!" at Harbinger.

Apparently Chell being adopted offended one person so Foxs News deemed it news worthy enough to attack Portal 2.
Edit: Actually Bogsnot1 is right it wasn't Fox News. I need to get some sleep before I make a bigger ass of myself.

Actually it was WBTV -- but the fact remains. I remember watching the clip, and the little girl basically said that she wasn't offended at all. Then her father basically said that she didn't know what she was talking about, and that she actually was offended -- or something along those lines. The man was clearly a fvcking idiot.
I'm adopted, and I wasn't offended in the slightest when that mission came up. Especially since Portal 2 had one of the best endings in the Hall of Great Endings.

I liked how in FO I ran into Christians the only ones who weren't nut jobs and or wanting to kill me in the name of something sure she lived in a filthy tent area and barely said two words to me the only one of the whole religious topics to barely hint at what religion she truly was but I got to say a few verses to her and I got to weigh in she was the only religion in that game that allowed for a weigh in you could tell her you agreed or that she was a nutter like all the rest.
It was odd I couldn't comment on the truly nutter ones like the people who thought sacrificing to their god was great thing to do or the tree people I would like to be able to say something on religious grounds but if BW wants to avoid that like the plague I'll take like we got in DA were we just witness various religions doing whatever religious thing that gave them comfort or strength.
I wasn't bothered by the chantry primarily because it was made up and didn't force itself onto me making my character have to say whatever I liked how at one point I could say stuff your chantry ways because it was a pagan ideal but seeing various people prying alone, in groups, or sighting their gods was fine I could go in there a non believer in their eyes and still do the taks even the Ash's episode while diving into religion on many fronts one pagan ritual was even brought up with the jar and water bit but it was all there you did the thing or you walked away no harm no foul.
The only religion in game that connects directly to the reapers is the hanar but if the reapers come to Earth and claim to be god that would really kick off a storm in the humans away from Earth overhearing some people saying they will return to Earth to see god and others screaming like that Batarian "preacher" that the reapers aren't gods but the devil's angels in disguise would be something to hear and I would expect it.

Ok if the girls dad was offended for her he's either A: too sensative or B: a gold digger looking to force portal 2 to shell out big cash to make him feel not offended
my moneies on B.

Quite funny, I remember the news here in the U.K reporting on the idiocy of these american journalists. It's the only reason I know about it, was fun to see the guy from gametrailers just basically say "no your wrong... yes that too is also wrong.. have you even played this game?... why am I even bothering to debate with this idiot"

Although, considering that some species -- turian and drell specifically -- are open enough to embrace the philosophies of other species, I'd be very amused to encounter a sect which unironically worships the Invisible Pink Unicorn, or Flying Spaghetti Monster, or the Church of the Smiling Vagina.

I think this topic is all the proof needed that religion can be divisive and should be left out.
This thread doesn't seem that divisive to me. I think my standards are much different than most though
The developers didn't touch on religion, I think to maximize sales potential. Getting all preachy about being non-religious or religious will put people off. Not a good marketing strategy. They left it open enough for the player to determine their character's motivations and beliefs, which is a pretty good way to deal with it.
Not everything need be spoonfed to the player. The Lazarus project has some obvious theological implications, but rather than promote any one set of theologies, they just kind of let the player form their own opinion on it.
I agree. While we have some with clear differences in perspective, most of them are being respectful when they disagree.
