Rock Band 2
It may not be known as critical perfection, but it remains my favorite game of all time for quite a few reasons - one of them a somewhat personal reason. It was a few years ago, when the music genre was at a much higher interest to the masses. I remember renting it on the Xbox 360, which unfortunately passed away later due to the red ring(RIP, Xbox.). I still had the RB1 gear, but they were quite beat up.
Many months later, I'd realized at about 255 pounds, I needed to seriously burn off some weight. It needed to be something better than a bloody gym to pull it off. Owning a PS3 with some money to burn, I bought the RB2 bundle with the much more reliable equipment this time - the drums no longer felt like bashing on cardboard, and the guitar didn't die after the 100th song.
I'd already been a huge music fan from PaRappa the Rapper/Um Jammer Lammy, through the Bemani Series, and onto the GH/RB generation as well. However, something about rock band really had it better than the rest. Harmonix had managed to take what Konami had originally started, and brought it to life in a much more accessible format with Guitar Hero. Being able to bring all the instruments in one package, with the largest soundtrack at the time and a vastly improved career mode... it was a beautiful thing. Rock Band 2 managed to take most of the issues with the original and tweak it to a much better version than the first.
I remember trying out the additional cymbals for the first time on songs like Souls of Black by Testament and Painkiller by Judas Priest. It was like a frenzy of mindless smashing, flailing from one drum to the next, hungering for more as the devil's music continued to blaze on. As much as I prefer games with some form of meaningful narrative or the like, there's no replacement for the feeling, that rush you get as the relentless fury of the drums builds to a climax. It's gaming nirvana. And that's just one of the instruments. Over 100 pounds less after the fact, it was official - Rock Band 2 was my favorite game of all time.
Here's to you, Rock Band 2.

That is a very good one. That wasn't the first game I ever played (that was Super Mario Bros.) but it was the first one that was exclusively mine.
I retract my earlier choice... I'm gonna have to think long and hard about this...

Zelda:Ocarina of Time for me... I think it was the first game that I truly had fun exploring the world and seeing all I could do... I really love a few of the songs in that game as well. Just one of those games that still brings a smile to my face when I think about it.... ahh....

Either Oblivion or Morrowind for me -- maybe Skyrim will assume that mantle.
Although the original Masters of Orion is pretty close - loved that game!
And the Civ series.

Overall, I'd have to give it to either Starcraft or Deus Ex.

It would have to be Legacy of Kain:Soul Reaver. Pretty much my first love on the PS1, a bit dated but so awesome.

Half Life 2
Not only, is this one of those games that, even To THIS day, still manage to look good, but it also some of the best gameplay designes of any video game, making the pacing sublime, also, it still probably has one of the best Physics engines ever.
Along with that, it represented a very strong advance in gaming technology, and from HL2 alone, we have gotten many other great game(in case you didn't know, Portal is a Mod of Half Life 2, for example)
in Addition to that, it has one of the most complicated, Deepest Sci-Fi stories i've ever had pleasure of seeing.
And, to top all that, the game represents something very big for me.
Because back in 2001, my PC got broke and i couln't fix it, i had to remove my Graphics card and put a very basic one, that would simply allow to go through the Internet or just use it for work, and from that moment, i got really away from the gaming loop.
3 straight years and i thought i simply wasn't a gamer anymore, but then, i saw an add for Half Life 2, and i was like "Holy S**t, that looks.... interesting", but since i didn't had gaming pc anymore, i couldn't buy it.
Thankfully, a friend of mine said that he had played the game and that he thought it was amazing, and he insisted that i bought it, even if i had to play it with S***ty graphics.
i agreed, and bought the game....
and once i started playing, i remembered why is it that i loved being a gamer, because i could see fantastic stories, relate and connect to characters, see peoples imagination being broad to life in wonderful worlds, while still having fun.
and of course, things went very well, i bought a powerful gaming rig to play it maxed out (Holy S**t was it impressive back then), and ever since then i've been a gamer again.
i owe this game a lot, and even though Q*bert was the very first game i ever played back in 1988(yes, Q*bert, if you can believe it), if it weren't for Half Life 2, i would not be a gamer right now.

I don't think I could name a single game that is my absolute favourite of all time. It's a decision that is far too difficult.
There are a handful that I hold in the highest regard, though. It would be more accurate to say that I have a group of games that are my favourite of all time.

There's no such thing as the best game of all time, but here is a list of nine games that I, personally, believe qualify for the mantle:
1. Shenmue (series)
2. Mass Effect (series)
3. Metal Gear Solid (series)
4. Resident Evil (series)
5. Red Dead Redemption
6. Ninja Gaiden (series)
7. Dead Space (series)
8. Half-Life 2
9. Silent Hill (series)
Bottom line: It's better to think of it collectively rather than otherwise. I'd find it incredibly difficult to name a game the best of all time, regardless of how great it may be. But do I think it is worthy of that honor in one form or another? If so, then that's good enough.
