Because Jowy Atreides was the most idiotic character in RPG history, with his betrayal being hall-of-fame caliber stupid.
He thought he had to do it. He never thought Riou and the others had a chance to make a difference, they were a little ragtag band of kids going up against an entire kingdom. If he allied with Highland, he could weasel his way up the ranks and overthrow the kingdom... which is what he did.
I get the Nanami thing, though.
Uh, the betrayal I was talking about was the one where he tried to assassinate his best friend (Riou) AFTER the overthrow of Luca. Which had the opposite effect of his goal, which was bringing peace through political unity. Which, with Luca deposed, was quite possible. But nope, instead he blew it and prolonged the war. Complete stupidity.

Jowy and Riou are forced to fight each other due to Black Sword/Bright Shield. It's not what Jowy wants to do, it's the "will" of the rune. Same with Han and Genkaku before them.

Still stupid. And poor storytelling, if nothing else.
Mass Effect 3 was the worst.
But I have been spared, apparently in a litany of playing even worse.
Still, I think it wins for major titles so far within the past decade.
Some say it is Fable III, but I would still rate that as second worst.
The good news is that Dragon Age:Origins and Mass Effect 1 still rate as the best for me. Skyrim, so far, hasn't unseated either. Late as it is that I am playing it.
