It doesn't really bother me because if someone else kills it, it's their XP... I can see why it might irk some though, since most monsters don't respawn and there is a finite amount of XP to achieve. However, I would hardly characterize it as happening "constantly".

I do agree that not getting XP when enemies kill each other for Waking Nightmare is a bad call, though. I cast that spell, they're dying cause of me, but I get no XP. Oh well.

If it really really bothers you, create a second Custom tactics set for each character that is the same as their normal tactics but for everybody put an  Enemy Health < 10% - Attack/Bigass Special Move in the top slot across the board. That way, if you get into a fight with a lot of non-party Helpers, take a moment to switch everyone's tactics and when enemies get near death your party should be in place to deliver the final blow and thusly earn some XP.

It's amazing how many people don't even get it. I suppose the comment about Alistair strains some people's puny intellects too much to understand that the complaint isn't about party members getting the last hit in, but non-party NPC's, like other 'friendly' NPC's or enemies using AOE's and killing themselves or each other, thus resulting in no exp gain by the party.

Let me say it one more time for those that still refuse to read...

I AM NOT TALKING ABOUT YOUR OWN PARTY MEMBERS KILLING STUFF -- I KNOW THAT XP IS EQUALLY SHARED ACROSS YOUR PARTY!!!

I'm talking about non-party NPC's (ie, like the knights at Redcliff, or enemy units that kills themselves with AOE spells),  YOU LOSE THAT XP.

Over the course of a game, it can add up depending on your strategy.  Other RPG's give you this XP.  DA doesn't.  As others have mentioned, some spells even trick the enemy into killing themselves.  You don't get that XP!

ps.  amusing that I'm more pissed about how stupid (or asinine) posters are than I am about the actual issue I posted about

Well there are those of us who do understand... you might want to check out the workaround I noted in my post at the top of this page. It's not perfect but it should cut down on the amount of xp you lose in these situations.

My advice though is that when a room full of mages kill themselves(i know exactly which part of the Fade you mean), just praise the Maker and keep moving :D

Yeah, there's actually 2 places, and I think at least some of them are called "crazy mages" or something like that -- so makes me think their reckless friendly-fire is almost intentional LOL!

BTW,  the original mention I made about Allister stealing my kill-mana was because:
1.  I was playing as a 2-H and they swing so damn slow
2.  he would neglect his "assigned target" to kill mine, thus allowing the party to be at risk

Try as I might with the tactics screen, it was so hard to keep him on his assigned target

Well I guess when you get a game as good as DA you gotta find SOMETHING to complain about...

He's saying non party npcs.

Like in the mages tower if you fight anyone by the npc mages, they will join in.

Or if the mage kills themselves with a fireball (That really needs to be fixed as a stupid AI issue rather than an xp one. I mean what kind of mage casts a fireball on himself?). He doesnt get the xp.

Honestly, this is abit of an oversight, but not worth complaining about on the forums. So what if you didn't hit level 23? As far as you know, your games over. You have nothing left to do, and therefore don't need to be level 23. The achievements only require level 20 in each class.

You know, my current play-through (archer), I've actually made RP choices because of this?

For example, I killed Dweyn (sp) the mercenary Dwarf in Redcliff, instead of enlisting (paying for) his help cause I didn't want to risk him taking XP up on the hill (which he and his thugs did a lot of the play-through before)

This was compleatly un-called for.

What gives you the right to talk to anyone like this. No one here has attacked you personally, no one has told you how stupid or asinine your post is - so wtf?

Talk about reveling yourself - holy crap.

Feel free to look in the toolset into the sys_rewards_h.nss script to confirm that indeed all XP is shared with the party. There is no such thing as 'XP stealing' from allies.

The XP you see over the character doing the killing blow is the XP awarded to every party member in the game.

You're misunderstanding the OP Georg! He's talking about Neutrals stealing kills, not party members (for example, the battles where you rescue your recruited allies for your war effort)

The guy who started this thread is writing like a baby who had his bottle taken away, but he's still right that it's a weird and irritating problem, mainly because it doesn't just happen in the few battles you fight with NPC allies, but also any time an enemy kills something with friendly fire. Which with the way the AI likes to throw fireballs and the like, is actually a lot.

It's not the worst thing in the world though, because you advance through levels just fine, and this isn't a game whee you grind for experience. It's just an oversight, and annoying when you are thinking "oh crap I hope that guy doesn't get the killing blow on that orange-name monster".

If you don't like NPCs stealing your Exp, go hit each NPC once. They will stop kiling each other and kill you instead.

Yeah, it is annoying, but the OP is certainly whining, too. This thread did not merit a dev response. LOL

Way to completely miss the entire thread discussion, he's talking about friendly NPC's like the Redcliffe Militia, or when two groups of enemy NPC's fight

It also seems to happen with charmed enemies killing or getting killed. I still like waking nightmare for the hilarious chaos it causes, but using it a lot would just mean gimping your XP apparently.

Hah, even the bioware guy is an idiot.

In regards to the problem, the biggest complaint in my opinion is that it disproportionately affects player strategies (not to mention im pretty sure this is never addressed anywhere in documentation).

It would at least be acceptable if there was a loading screen hint for "Be careful waking nightmare can cause enemies to deny you their exp." But I guess this game is just really 50% rpg, 50% SCIENCE.

Not really.  While the OP might have been talking about non-party friendlies killing enemies, or even enemies killing each other, a lot of other posters in this thread kept referring to one of their party members whoring all of the XP by getting the killing blows.  Georg was likely responding to those posters.

Yes he was responding to all the other morons who already agreed with him by providing evidence to the argument no one cares about. That is perfectly likely.

No, that is stupid. The most generous case is that he skimmed through the first post and for whatever reason only read the dumb posts and assumed they knew what they were talking about.

To Georg's point... aren't all friendly NPC's considered 'allies'?

What are you talking about?  There are at least three posts in this topic (likely more, I'm not going to count them) that mention "<Party Member X> always gets the XP for killing blows."  Georg isn't agreeing or disagreeing with anyone; he's just correcting those posters.

Also, stop being such a jackass.

To be honest, I haven't looked at the scripts; steam and no desire to screw around with the installer just to look at something that wouldn't be hard to provide without it.

But since he specifically references xp numbers appearing which does not happen in the case this thread is actually about I would consider it safe to assume he is offtopic.

Edit to avoid double post: If you could point out the three posts where people think that the party member who kills the creature gets all the exp that would really help.

Also, those posts don't exist. Moron.

It's bad enough Allister swoops in to steal the last kill hit (thus mana suck) from every enemy I've worked down, but at least there, you still get the XP for the overall kill.

But this crap of NPC's killing (usually with a puny shot to barely finish off) enemy units... AND NO XP IS GRANTED!!!

Just playing through the Fade/Magi Tower (4th play-through, Rogue Archer, ugh), and just had 4 mages KILL THEMSELVES and I got no XP!  Keep reloading and trying to get all the kills myself, but the idiots keep blasting each other with fireballs... AND I GET NO XP FOR IT!  ARGHHH!

My 2nd character was only 300pts from lvl 23...  I could've made it were it not for this crap!

I'm with ya, bro.  Anyone who K/S me get sent to the bench for a chapter or two...
