Am I the only one having second thoughts about Ashley?

Another thread where the Ashley haters can scream their rage to the heavens about the bugged "aliens look like animals" comment, the bear and dog analogy that they misinterpreted, or the fact that Ashley actually dares to mistrust Shep in ME 2 after he turns up with a pro human extremist/terrorist group after he was KIA.

Exactly what we needed.

I agree with this. God these threads get tiresome.

Anyway OT:
Ashley is awesome and I never needed second thoughts about her at any point in Mass Effect. Only girl in the galaxy for me.

Ashley's Writer wrote...
I find it interesting that so many people have stereotyped her as "the
racist." At a couple of points she blasts the Terra Firma party as being
"bigots," and she openly admires the power of the Destiny Ascension in
the Citadel approach cutscene - not quite what you'd expect from a
xenophobe.

In her first conversation she spells out her thinking pretty explicitly
(the bear and dog metaphor), and it's nothing more than a short
paraphrase of the most memorable passage in Charles Pelligrino and George Zebrowski's novel "The Killing Star":

When we put our heads together and tried to list
everything we could say with certainty about other civilizations,
without having actually met them, all that we knew boiled down to three
simple laws of alien behavior:

1. THEIR SURVIVAL WILL BE MORE IMPORTANT THAN OUR SURVIVAL.

If an alien species has to choose between them and us, they won't choose
us. It is difficult to imagine a contrary case; species don't survive
by being self-sacrificing.

2. WIMPS DON'T BECOME TOP DOGS.

No species makes it to the top by being passive. The species in charge
of any given planet will be highly intelligent, alert, aggressive, and
ruthless when necessary.

3. THEY WILL ASSUME THAT THE FIRST TWO LAWS APPLY TO US.

And it's hard to dispute this. At the least, you could say the krogan
live by these rules. It's certainly a more suspicious and pessimistic
point of view than most of us are comfortable with. But is it racism, or realism?

Anyway. I fully expected some people write her off as a bigot. What
surprises me is that no one's pointed out that her position does have
some sense. Evidently, I did something very wrong here.

To answer a question from... I don't know, tens of pages ago, if you romance her and have persuade, you can convince her to be a bit less extreme in her opinions.

Fascinating. That's how I took the infamous Bear and Dog Metaphor, and how I always saw Ashley. A pragmatist, not a racist. She's Miss "Look out for Number One, because no one else will." Cynicism=/=racism. It's Pressley who was the closet racist, but even he got over it.

Poor Chris.

^that always comes to mind when I see the hate Ash gets.

Eh, Ashley isn't for everyone. She's opinionated and blunt and openly disagrees with Shepard on things. She's also the most vocal and outspoken person in Mass Effect AGAINST racism so I'm still not sure how people are getting that. She MENTIONS believing in God though she doesn't say what her actual religion is, yet she's a "Bible beater."

She's also incredibly flawed. Like any real person there are things to like and things to dislike. It's why I feel like she's one of the best written characters in the franchise.

All the chars have had one before and each character has it people that dislike or hate them the only one i haven't seen is Garrus.

Um, hello there? :P
I'm just trying to keep my dislike to certain characters as own opinion no one is really interested in.

Poor Ashley suffers from two things, as for me: first, she's soldier class and I prefer casters; and second, even when Kaidan is not a LI on playthrough, I always save higher ranked officer. That's sad, she's nice character.

And maybe it's just me but Jacob's caution towards assassin and activating geth look like direct continuation of Ashley's caution towards non-Alliance personnel.

Ash is one of the most complex character in the game, the writer should take the fact that not everyone likes her as a good thing. It is easy to make a generic character that everyone loves, much hard to craft a character that everyone will form an equally valid opinion about.

I am having second thoughts in the sense that I'd rather be Ashley than Shepard.

I view both VS as expendable, but I always save Ash due to the fact that also saves the STG.
