“Target fixation - I get so engrossed with wailing on my current target at close range that I miss what's going on in the wider battle.”
Ditto. I have better view of the battlefield, consequently high priority targets like archers/mages/elites, with archery. With DW I usually have to pause when the new wave comes in so I can see where did the new mages/archers/elites come in.
“Aggro/threat management - being in melee range and doing a lot of damage, I naturally generate a lot of threat. So I would use talents like Stealth, Evade, etc. to lose threat, but once I start again I would pick it up again in short order. Also being in melee range seems to cause me to "pick up" more enemy attention just due to the proximity.”
This is true. DW generates more threat than archery due to proximity and higher dps. Archery closes the gap, but doesn’t overtake DW dps, because they don’t need to waste time to use all of their threat management tools and they don’t need to move around a lot.
“Bosses - there are just some fights where being in melee range is a bad idea. For e.g. Ancient Rock Wraith, any dragons, Meredith”
A lot of boss attacks can be avoided if you “circle-strafe” if you’re a melee character. Flick in a few hits, watch for the animation, move. Lather, rinse, repeat. This is why when a single enemy is left, all those points you put into con are suddenly a waste.
“What is a typical "sequence" of moves that you do in combat?”
I solo so w/ the dog out, I usually go stealth->twin fangs high priority target->assassinate->backstab->start unending chain on grunts->explosive strike another high priority target. Decoy when I need to drop threat. Inconspicuous is the last option. I just use evade if the enemies are behind/beside me though. If I see a clum of enemies from afar engaging my dog, I usually use miasmic flask before I engage and kill them all. I only use mark of death on elites/bosses.
“What kind of targets to do you go after first? Tank's target? Enemy mages? (Going after this seems to guarantee attracting too much attention for the tank or Varric to peel off me, resulting in my premature nap)”
Since I solo archers 1st since they auto-hit. Then I see if a mage is in his shell. If he’s not, I go after him next. If he is then I go after elites and keep an eye on the mages. Melee grunts are last.
“What do you do against bosses? Pick up a bow?”
Kill them. Though I gotta say I hate waiting on the field while the high dragon is on his perch.
“If something needs to die "right now" and unending chain is near-full or full blow off a Shattering, followed immediately by a twin fangs.”

Shattering?

“From the "in my head" tactics, I take it that I should prioritize enemies attacking my squishies then the ones attacking my tank? For the first fight in Legacy, is going after the Sniper squads first a bad idea? In general I just find DWing a lot less forgiving than archery...”

I suggest going after the snipers 1st. Use stealth/decoy/miasmic flask/invisible friend if they turn on you instead of going after your dog/decoy/party members. It’s downhill when they’re dead.

“10. If you really find yourself being overwhelmed with Stealth still in cooldown, Back-to-back (with Invisible Friend) to Aveline waiting on Hold at the far side of the map. If that still doesn't save you, dump Inconspicuous. You're all clear again.”

On the PS3, inconspicuous does nothing if there’s no other ally (including dog and decoy) near you (within the radius I bet) at that moment for the threat to be redirected to. They’ll still keep attacking you even if they can see an ally of yours a few clicks away. Pretty crappy option.

“Notice that during all attacks in this cycle Hawke is Obscured.”

Nope. Lingering shroud removes your obscure (unless it’s bugged not to) after your 1st action from stealth. Same thing w/ your second action from decoy. I didn’t see you including chameleon’s breath or obscuring fog anywhere there. So that removes the disorienting critcals bonus on most of your actions except the 1st actions out of stealth/decoy. That’s a lot of dps potential dropped. This is why I never take lingering shroud. I’d have to waste time re-obscuring myself after my 1st stealth action via obscuring fog or chameleon’s breath. Everything else is ok.

“I'm just too fragile. I keep finding that out of nowhere, I get one-shotted by some attack I didn't see coming. And then the archers start focusing on me while Stealth and Decoy are on CD... Should I stack + health gear? “

Nope. You just need to strategize/setup/play better. Better gear. Prioritize better. Better tactics.

“I also suggest you forgo Evade, and the entire lower half of Subterfuge. Bring another Rogue and let them cast Chameleon's Breath on Hawke. This with Shadow Veil/Lingering Shroud will up your DPS as well as survivability. I suggest taking Rush instead of Evade. It's an effective AOE crowd control ability and very satisfying to use.”
Evade is much more useful if you know how to use it, meaning it’s targeting area. Why would lingering shroud increase your dps when it removes the obscure effect from your rogue?
“I'm pretty sure there's a skill that gives you 100% chance of a flanking critical - I was really taking advantage of that... thanks for that input though. I really enjoyed playing as a rogue so I might try again and try min/maxing (or whatever term you want to use) on another playthrough.“

That talent is a waste of an ability point if you build and gear properly. Spend that elsewhere.

“Another thing - I'm not sure what are the other rogues' experiences, but I found the duelist vendetta invaluable in Legacy. There's a lot of positioning going on and that really eases on the running around or up stairs etc., even without exploiting CCCs. Some fights are even made trivial (e.g. Genlock alphas).”

While vendetta is awesome, everything else in duelist is crap/mediocre. Assassin and shadow provide more useful talents. I would even rank shadow as the #1 spec between the 3 of them.

I see. So it is that easy to avoid Boss' AOE by observing and anticipating?

Not all. But alot of them. Like when I fought the high dragon solo at nightmare on 50. Really tough and long fight. He has thousands, maybe a million hp on level 50. but I just circle-strafed and used elemental aegis when he went up to the perch. Take note, this was pre-patch so his fireballs still homed on the PS3. I try to kill the dragonlings and dragons quickly though. Dog died often though.
