well hope she's down with Bacchus or Aphrodite, and that she doesn't go all Sekhmet on Shep's arse.

Just remember to keep a lot of wine around, and you're good.

I look very white. My last name is one of the most English last names I can think of. This is because, like many Jews who don't come from entirely Jewish families, my mother is Jewish. Being named Ashley Williams and looking... I dunno, I thought she was a bit Hispanic looking... means nothing when it comes to whether or not she could be Jewish.

But yes, we don't believe in an afterlife. I don't remember Ashley ever mentioning believing in an afterlife, but I'll take your word for it.

Judaism has a belief in the "world to come".

Ashley having the surname Williams doesn't necessarily mean she isn't Jewish.

Williams of course is an English name but many people in the Mass Effect universe are mixed, and Ashley does have a lot of mediterrenean features. For all we know she could have partial Israeli ancestry from her mother's side of the family.

Or she might not, but it can't be automatically ruled out.

Israeli ancestry or semitic features =/= Jewish.  There are Christian and Muslim Israelis, so country of origin means nothing.  There are Ethiopian Jews, so features don't mean anything.

It's rather interesting that the most "prejudiced" character receives scrutiny based on our modern world prejudices.  That's actually a good thing, that a character can spark debate and offer reflection on "real world" issues.

I'm aware of that.

I was just pointing out that having the surname Williams does not rule out partial Jewish ancestry.

So what? Even I am not Christian.B)

Oh, that wonderful convo actually contains one of Shepard's famous tactful one-liners

Ashley
: Dad passed on a few years back, he's probably still watching though, so behave.
Shepard: He's not a zombie is he?

Way to go commander, now go ask Liara if Asari can have babies with their own species

Shep is as foolish as Pentheus. Hopefully not as indignant about his inner self, though.

I had never heard that Jews didn't believe in an afterlife, so after reading your statement I did some internet searching to find out more about it. Only every single page I found said that Jews do believe in an afterlife. I don't suppose you can provide a reference for this statement?

You're right of course, and I meant no disrespect to you.  It may not be obvious, or known, to others.  I prefer to not assume everyone has that knowledge.

As an aside, I work for a Jewish institution, and I've had a lot of non-Jews ask if kosher just means that the food is blessed by a rabbi.

We don't.

I'd qualify that assertion by saying "We don't... not really."

Which is to say, when you die, nothing happens. But when the Messiah arrives, all the Jews, as well as the "righteous among the nations" (particularly groovy goys) get resurrected to chill with the Powers that Be.

But there's no immediate persistence like Christianity claims.

She isn't. She was officially made christian the moment our collective head-canon defined her as such, much like how the Matriarch Bartender will turn out to be Liara's dad because of really, really bad forum speculation.

But what about all that talk in the Torah about being "In the bosom of Abraham"?  What is that, if not an afterlife? I recognize that it's a waiting place and not the resurrection, but still it's some place to be after death, isn't it? *confused*

Meh-taphor, I'd say.

But I'm not a rabbi like Sarah Silverman's sister. I haven't made a life by studying the bible. Some Jewish theologian could very well come along and correct me if it's not actual "Jewish" belief. But for all the Jews I know, the only "place to be after death" is buried in the ground.
