My game keeps crashing periodically after any amount of game time (20 minutes or a few hours if I'm lucky).
The game freezes during any gameplay or dialogue scene, video and sound stop, controls become unresponsive and sometimes the screen turn into black/blue bars requiring a complete restart.

I've tried uninstalling/reinstalling.
Changing task process to high.
Updated my video drivers to the latest one.
Updating everything on Windows Update.

Operating System: Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate
CPU: Intel® Core™2 Quad CPU    Q9400  @ 2.66GHz
RAM: 4GB
Video Card: ATI Radeon HD4870
Audio: (Realtek High Definition Audio) 6.0.1.5780
DirectX: DirectX 10.0  (Mar2009) or later

I'm running a physical version of the game. Patched to 1.02.
Game has not been modified in anyway.

Anyone encountered this problem and know how to solve it?

The colored bars usually indicate a crash in the vid card. This can be from not having correct directX-ie 9.0c installed, driver conflict, bad video card, bad fan on video card, or bad power supply.

You may try reinstalling directX 9.0c from the disc or searching microsoft site. Making sure you are running in compatibility mode for XP would also be a good idea, sp2-3. You have updated the video card drivers, so that is probably not it, could also be heat so a program like speedfan from cnet would allow you to monitor fan and temps on your rig, so that is a good point to start. What type of power supply do you have, ie wattage, age and brand? Also a visual inspection of the card and maybe a reseating may be in order as well.

Thanks for the response but for now I believe I have a solution. In another thread a guy recommened changing the screen size to borderless, no crashes so far. Will try your suggestions if problem reappears.

Okay, it wasn't the solution, I just managed to play for longer. Gonna check my PSU and internal bits later.
How does one revert Direct X to a previous version?

You don't revert they run side by side, and the game will still show DirectX10. If you changed resolutions and it played longer, then I really suspect heat as the issue. Get speedfan and or another monitor program and check your gpu temps.

Yeah, heat was the issue. Been playing with my fan manually controlled to higher speeds. Smooth sailing. Thanks for the help.
