He would have had that knowledge from his military training and/or witnessing his squad leaders in action when he served in the STG.

Garrus really is the best option to lead the fire team. Seems he is the desired choice by Bioware.
There is really no "best" option. There are just people who succeed, and people who fail. Whether he's the one to assign depends on what class you're playing and what kind of capabilities you want on your squad. Personally, loyal Jacob seems to be the "best" to me because he's not really a great damage dealer or sponge, and his powers aren't that great. Miranda and Garrus both have more utility as active squadmembers.

I should have specified better. Miranda causes issues with Jack, Jacob causes issues with Miranda, etc. Garrus on the other hand causes issues with nobody and yet survives the job. Thus I meant he seems the best choice for no potential other deaths.

On my first run-through I lost Grunt as the fire team 2 leader because, hey, a krogan, a species with a reputation for being extraordinarily hard to kill won't die from a single gunshot wound to the chest right? Especially not when they have the power to give themselves super-shielding, right? And because I thought Jacob would be completely useless and die for no reason I sent him back to escort my crew to the Normandy. And sure he accomplished that, but I failed to realize that Mordin was unfit to hold the line (which in retrospect I should have realized considering the talk about Captain Kirrahe).
Also, Kaiser Shepard and Saphra Deden, I am mildly surprised to find people other than me who spend hours figuring out what all the conversation wheel abbreviations actually say and trying to create a perfect role playing experience with Shepard.
I always send Jacob back, and Mordin never dies holding the line if Garrus is leading.

First run-through, I lost Thane in the vents. I thought (in my defense, it was 3 AM), "the dude was introduced dropping out of a vent after getting past all the security; also, there might be baddies guarding it and those invisible ninja moves and combat skills (as opposed to a pure tech character) might come in handy."
*Eight minutes later* "Oops. Sorry, lizard man."
I did the same thing, because they also mention the heat and Thane likes arid hot rooms and crap. I think the game plays a very gotcha moment.

It makes a point of telling you that you need someone with really good hacking skills. Thane is not in that category, regardless of how awesome he is at crawling around. He doesn't have a single tech-oriented power to his name.

This is such a gray area (with Thane that is). Yes you need a tech expert and yes they specify it, but I can certainly see why people would think Thane would work as he is an expert of breaking into places of course.
I always used Tali for this (Legion on one play through - he works too). Other than those two, I cant really think of any other I have heard of that actually can pull off the tubes.

I lost Mordin though on my first playthrough with my imported Femshep. Mainly cause I took 2 heavyhitters (Zaeed and Grunt) with me to face off with the Human Reaper. Didn't know about the Hold the Line requirement at the time. After that I took Mordin with me, and found out what a godsend he is against Collectors.

Very first playthrough with my imported John Shepard I didn't lose anyone on the Suicide mission, and that was something I was really proud of. Also on my first runthrough I romanced Miranda, but subsequent playthroughs I've stayed loyal to Liara.

Mordin is highly underrated by many as a squadmate. Heavy Incinerate is such a great skill to have in group (if your Shep doesnt have).

Other things? No Zaeed/Kasumi, several failed quests (didn't take reporter's on Samara's LM, for example), ideal not spoiled SM (Miranda was FTL both times, Legion was tech expert, Jack was botic expert, Jacob got the crew back to Normandy).

I ended up loosing the whole crew though since I was so late to the collector base after all my cruising around, and because I didn't want to spare anybody to protect Chakwas (priorities, etc.). I did save my entire team though.

I did rescue Chakwas and the crew though!
I keep a screengrab of Shepard sulking at their coffins for laughs.

I didn't have enough paragon points so I sided with Miranda. I did all of the ship upgrades because that made sense to me, but I didn't realize my crew would start being killed if I did another mission so part of the crew died. I believe this was my Shepard who had bad luck with love. ME1 Kaidan died and ME2 she really started likeing Thane and he died along with Jack.
I actually like the SM quite a bit. Depending on how I play I can save everyone, which I've done at least once, or I can play a more realistic (to me) game and since I don't check the cheat sheet I'm never sure who will be with me at the end.

Actually, that's not true. But my laptop crapped out before I got halfway through it. And by the time the GameInformer issue came out, I already had bought all the ship upgrades so that wasn't going to be a problem.
But I don't believe I would have had problems: I like to get every upgrade and naturally I got all the ship upgrades as soon as they became available, I would have did trial and error til everybody survived the suicide mission anyway.
In a way I did go back, i was already halfway through and wanted to see the ending, but because I didn't have any other saves to reference, it went smoothly for what I wanted to accomplish.
