Anyone wonder if we'll ever find out what the real origin of the Darkspawn is?  The entire 'man trided to enter the Maker's City' makes great religious propoganda for the Chantry, but I doubt it's the real reason.

One of my theories has to do with the elves, actually.  About the time they lost their immortality is when the Tevinter Imperium was major.  And the first Blight came not long after, right?  I don't really buy the 'mankind has cooties that makes elves lose their immortality' thing.  I'm wondering if the loss of the immortality and the Darkspawn are linked.  Some sort of epic revenge.  It'd fit -- look at the Dalish quest, some elves are really willing to push revenge /far/.

Anyone have any other theories?

Well I think that the chantry version is a modification of the truth. Just like most of the other things in game.

Blood mages sought immortality(the black city), and thru their magic transformed themselves into the old gods (dragons of great power) but were eventually driven underground by an organized resistence (the maker struck them down) and they hid there until the darkspawn reincarnates them.

The taint likely became involved when the blood mages made deals or used magic that originated from utterly evil spirits. Thus allowing a portion of evils spirit/soul/power to seep into the real world. Much how abominations are created in merging demons with mages, the demons twisted mortal vessels to best serve them, such as brood mothers, and ultimately seeking the old gods as conduits for themselves, possibly as part of a huge plan, knowing that when they gave the old gods their power, it would not be enough without an army to back them, an army that the spirit(demons) would have when they possessed the old god.

As for the elves, I think the idea is more of a fall from grace than mankind has cooties, it could be every elven city had a TRUE great tree before that actually blessed them with long (eternal to a mortals eyes) life, it could be some curse brought upon the entire people, it could have been one leader, or small group of leaders (or religious agents) knew of the ritual of immortality(keeping it secret seems fairly obvious) and performed it on every child on birth, and when the elves were almost wiped out, they lost all (or most) that knew the true way.
