I'm playing another playthrough as a mage, since I lost my canon Warden savegame some days ago. I'm trying to play an elven mage that makes the same decisions for main quests, but choose different spells-trees. I was afraid of doing so, since I have always felt attached to elemental magic, but I'm surprised! ^_^ I'm having lots of fun with the "Walking Bomb" spell! (Never tried before, so imagine my surprise when I saw darkspawn falling as puppies after the explosion :D) It is me or the damage is far superior to other area-effect spellls as fireball? O_o

Anyway, I'm centering myself into that "bomb" spell tree and morphing school. I always thought of them as minor or secondary ways to evolve mages, but experience is telling me the contrary :) My problem is... since "walking bomb" requires much more micro-management than the elemental schools, is there any other spell- tree that helps me to use it well? Right now I'm using cold spells to maximize bursts and control the friendly fire. My next goal is "paralyze" spells. But, maybe, there are better options. Any suggestions? ^_^

I like the entropy school. Sleep is very quick cast, and helps the things to stay together for the explosion. Mass paralize is great too, though it takes a while to cast.

Glyphs are nice too. I usually found myself trying to use a lot of paralyzing spells and range attacking companions when using bombs. Friendly fire with those can be very brutal :).

Oh, thank you! Sleep and glyphs are great ideas ^_^ I didn't know that "mass paralyze" had cast-time ._. (I guess, in the same way as the blizzard or fire storms), so I'm not going fot hem.

By the way, is there any "spell-combo" that involves Walking bomb?

I'll copy&paste this here.

Spells That I find useful Listed by School.
(Im Ignoring Arcane and Primal at the moment, I do suggest getting Rock Armor and Arcane Shield)
(I favour Spirit and Nature damage, with tactical options.)

- Creation -
Heal - Rejuvenate - Regeneration
Glyph of Paralysis - Glyph of Warding - Glyph of Repulsion   (Paralysis Explosion will Stun The Archdemon FYI)
Spell Wisp - Grease - Spellbloom - Stinging Swarm

- Spirit -
Mana Drain - Mana Cleanse - Spell Might - Mana Clash
Walking Bomb - Death Syphon - Virulent Wlaking Bomb - Animate Dead
Mind Blast - Force Field - Telekinetic Weapons - Crushing Prison

- Entropy -
Weakness - Paralyse - Miasma - Mass Paralysis
Vulnerability Hex - Affliction Hex (They Stack)
Drain Life - Death Magic - Curse of Mortality (Curse of Mortality does alot of damage)

Nope but Affliction Hex+Stinging Swarm+Virulent Walking Bomb is pretty effective on groups.

After avoiding Glyphs as useless for a long time, I discovered then and I have suddenly turned into a convert.

Two of then are fundamental: Glyph of Paralisis, and Glyph of Repulsion -that one let me solo three elite warriors in a duel (from the Quests and Legends mod), it is incredibly useful.

Best of all, if you cast both of then you have the spell combo of paralisis explosion, wich woks like mass paralisis, only WAY faster, the only problem beng it has friendly fire.

Thank you for your suggestions! ^_^

@Last Darkness: That sounds fun... never tried Stinging Swarm before. It never calls my attention because that tree has some doubtufylly useful spells on it. But whenever I reach final levels and get the tomes for reasign abilities in the expansion, I will try ^_^ Right now I have decided to center on Sleep and ice for group control. It's incredibly fun :D

@Rakhasa: Yeah! Glyphs are cool. I was as you at the begining, but in one of my playthroughs I spent some poitns on them with Wynne... that spell combo is brutal :D Im going for them when I complete the entropy-sleep spells ^_^

Well... I have started with the main quests now. And I'm having lots of trouble ._. Until now, I played the secondary quests from Denerim and the "premium" content. It was fun (surprinsingly fun). But now... I'm in the mage tower, and battles are extremely challenging ._.

My problem is that I'm unable to control groups long enough. Cold cone and sleep serves right for some moments, but not enough to put the explosion when and where I want. And then veil demons and Templars have strong inmmunitties that make things even worse ._.

Probably its just a bad choice of partners (Leliana, Wynne and Dog), but I'm a bit dissapointed.

bad choice definately... where is your tank? all the character you used are squishy.... as shale said... you need someone to hold threat and now without a tank, you are being squished... splat!

