This is my first attempt at Insanity, and I chose the soldier because many people say it's very easy. And it was, for a while. I breezed through the first set of recruitment missions dying only when I got cocky and tried to charge. And even on Horizon, I was breezing through until the first Scion encounter, near the Biotic Damage upgrade, but I managed to grind through that by changing my tactics a bit.

But now I've reached the final "room" and have sworn quite a lot at that first "wave" of two Scions and a lot of husks. Two Scions? Managable. Husk Rush? Easy. But together they are ridiculous. I imagine this is going to be like ME3 where "Suppressive" enemies are combined with "Cover busters."

Any tactics for this? I've tried taking cover and gunning the Scions down, Staying back and sniping them just after the doors close, running in circles to defeat the husks, heading to the left where the medkit is and each time, I'll either be swarmed by somany husks that Shepard gets paralysed, destroyed by the Scions, or a mixture of both.

I have heard that there's a place just before you enter the "room" where you can see the scions, and therefore, snipe them. Can anyone confirm this?

Yes I can confirm that you can hang back and not pass through the doors once they open, taking out the Scions from there. I've done it with the Phalanx pistol and the engineer's Attack Drone (Insanity).

The first time I played Insanity I was a soldier too. Upon entering the area I stormed up the middle and used my heavy weapon on the 2 Scions, then set my squadmates to finish them off.

Yes, you can snipe them if you just stay on the stairs. If you look thru the sniper scope you can see part of their "arms" poking out. It takes a long time and a lot of ammo ( may have to use your other guns as well ) but if you kill both of them by shooting their arms no husks show up.

But you have a good strategy, I suggest you bring the Avalanche next time. When I first played this mission on insanity I thought this part was impossible, but if you use a heavy weapon ( I prefer Avalanche ) go to the place with the medkit, wait until the first bunch of husks join the Scions ( they run right next to the two of them ) and then fire about 10 rounds into the bunch and killl the first set of husks and damage the Scions. Then you have to run around and kill the husks while avoiding the Scions.
 This is insanity on xbox.

What I did on this mission was, literally, run around in circles kiting the husks and shooting them with my shotgun. It probably sounds easier than it actually is, but it worked for me. I'm sure it isn't much help, but oh well. (I was using imo the best shotgun in the game, the GPS which made it really really easy)

I do the same for this part. :D

I also try to leave the squad in a corner on the map so I don't have to keep reviving them, and keep some of the medigel for my emergencies.

I focus first on the husks and the last time I did that part I think I had the Particle Beam that I saved to bring down the Praetorians barrier.

But I've liked the Avalanche here, when I've researched it.

Do this if your character is new and you're unable to beat the sequence normally. This is easily the hardest part of the fight anyway, so once you get past it it's more or less smooth sailing if you were having an easy time earlier in the mission.

I have taken the Avalanche due to it's high AOE damage against protection, but I assumed the Praetorian fight would be harder, so I was saving the Ammo. I'll try using it next time.

Does anyone know what the default freeze time is for the avalanche? As in, on small enemies like regular mercs. I only started using it recently because I found out that it's a very long time.

For the Protorian: Particle Beam his Barrier (nothing tears through it like the CPB) take his armor down. When he stimps, run to the other side of the map. Easy.

The key for me is to get rid of the Scions asap.  I usually run to the left to the platform and place my squad there like the video ryoldschool posted shows.  You should be safe from the Shockwaves there.
I focus my squads fire on one of the Scions until it dies and then focus on the other.  Your job is to keep the husks off your squaddies and snipe the Scions when you have time.
 - heavy dose of adrenaline rush+Collector AR+Mantis no HW.

If you don't want to engage you can stand outside the area and snipe the Scions and use the sniper scope to aim squadmate powers.
 - it's an Infiltrator run but the tactics remain the same for a soldier.

I always took out the Husks first then the Scions, circle strafing the Scions from a distance, since their Shockwave attacks moves in a straight line, while kiting the Husks.  For a Soldier, that would involve a couple shots to strip a Husk's armor (very easy with Mattock, Vindicator, or Heavy Pistol plus Incendiary Ammo) then finishing it off with my bonus power for that mission Neural Shock (Slam is just as effective but when Horizon comes along you can already have the tech cooldown upgrade for really quick NS cooldowns that don't interfere with Adrenaline Rushing).

And that's not even mentioning squadmates and their powers (Mordin is great for this mission with Full Cryo Blast, insta-kills un-armored Husks, and Incinerate).
