This is very likely making a mountain out of a mole hill, but ...

You may remember the story of Dane and the Werewolf from Origins. In the legends, Dane was a hunter who ran with the wolves and slew a high dragon. Two of his swords — Yusaris and the Winter Blade — can be found in Origins and Awakening; the latter has the Brothers of Stone specifically mention Dane, though the Brother of War is uncertain if he is the same Dane of Fereldan legend.

While wandering around the Black Emporium, one of Xenon's ambient dialogues contains this line:

"Some Dane fellow asked, 'Why make a shop so hard to find?' I mean, really! He just has no concept!"

Now, he could be referencing an entirely different individual named Dane. Or if he's not, Xenon isn't the most reliable source of information. However, if Xenon's backstory is correct, he struck his bad bargain for immortality only three hundred years ago, not 1,000 years ago. There's no way for him to have met Dane unless Dane was still alive at least seven centuries later.

How could this be possible? Well, Dane was a werewolf, and it's possible he was the first of his kind. As a supernatural being, it's feasible that he could simply be immortal and is bootin' it around Thedas. I mean, the Lady of the Forest was apparently immortal.

Wouldn't that be cool? Maybe we'll hear more out of our wandering werewolf someday.

Interesting. Dane was alive in the Black Age, while Xenon was alive in the Steel Age.

And while I don't doubt Xenon dealt with a Dane character, the codex on him has the author believing Xenon's mind has deteriorated along with his body. So it's very iffy.

All the great heroes of Thedas has disappeared. Dane, Black Fox, The Hero of Ferelden, and Hawke, have all disappeared. It probably isn't a coincidence.

The Black Fox is most likely dead, as the codex on his jerkin says he parted with it in a less than voluntary manner.

The disappearances of the Warden and Hawke are probably related, however ...

It just seems odd that we keep running into references to a Dane, if not the Dane. In Ferelden, it was somewhat expected, but now in Kirkwall?

I've lost more than a few jackets involuntarily, and I'm alive... I think a master thief can do even better.

He killed a bunch of blood mages, abominations, demons, undead, dwarves, widows, criminals, innocents, and virgins. That qualifies as a hero in my book...

Qualifies as a good killer in mine.

Hero's actually, you know, save things or people.

According to legend, his adventures do end in the Dales. Exactly who or what brought him down, however, is unclear.

Nah... Kill one man, and you are a murderer. Kill ten men, and you are a beast. Kill a hundred men, and you are a hero.

Let's not de-rail the thread with bickering over Hawke's accomplishments, shall we? There are other places for that.

He's the Champion of Kirkwall, they don't just hand out that title willy-nilly.

Hitler killed millions of men. What does that make him?

Sure seemed it.  Champions don't get to do much, either.

True.  My apologies.

So, Dane.  How long do werewolves live, anyway?

The reason they all disappear is simple. Flemeth has decided to play Nick Fury and is gathering up all the badasses who can get crap done and building a Justice League knockoff.

Dane
The Black Fox
Maric (Lost at sea, body never found)
Duncan (Confirmed dead, but body missing and who knows what kind of freaky powers Flemeth hasn't shown yet)
The Warden (Even if the sacrifice was made)
Hawke
DAIII Hero

Good question. It's sort of suggested during the Nature of the Beast quest that the humans who Zathrian cursed with lycanthropy had died out long ago, and the werewolves that attacked the Dalish were their descendants. So a normal werewolf probably doesn't live forever.

But the story of Dane and the Werewolf suggests that Dane and a wolf literally traded places for a while, so it wasn't your usual "man gets bitten, man turns into lycanthrope" set-up. And even as a wolf, Dane hunted dragons. He then took off from Ferelden.

Fenris  calls into question a portion of his myth: that mabari were descended from wolves. According to Fenris, they 'defected' from Tevinter.

Doesn't mean they're not still descended from wolves.

Like many "legends", my feeling is that Dane's is a bit exagerated.  But . . . I'm not firm on that.  This IS Thedas, after all.

Well in a way a lot of Thedas defectled from Tevinter. They had pretty much the whole continent conquered at one point.

Oooh, I would so love to meet the Black Fox - his stuff is really nice and he sounds fun.

I imagine he looks like Errol Flynn.... ;)

Knight-Vigilant.

But seriously now, as for all the disappearing heroes, I'm not sure it means anything. Maric's disappearance which we all thought was going to lead somewhere just turned out to be that they forgot to write a codex. Don't get me wrong, there's a very good chance it does lead somewhere, but it might just be that recordkeeping sucks in Thedas.

Hitler didn't kill anyone himself. But I can guarentee you, that if Germany had won the war, Hitler would be viewed as a great hero.
But how do you think the soldiers, on either side, which had killed a hundred men, were viewed by their comrades?
