Looks like Blizzard took another shot to the face this past quarter.  Another 300k subs lost.

Should make a lot of the doomsayers happy.

I'm sure most of us saw this coming, especially after Cataclysm. Should be interesting to see what they do to stem the tide.

I was reading an article about how Activision may be in serious trouble in a year or so. Apparently this and COD becoming too over saturated will lead to Activision making little to no profit next year.
May or may not be feasible I don't know.

I'm not a big fan of "pay to play" gaming, but this makes a lot of sense to me...

In this economy, it has to be one of the 1st things people see when they're looking at what to cut back on.

Not sure what exactly you mean by 'becoming too over saturated'?

As far as I know, CoD is one of the highest selling video game franchises in existance.  Likewise, WoW is one of the most profitable games ever made - and it's been running for what, 10 years?

It wouldn't surprise me if WoW subscriptions are finally dying off a little - it's about time Blizzard announced something on their new MMO that they've been working on for a few years.

whats that like the rest of us dropping a penny? Whatever anything they MIGHT lose from this will be more than made up for when Diablo 3 comes out.
Nothing lasts forever many people should be getting tired of it especially those who have been playing nothing else.

Looks like Final Fantasy XIV is really cutting into World of Warcraft's profits.

There has been eleven COD games in about nine years apparently consumers are going to stop buying them as there all the same.. But considering ,yet again, that MW3 has outsold Black Ops on preorders that may not be anytime soon.

the reason Black ops sold so well is because all the mw3 guys thought everyone would migrate to the next game.

and honestly, WoW isnt even fun to play. its just a chat system inside a skinner box.

It is pretty incredible they are losing as few as they do. We speak of of a game that was originally released in 2004. If we assume WoW loses 0.5 million subs every year, they'd still be the largest western MMO in 10 years:p I couldn't believe my ears when they tolkd they had 12 million subs sround release of 2nd expansion. Game that was 5 years old back then was still growing. Is sick.

As other people have mentioned, this is about the perfect time for The Old Republic to come out. I think a lot of people, even WOW fans agree that the series kind of peaked with Wrath of the Lich King and many people are ready to move on to something new and better.

EA is really taking the fight to Activision with Battlefield 3 being their answer to Call of Duty but to take on the MMORPG giant itself head on takes some serious cajones. If Bioware cannot do it, nobody can.

Fortunately, the game has been in development for a while so I think we're going to get a very polished product with The Old Republic.

Perfect time for The Old Republic to come out was around 2006. From point of view of average gamer, there isn't anything terribly broken or dysfunctional about Cataclysm-era WoW as such. On contrary, at least early on many found Cata  much more entertaining than WOTLK ever was. Yet, it is losing some hundred thousand players monthly atm. I can only assume they are leaving for same reason I did. They are sick and tired of the gameplay, look, feel, everything. Enough is enough and all that.

Switching to another, brand new MMO  featuring gameplay that has very similar functionality, controls, approach to abilities and overall vibe to Wow is a horrifying thought. It has resulted in somewhat schitzo situation where I love most things I ever read regarding TOR and almost without exception hate everything I see. (=gameplay vids etc) Aside from little..bulky combat animations there isn't anything  wrong with it; it just looks exactly like any MMORPG released around mid 00s. It takes amazing writing and some severe spinning of em dialogue wheels to remedy this collective WoW hangover.

Wow is still fun for me. Of course I went back to playing after five years of saying I would never play again. It has it's moments but is still generally a fun game. I'm still surprised it's as strong as it is considering how old it is.

With that said, I think I'm only playing wow until Gears of War 3 is released.  After that I'm going back to consoles games.

Sadly, I have my doubts about how good TOR will be in the story department. It's the same Jedi vs. Sith story and some of the characters seem to similiar to the movie-era characters. I also wished they would come up with their own armor or ship designs instead of variations of previous ones. Judging by the videos, it doesn't look much different than any other era in Star Wars.

I'll still give it a chance.

All I can say is HAHA. The day when WoW gets shut down completely will be a good day indeed;)
