I'm pretty sure Oblivion's main story wins with no competition. I loved that game, just not the main story. I... liked the Fallout 3... main story... though.... *sits in corner*

Why does this thread needs to be about RPG stories and not game stories in general, this changes anything?

You're right. Changed topic to games in general.

@Hayllee: I can somewhat agree with Oblivion, it was pretty weak for the main quest. The saving grace (for the PC version) was modding and area exploration. You also won't get an argument from me on Fallout 3, though its story wasn't that riveting.

Are we talking just bad story or bad story told in an atrocious way? I'd have to go with "the Bouncer" for a terrible story and terrible storytelling. JRPG mixed with a fighting game in a rail-shooter-esqe format, it was horrible. It remains one of the few games I've never finished.

I'm way too cool to have played any games with bad stories.

Okay, for realsies though, I don't play many games. Worst story of the games I've played would probably be Oblivion. If they had focused more on the metaphysical implications of the breaking of the Covenant instead of just making a generic save-the-world fantasy, it could have been a lot better. The entire game was wasted potential. And it's still one of my favorite games ever :P

The Metal Gear Solid series.

(Incidentally, MGS is my favorite game series of all time. Hideo Kojima is a ****ing wizard with taking terrible ideas and making them amazing, seriously.)

Odd....I didn't think Fable III's story was too bad....

Anyway:

Arcania Gothic IV
Might & Magic X
Oblivion
Belief and Betrayal
Phantasmagoria

And I'm sure I forgot about a few.:P

Pong wasn't that bad... just "hit ball to win". At least it was never as sadistic as tetris.

Hmmm, not really sure. I certainly know which game story pisses me off the most because I was expecting something good. But I haven't thought about which would be the worst.

So um....Mario?

I'll also add FFXIII because they went for linear gameplay rather than continuing in the direction FFXII took with the franchise. They did so to have a more narrative-driven experience. Problem being, it lacked a compelling or coherent narrative. You had to resort to the codex to get most of the plot.

If we are talking just about the story only, well, I'd have to say Bayonetta. Oddly though, it is my fave action game of all time, for now.

Knights of the Old Republic 2 was just ok, but it had a really crappy light side ending.

I'd give my vote to Square Enix's The Bouncer, as one of the worst stories in a video game. It's short, and some of the dialogue is weird. There is a lot of characters randomly showing up during the game, and you never really do get to care about any of them. You're not really sure what is going, and I'm actually still a little confused about what exactly the game was about.

I actually think MGS4's problem there was going too far with trying to make the bull**** terrible ideas of the series make sense. Vamp was more entertaining when he was actually a nonsensical, unexplained immortal vampire who walks on water than Nanomachine Man. MGS's confusingly incomprehensible nonsense was part of the first games' charm, maaaaaaaaan, what were you guys thinking!

Hey you plagerized my opinions!

But yes. First rule of a narrative driven cinematic linear game: Have an actual narrative.

Interesting point. I agree - the biggest loss in MGS4 was its lack of tongue-in-cheek goofiness. The super-serious angle is what ended up making it less enjoyable than it could have been. Especially since he implicitly made Naomi the Remorseful Devil for making those Explain-All Nanomachines.

Any FF7 game that isn't the original. Those side story games sucked storyline wise.
