How effective are the Chemical/Polonium rounds?

They're good, I just prefer Inferno rounds because I feel more powerful and badass launching at fire at enemies rather then launching green goo.

Inferno....as I really dislike micro managing...I found Inferno seemed to be the best all rounder.

Toxic effects in ammo is only useful on Insanity when drilling Krogan during their regen phase.
There's also some regen on the holograms in Pinnacle Station (Ahern's Scenario has regen on the turians) that the toxic counters.
But otherwise, don't bother with it.

For maximized damage, you want Tungsten/Shredder VII, but you have to switch for the situation.
For the best all-situations damage, use Inferno.

Sledgehammer rounds are great on a Master Marksman pistol, so you have crowd control on the higher difficulties, saving those biotic attacks, and neural shock / damping for later when you really need them.

Explosive rounds are amazing on a shotgun. Doesn't matter if you're not trained.
Just make sure to drop the shields on your target and you can send them flying.
It's best on an Engineer or Infiltrator.

A lot of people slap explosives on snipers, too, but unless you drop the shields, it's just a waste of overheat for a 1/4 damage boost.
On the other hand, if you're untrained with a sniper you can put explosive rounds on to give your shots a radius to counter the inaccuracy, though.

For damage, the best is tungsten/shredder VII vs. the correct target type. Any kind will work, I generally stay away from proton, shield piercing and snowblind. You give up to much for the bonuses that you get. I like to use hammer head/sledge hammer rounds in shotguns though. I find explosive to be at most situationally useful. I'm actually kind of fond of cryo rounds. Not so much because of the shield bypass, but because of the accuracy reduction. They also keep downed krogan from getting back up.

I usually go with ammo that drains the enemy's life for a few seconds like Inferno. When I'm using a sniper rifle I go for the explosive rounds (don't know what they're called).

Inferno and hammerhead are the two I used the most. Explosive rounds are cool if you like one shot kills and abusing the enemy. Corpse abuse I think is the legal term. :-) Proton rounds are very effective against the Geth in the earlier levels.

I will echo everyone's thoughts and sentiments on the inferno rounds...especially compared to highest level toxic rounds you get...
For my sniper rifle users... I would go with the High Explosive rounds...yeah, you will overheat after 1 or 2 shots but it's effectively an insta-kill shot...
For shotgun...the sledgehammer n hammerhead rounds are best.

The ones I stay away from are the phasic n proton rounds...never really saw there point...the cryo n eventually snowblind rounds may work best on pistols...

Snowblind is horrible in a pistol or an assault rifle. You'll end up doing less dps than with a bare pistol. The rate of fire penalty is a killer.

Oh and HE is fine in a sniper on lower difficulties, but I'd stay away from it on harcore/insanity.  It will often take two or three hits even using assassination.  What it's useful for is it's area of effect, you can sometimes even effect enemies behind cover with it.

Inferno for me. I agree with what has been said about tungsten/shredder, but I don't like going into and out of menu screens to switch for the appropriate situation.

Tungsten VII (Geth), Shredder VII (organics), Polonium VII (krogan).

Inferno X is a good all-around ammo. Plus can kill people you aren't shooting at anymore.

does anyone here think sledgehammer rounds take off more health then the other ammo mods?

for the longest time i loaded up sledghammer in my pistol because it seemed like it performed the best. not including shredder/tungston ofcors.

No I don't believe that, sledgehammer does have the whole extra crowd control thing going though.