They were wearing crap equipment ._. It was frustrating because I was stupid enough to buy/keep good armors and daggers, but, in fact, too good for them to equip it! sigh.... anyway, I have finally managed to arrive to the Fade part, and after that, things got smoother ^_^ I killed Uldred without problems.

Right now I'm with dalish quest, this time using Sten, Dog and Morrigan. I'm using the grey warden armor for the big qunari guy, and a brutually effective axe (not sure how I got that, probably for completing one of the dlcs, I guess). The witch is wearing kick-ass equipment too ^_^

For now, I'm having less trouble than before, and starting to get the idea of bomb-sleep-cold to obliterate big groups ^_^ Also, having two mages in the group helps a lot for quick-killing bomb infected individuals. My most feared trouble now are the elemental inmunnities. I'll try to figure them out, if I'm able to make it wihtout frustrate myself!

Ok sounds good then, with Two Mages you can also work on each of them having one of the spells needed for Storm of the Century.

You dont need a tank ever in the game. Its not a MMO, there are no bad choices for party. You can play anything you want. The stranger the better :P
One of the coolest parties i've seen is 3 Rogues as rangers with spider pets and Morrigan in Spider form. You could do the same with wolves and dog for a Pack theme.

Try Warden Archer Warrior, Alister Weapon and Shield, Sten Two-hand, Ohgren Duel Wield.

I Had Alistair as the "Tank" even though he was heavily invested into Str.   With Marics Sword and Shield and Cailens Armor. Reaver/Berserker

Sten was Two-Hander with Starfang and Blood Dragon Armor and Champion/Templar.

Ohgren I had with Duel Veshialle Axes in Evons+Wades Armor as Berserker/Templar.

Thats a rather unimpressive video, you should have linked his Nightmare Solo Archedemon Fight instead.
www.youtube.com/watch

The problem of course is hes a Fire/Frost Mage.  Two of strongestly resisted schools of magic for the Archedemon.
And he dosnt tacticaly use his spells or likly have them.

I wish I had my Mages videos, I could show things like the Solo Mother Fight on Nightmare Speed Run.

I may have to make some, I am planing a new mage play through anyway.

I use mostly bug fix mods.

But I go get Ohgren after Lothering and take him to the circle tower after that.

Ohgren as ive said before has unique dialog for the Mage Tower/Fade and other places hes normaly not at. (Because most people do Orzamaar last)

If you consider yourself not skilled, probably it will get a bit tough. Even so, in easy mode problems are not as frequent ^_^

I think that there are two critical points on Deep Roads quest: the battle with the queen spider, and the final encounter with Caridin/Branka. Anyway, you can always use the "trick" to travel to the camp if stuck in the deepest parts of the dwarf kingdom.

I consider myself a pretty mediocre player and I was able to complete Orzamar in difficult mode. I wont say that it was an easy trip, but certainly not as difficult as I thought it would be.

@tyrannosaur56 & @Salaya

Yeah its pretty difficult, I play some pretty extreme builds but theres plenty of options that early on.
Ive never done it but you might be able to get away with just getting to the point where you get Ohgren and head to the deep roads then leave and go elsewhere. Im curious how that plays out since Ohgren isnt a oficial party member until after the events of Orzamaar.

Party composition amoung other things is of course very important along with tacticaly playing.

I'm sorry to necro this thread -but I have finally managed to complete the game with my experimental-bombing mage ^_^

Thank you for ideas, folks, it was a nice playthrough to experiment with. I played in hard, trying to fit companions for every specific quest (wich lead me to some nightmarish situations, like the mage tower or Ser Cauthrien fight). Anyway, I think this was my first time playing Origins that difficutly lasted so long. The need of control hordes with various players to maximize bombs, got me some rewarding and fun moments (at the end, I was an expert in activating miasma-mass paralyze and then bombs to produce chain explosions ^_^ )

I'm planning to try some other class combinations I've never focused. Some people say rogues are weakest class in origins (my only playthrough with one was the archery-ranger spec; tough, but rewarding), but I'm curious to build an assasin with emphasis on stealth-cloak and two weapons ^_^
