Yeah, because surgical scars often appear as darkly-pigmented, geometric patterns. Better explanation: he got more tattoos. Or they just decided he always had them. Wouldn't be the first time they've tweaked an appearance from what it was in the books: see the exo-suitless volus in Revelation.

I'm actually thinking Kai Leng will be after TIM instead of Shepard, since he might object against TIM's sudden desire to bow before alien overlords - even if it means the "salvation" and "ascension" of their species.
