They're meant to be the sci-fi equivalent of an Eldritch Abomination. They're techno-thulus. The fact that they transform the minds and bodies of the lesser creatures that come in contact with them further cements this. They're Lovecraftian horrors, and should no more be explained than should Cthulu itself.

I'll be disappointed if the Reapers just turn out to be some super AI gone amok w/ Pinocchio Syndrome. All this cuz they just wanna be a "real boy". Bah.
Or, if it turns out to be some existential dilemma like the Reapers are really "gamers", and all life in the galaxy is some big game. Every 50,000 they come to delete us in order to make room for a new save. Starting the game all over again.
I wanna know, who and/or what are the Reapers? Who made them? Why do they fatten us up tech wise (along the lines they desire), then come feed on us? If they only needed the genetic paste, they could come after us at any time. Why only when we're at a certain level of...understanding. (Or maybe when we reach that understanding is when we become a threat to them?) Why do they want us to evolve along a certain path? The mass relays are there whether we know how to use them, or not. The Reapers don't need us to open the relays for them.
They feed on us. They're like some bad anti virus/malware program. And we're the perceived virus they have to eradicate. But again, why "grow" us along those lines if it's a threat?
And it's weird that they hate on us when they're partly organic themselves. And why are they so obsessed w/ the Milky Way? It's a big friggin' universe. Yet they've been at this for 37 million years? Really? They sound like a glitched out buggy program to me. Yet, I don't want it that simple.
Maybe they're just the essence...or manifestation of the hateful, destructive "thought waves" that we as organics are constantly putting out there. We hate each other. That's the one consistent theme in ME. The species mistrust and downright hate each other. Always warring. Always trying to destroy each other. No one is innocent.
Perhaps, that's why they wait until we are advanced because that's when we're at our ugliest. Perhaps it is that energy they feed on. That's why we develop along the lines they want because otherwise they wouldn't have what they need to..exist. We're feeding them in more ways than one.
Like "Lord of the Flies"...'maybe there is a Beast....maybe it's us...'
Or, maybe not. Ha! Hell, idk. I just hope BW hasn't written themselves into a corner...cuz I want something...unique. Or at least satisfying. I don't think BW is going to pull the bury it forever because it's so scary card and leave us hanging w/ questions.
