They look nothing alike. The only thing that's similar is the backpack.

Stated by a developer years ago? Well, no offense, until I get some links or so, I won't believe it.

I usually keep Ash alive in my playthroughs. Kaidan I really don't care for but Ash always made me wary. I'm never sure what exactly she'll do or where her ambition to restore her family's honor may take her. She's always kept me interested in how she'll affect the story. I look forward to how she'll fare with the large unification and the galactic war going on.

I just had an interesting conversation with Ashley In-Game. She said herself it's not a race thing with her, but per se "If a bear is attacking you, and the only way out is to sick your dog at it and run, no matter how much you love the dog, it's the only way." She can be a snob, but i've yet to meet a girl who isn't. I know it's kind of a sad story to think about, but it's kinda true. Ash is a good person, shes just a woman.

Why are the Ashley haters/Kaidan fanboys so much more outspoken than the Kaidan haters/Ashley fanboys?

Because theres nothing to say about Kaidan. Hes boring? He doesn't have much to complain about. My intention of the thread was to discuss Ashley, but things seem to have gotten a bit out of hand.

why must one be a fanboy of one and hater of the other.  most of us like both characters, but prefer one over the other.  its not hate, its preference.

Kaidan haters can be just as vocal.  if i could have a nickel for every "whiny, boring, Carth clone, preachy, was happy to have a chance to burn him on virmire, etc etc" - I'd be set for life without ever having to work again

most haters here are just haters, period.

I understand, it just seems these always turn into "Ashley is a mean racist who deserves to be Virmired" sort of thing. Regardless of her attitude in ME2's poorly dialogued meeting, I really like her character. She's a hardass, no BS marine when she needs to be, and friendly other times.

Ashley's Writer wrote...
I find it interesting that so many people have stereotyped her as "the
racist." At a couple of points she blasts the Terra Firma party as being
"bigots," and she openly admires the power of the Destiny Ascension in
the Citadel approach cutscene - not quite what you'd expect from a
xenophobe.

In her first conversation she spells out her thinking pretty explicitly
(the bear and dog metaphor), and it's nothing more than a short
paraphrase of the most memorable passage in Charles Pelligrino and George Zebrowski's novel "The Killing Star":

When we put our heads together and tried to list
everything we could say with certainty about other civilizations,
without having actually met them, all that we knew boiled down to three
simple laws of alien behavior:

1. THEIR SURVIVAL WILL BE MORE IMPORTANT THAN OUR SURVIVAL.

If an alien species has to choose between them and us, they won't choose
us. It is difficult to imagine a contrary case; species don't survive
by being self-sacrificing.

2. WIMPS DON'T BECOME TOP DOGS.

No species makes it to the top by being passive. The species in charge
of any given planet will be highly intelligent, alert, aggressive, and
ruthless when necessary.

3. THEY WILL ASSUME THAT THE FIRST TWO LAWS APPLY TO US.

And it's hard to dispute this. At the least, you could say the krogan
live by these rules. It's certainly a more suspicious and pessimistic
point of view than most of us are comfortable with. But is it racism, or realism?

Anyway. I fully expected some people write her off as a bigot. What
surprises me is that no one's pointed out that her position does have
some sense. Evidently, I did something very wrong here.

To answer a question from... I don't know, tens of pages ago, if you romance her and have persuade, you can convince her to be a bit less extreme in her opinions.

Fascinating. That's how I took the infamous Bear and Dog Metaphor, and how I always saw Ashley. A pragmatist, not a racist. She's Miss "Look out for Number One, because no one else will." Cynicism=/=racism. It's Pressley who was the closet racist, but even he got over it.

Poor Chris.

Ashley does have good qualities. She's loyal and practical enough to realize the need to work with people you're not fond of. She's fiercely protective of those she cares about and is flexible enough to consider a different perspective.
I still think she carries an unfair bias against aliens in general, but then, as PhatSeeJay stated, the fact she's not with Cerberus is telling.
A bit b&itchy at times, but it never feels right letting her die on Virmire. Especially towards her family

I was pro Ashley in ME1, but became irritated with her after ME2. So I guess that makes me an Ashley "hater" by default. To answer your question, no you are not alone. It would seem that there is little middle ground regarding Williams. You either love her or hate her, but few are apathetic towards her.

I like Ashley, she's great, admittedly the scene in ME2 was rather bad, but she regretted it, and I'm sure she will be much nicer in ME3. I'm definitely looking forward to having the new and improved Ash back on the team!

I've always liked Ashley. Her distrust of aliens isn't really important, since she doesn't let it effect her behavior. Some examples are Virmire and her vocal disapproval of the terra firma party's bigotry. Some Ashley haters make her sound like a despicable xenophobe that kicks aliens in the shins and steals their babies. This is not the case.

Are you kidding me? Gah, I made a post hours ago, but for whatever reason it isn't there. I wasn't so sure what to think of Ashley, and i'm sick of the assumptions I hate her. The only people in the entire Mass Effect series I hate are Udina and Jacob. If I could I delete this topic and start fresh, I would, and hopefull the role would play out as intended, but I forgot that one bad word sets people off, whom sets another off, ect ect.... as I played through Mass Effect today getting to know Ashley a lot more. She is in no way a racist, and she has a great personallity I can relate too. I can put her nationalism and religious obsession aside, because you can't make friends if you can't get past small flaws. As someone stated before, shes a nationalist. She just ranted on a preacher who is racist, and called him out on that fact. I like Ashley, my assumptions of her were bad because when you don't get to know her, she appears as a b**** on the outside. Especially Mass Effect 2. Most the information I got from her was from other people. I apologize for this thread everybody. I will try not to make such a mistake in the future. And I can only hope they don't cause rants like what happened in this one. Will I stay loyal to her? ....Probably not.... But if she opens up in Mass Effect 3 I might get back with her.

Ashley distrusted aliens because of what happened to her family after the First Contact War. It was only around 25 years ago and so is still fresh in many peoples minds.

Also remember sentient machines created by another alien race had just slaughtered her entire unit and killed alot of civilians. How quickly we forget the horror of the Husks.

People forget she was able to work through her distrust with some gentle guidance.

Another thread where the Ashley haters can scream their rage to the heavens about the bugged "aliens look like animals" comment, the bear and dog analogy that they misinterpreted, or the fact that Ashley actually dares to mistrust Shep in ME 2 after he turns up with a pro human extremist/terrorist group after he was KIA.

Exactly what we needed.

Ashley's human, human's make mistakes and are afraid of what they don't understand.

To me, her hate for aliens is justified. For someone raised to think a certain way, alien life would certainly instill more fear than the average person.

I've never had second thoughts, I love Ashley and wanted her to be pursuable by my female Shepard from the get go and thought she should look something more like what she does now in Mass Effect 3 from what Bioware first said about her and how she was supposed to be really beautiful.  My bigges problem though were her eyes, they were freakishly huge in the first two games, I'm glad now they are a more reasonable size.

She's not so much racist as mistrustful of other species, in the same way one would be of agents from other countries that yours has a tentative alliance with.

It's easily misunderstood, as Mass effect blurs the line between racism and nationalism - every species is effectively a nation, and putting the human systems alliance first and not explicitly trusting the others, is then not racist, a bit paranoid maybe, but not racist.

On the citadel Ashley tells the xenophobic political candidate guy to stfu and she refuses to work with shep on Horizon because of shep's assosiation cerberus.
