Just noticed. That makes him look even more sexy for women and... um... gay men.
Though, I doubt it's customizable. I think it has to do with the overall increased emergency and lack of time.

Shep has tmie to wander all around his ship, asknig crew is they need a bottle of brandy, or rations, or t-16 thingymabobs, but doesnt have 5 minutes to spare in front of a mirror with a razor. 

Edit: As compared to Ash, who seems to have all the time in the world to spend with all the hair products and devices she needs to get that silky smooth hair to flow just perfectly.

This coupled with the Assassination Thread makes me hope that Sheploo gets surprise attacked in the middle of shaving. Then he has to fight half-shaven. With shaving cream still on his face.

And then when he shouts his battle cries the shaving cream would fly off, get stuck on the assassin's visor, and give Sheploo the split second surprise he needed to land a killing blow.

We need real beards in Mass Effect. Stubble can do in a pinch, but we need the thick, fluffy, dorfy stuff.

I hope I'll have the option to leave the beard in place. This kind of Shepard is closer to me. Cause I hate having smooth skin on my face.
