How will Bioware continue the Mass Effect Universe?

I was wondering how will bioware be able to make games after the events of Mass effect 3 seeing how the game has no cannon and the way they are making it sound as if the choices will have a huge impact in ME3. The more i think about the more i realize how badly Bioware shot themselves in the foot if they want to continue the mass series other than prequels. So I've been thinking about ways they could go about this  Would they go a route where they make different scenarios for different games? Or Will it be set so far into the future of the universe the choices wouldn't matter.
Ideas on what bioware could or what you think they will do?

Hasn't been announced yet. I'm hoping the next few games after ME3 will allow you to play as all the races.

Prequels, or side-stories set during the original trilogy. The First Contact War, the RachniWars/Krogan Rebellions, peripheral war stories during the Reaper War, or something. The universe is huge, anything can work without hurting the canon.

I absolutely hate the idea of prequels, lets move on from where we are and lets not go back to the past.

Set in a different part of the galaxy, never visiting worlds that were impacted, using major plot points (galactic turmoil after Reaper invasion!) and just hearing about your choices from ME3.

A past which exists as a few lines in the Codex has enormous potential. I'm not saying do games about Shepard's tragic childhood, am I? They can deviate from the original cast entirely. Do some original stuff, might work in any number of ways.

Hopefully not, but sadly enough it's already been confirmed that ME3 isn't the end of the franchise:

My guesses:
Mass Effect MMO by BioWare Austin in 5-10 years
Mass Effect FPS by DICE in 3-5 years
Mass Effect RPG spin-off by Obsidian
The Sims: Tali'Zorah by EA's The Sims Studio

Are hoping they don't make any kind sequels in the ME universe?

Also do you have a link to your idea on ME3 should end it was on a Post about not wanting to be rushed?

I seem to recall hearing that ME3 will be the end of Shepard's story arc, but that it was not the end of the ME franchise. Kaiser, you have a link to where that was confirmed?

I hope they won't make MMO. Rather something bit smaller with co-op functionality.

I doubt MMO. EA doesn't need two very similar properties.

Although I doubt it would happen, I think an ME RTS or some kind of strategy game with story-driven RPG elements would be great fun. Or a real space combat sim! Having EA as a parent does provide opportunities.

But probably just a new series of action RPGs.

There was this one comment by Casey once that a MMO would make sense for Mass Effect, but he was only thinking out loud there. The chances of there being a ME MMO any time soon are rather slim with the Old Republic on the horizon and the generally long development time MMOs have.

Agreeing with the OP, anything set after ME3 will probably be difficult to create without establishing a canon. Anything set before the first contact war will be basically human-less, which is incredibly rare for games of this type (and has problems of it own, we usually need something relatable in the game to make a little more sense of it), or have very little to do with ME if set on say, earth. Establishing a canon would be regrettable, but acceptable if necessary due to the high potential of the universe.

I suppose one option would make future games take place in alternative futures like "We're not saying this is what happened, but IF Shepard eradicated all the Rachni and sacrificed earth + Palaven to stop the reapers, this is what would've happened 400 years later". Would get confusing and weird after a couple of titles though.

Merchandise. I don't think we'll see more games in the ME universe for quite some time after ME3. Especially when it once again fails to capture the COD audience, for lack of multiplayer option and a lengthy, narrative-focused single player campaign.

Both ME1 and ME2 did good business with the 'COD audience'. I think it's safe bet ME3 will do fine, too, enough to prove that the franchise has some potential. And I don't see merchandise being a smart turn without the games to back it up.

That is rather unlikely for several reasons. ME has been very successful, earned several GOTY awards and earned EA quite some cash. With te money they spent building the franchise it is unlikely they will drop it just like that. Of course it'll take some time until the next one though. Probably until the next console generation. Saving te galaxy from the reapers is kinda hard to follow up on with anything so things would have to cool down before a new Mass Effect...
Maybe Dice could make a new ME in the meantime... (a new Mirror's Edge that is)

I am indeed hoping hoping that the entire series will come to an end with ME3, perhaps minus another novel and/or comic. My main reason for this being that ME3 should be able to end in such a variety of ways that a single, unified sequel would be impossible.

And yes, I believe have had a two or so topics on how ME3 should end and how I think it would end.

No confirmation as you would probably want it, but the way they're wording things and 'avoiding' answering certain questions should tell you enough if you've been following this industry long enough. Stuff like "end of Shepard's story" seemed to predict that this would indeed be the case, but the way Casey gives his answers should be enough for anyone with a bit of knowledge of the 'biz'. Same goes for how he dances around the multiplayer question; it's more than enough (for now) for everyone who takes the Word of God as final, but we should know better.

An MMO won't happen, for anyone wondering about that: No way in hell will Bio/EA let their MMOs cannibalize each other. And in the scenario that TOR doesn't succeed, an ME MMO would be even less viable.

Hopefully a FPS developed by DICE.

Honestly, I'd like them to do another trilogy of single player RPG's with another huge storyline. Then drop the nearly inevitable MMO. I don't see them handing the IP off to another studio though. I think that's pretty much crazy talk.

After ME3 they should release another comic and novel and MAYBE a prequel(this is a big maybe) and after that well work on a new IP

It's just one galaxy in a universe full of more than trillions of them. I'd kinda like to see how organic life develops in other areas of the universe and what issues they might face.

Doubt it would happen but an interesting concept.

I expect a TPS in the next few years.
