Kind of curious is all. I mean sure they can be offensive, but people can figure out what word it is based on the context and we've seen these words in BW games anyways...

I say it's because it discourages the use of profanity. Instead of swearing, people take the time to use less colourful language that won't be displayed as ****. That's probably a good thing for maintaining civility on the fora.

That's a pretty good point.

Why do we have any censorship at all?
So easily offended pew pews can go on living their lives thinking nothing is wrong with it.

Now, I like me some cussing but, it could get boring seeing the f-bomb dropped every other word. Thus creative use of words is greatly appreciated.

I "curse" all the time but its probably because I'm an actual Marine and its natural. Anyways that's like asking why Marijuana is illegal and the answer to that is "It is alleged that one of the reasons marijuana is illegal today because cotton growers in the 1930's lobbied against hemp farmers, they saw it as competition". Basically no reason.

Wrong.

While we do have censorship for a variety of stupid reasons, we also have censorship because excessive swearing, sexuality, etc. is just that. Excessive.

Because BioWare/EA doesn't want it on their forums?

No need to over think it.

Agreed.

But on a side note I think it's funny when people get told to stop swearing when it's all ********'ed out anyways :D (Woo, if you read this I didn't really swear! I typed in the * :innocent:)

Excessive as determined by whom? "Excessive" is by its very nature subjective. Why should someone else's idea of it restrict my ability to communicate?

And why do you propose only these words be restricted in such a fashion? Why is an excess of swear-words worse than an excess of any other kind of word?

That's just avoiding the actual question by stating the obvious. Obviously it is censored because BioWare implemented a filter. The real question is why did they do that?

Which can be expanded into the general question: Why does anyone do it? Which in turn calls for a further question: Should anyone be allowed to control which words we can and cannot use?

Well cursing is usually bad when it is directed at someone i.e. saying "you are a ****ing ****".

But cursing that is not directed i.e. "**** I just beat baldurs gate for the first time" tends to be not so bad. (no malice)

Therefore they have to ban cursing full stop as it can and does get directed at people and comes across much worse than say "you are a moron", still offensive yes but not overly so.

Just my two pence.

Why do you think it is more offensive to call someone what ever it is that's hidden behind those asterisks than to call someone a moron? I, for one, have been called all manner of things and how offended I am has nothing to do with the words themselves, but rather with intent and context.

Ask yourself why you should use them . What do you gain by cursing? People that curse tend to focus a lot of energy unto those word. Like it's give them energy and power or worse ... control .

It's like a teenager driinking alcohol and  thinking he's a grown up . No . You're a kid drinking a beverage that require more self control and with which you can become addicted. Ask yourself why you're buying alcohol  . It is because you love the taste of it or because you want to be wasted during a party of you want to be 'COOL'  and accepted?

It's a matter of perspective and understanding .

Curse word .. You can live without it  and you should . So next time you hear the neighbor yelling bad words. Shake your head in disbelief.
