Really now? Sounds like BS to me. I don't recall any developers listening to my specific requests or making games I would like to see made. I guess I forgot how I automatically had everything easy in life because I'm "one of the majority", I'm going back to my swimming poll filled with money now.

They're already making games you like to see and are already doing everything in marketing to lure you in. You don't have to ask for anything. Hot chicks? Check! Strip clubs? Check! Bad ass man in the trailer? Check! Guns and explosions? Check!

Sweet cakes? Do try to show a bit of class, then again, that seems a lot fo expect with some aspects of the community.

Women playing games and watching movies! *gasp* So what's tbe big deal? It seems most of them aren't the hardcore feminist types who find sexism in everything they see. Transformers and Star Trek didn't need to do anything special to appeal to them just because they're women.

Ahhh and here're you are wrong. Movie studio spent millions researching how to appeal to as big demographic as possible. What's the most desirable audience ratio for blockbusters? As equal sex-wise as possible, because that means more money for the studio. Wondered why Nyota Uhura (played by Zoe Saldana) in the Star Trek reboot had more prominent & bad-ass role and was featured in the marketing as one of the leads unlike she was in eariler Start Trek movies/series? You know the answer. Movie ads printed in magazines aimed at different audiences will have subtle differences. There'll be varied trailers enhancing different parts of the movies aiming to lure in different audiences. Remember the movie The Expendables from last year? Macho bonanza aimed almost exclusively at male audience. Didn't do that hot at the box office, despite all the movie legends attatched and not bad reviews.

In regards to race, if that were true everything would aim at Asian markets. But this isn't the case and even if it were, developers tend to focus on either West or East. Over-the-top action-heavy titles like Gears of War are selling as well as ever despite the opinion of journalist rags like the Escapist which would bemoan the lack of diversity.

Gears of War games are dominating this gen don't forget. Last gen action adventure games dominated the industry. Next gen who knows? Ohh and since you've already brought Gears of War example, who do I see in GOW3? Is it me or is it a female Gear? Not over-sexualized one at that which kinda makes me doubt she's in there just for the eye-candy purpouse for the guys hmmm? If GOW is such a hot property, why do they need to bring female gears in it? Ain't it selling super-hot-enough just with its straight male audience like you've said?

I don't mind

it's all about the liberal messages and equality

What I don't like is the housewives and fanatics at the femshep thread always bashing sheploo and blah blah blah something about sexism and rights when nothing was really mentioned.

I've got a long, long list of titles I would like to see, yet haven't gotten. I've got a long long list of things I would like to see added to current franchises but I don't get that either. Do you seriously mean to imply they don't make games you like to see? If so, that's too bad for you and not my, nor anyone's problem.

If I didn't have class, I would be spending my time on BSN whining about minorities wanting to be treated equally as I already am. Rings a bell? ^_^

Saying it's about being "treated equally" doesn't make it so. Lets stop hiding our own wants behind such overused words.

Ahhh and here're you are wrong. Movie studio spent millions researching how to appeal to as big demographic as possible. What's the most desirable audience ratio for blockbusters? As equal sex-wise as possible, because that means more money for the studio.

How is that always desirable? If somebody's aiming to make a historically accurate war-movie why should having a 50-50 demographic matter? No. You make a good movie, market it well, and people interested will come.

Wondered why Nyota Uhura (played by Zoe Saldana) in the Star Trek reboot had more prominent & bad-ass role and was featured in the marketing as one of the leads unlike she was in eariler Start Trek movies/series?

Uhura and her original actor has always been rather important in Star Trek, she was clearly sexed-up and made more of a badass for the reboot, but do you really think that was done just to appeal to women? People expect more action, sex, etc.

Now that's marketting, as is all of this overinflated hype about FemShep being such a big deal. Being able to play as a woman in an RPG isn't new or revolutionary. Now I saw The Expendables and the biggest problem was not the cast, but a poor story and script. Lists of A-List actors won't save you from that.

Gears of War games are dominating this gen don't forget. Last gen action adventure games dominated the industry. Next gen who knows? Ohh and since you've already brought Gears of War example, who do I see in GOW3? Is it me or is it a female Gear? Next-gen? It's going to be similar but with more gimmicks and less value per dollar. The female Gear? You mean Anya Stroud? She's the same officer who was usually following Hoffman around and has a thing for Marcus. There was also another female Gear in the books. Marketing aside, she wasn't tossed to appeal to people who make a big deal about FemShep. You can look up the GoW sales figures for yourself. It's doing better than fine.

lmao Recon already at it with his skyscrapers. Ain't touching it with a 10 feet pole.

Let's sum it up shortly instead. There's never TOO much money a movie studio or a gaming company would like to make. If they see the potential to make more, most will go for it. Stupid studios/companies won't -> whoever was responsible for The Expendables. Doesn't matter if Anya was in GOW before. She's NOW promoted heavily, she's only now highly visible for people (and women especially) who are not fans yet, along with FemShep and Uhura. Just because GOW already sells a lot doesn't mean MS wouldn't like to see it sell even better.

EDIT: Ugh.... ponies....

Skyscrapers? Not only did you start the construction process but I'm sure sure you've made plenty of posts idolizing Kaidan that dwarf that. But whatever makes you feel better.

She's now promoted heavily? You mean being in a trailer and a few screenshots? Let me sum up this entire situation for you. All of the hot air about FemShep is just a diversion that gives Bioware some free press. Female characters in video games is nothing new, nor as the ability to play as a female. Meanwhile this whole BlondeShep crisis seems to be a case of some of the FEMSHEP STRONG crowd blaming the evil "white straight male gamer" for voting.

And to my fellow XX-chromosomes out there, what initially drew you to Mass Effect?  What do you want to see
in ME3?  And how do you feel the marketing goons should address you and others who haven't picked up the series yet?

Well I picked up ME because I was looking for an RPG after a loooong year of playing MMO and got bored. I took it upon recommendation of G4TV's X-Play's 'Games for Cheap Bastards.' I got it for $20 at Amazon. I never
knew it came from the same guys who did KOTOR and BG. No clue. And boy am I glad I took that recommendation. I loved it.

In ME3, I do want a good chunk of the end game. Like blow my mind away, Bioware. I replayed the SM so many times over and over. Even though I made the same choices during that final mission, but the tension, atmosphere is just awesome!

Um... I think the game overall has been gender neutral so far. If I'm wrong, my apologies. Oh and that 'Barbie' Shepard issue? I can see why some people have problems with that. Personally, I kind of wished they used the original default FemShep, but hey what's done is done. I always customize my Shepard and I say my Shep is so much more prettier than the default one.

Those who'll want to play it will play it. Those who have no interested in playing will not. I like to let people find out for themselves whether by curiosity or peer pressure.

So yaay for ME3!!!

That will reach the female gamers that may not have even known there was an option to play as female. How many guys I've seen who didn't know that either? Plenty. And even few screens and trailers with Anya is more than 0 official FemShep content BioWare released for ME1/2. No to mention that the news about female gears was reported everywhere. And just as with FemShep, it surely reached and sparked additional interest of potential female consumers.

No, but I do find your obession with him downright disturbing (comparable to the craziest of the old Talimancers). And yes I will claim those posts as among the most TL;DR on these forums, but I don't know what you find so humerous about that.

Would they be living under a rock to not have heard of the ME series? I would argue another form of marketing is just as effective. So what's the big deal about this supposed previous lack of FemShep stuff and the FemShep CE cover for ME3? "News about female Gears was reported everywhere"? Well yes, most gaming news sites do report such a thing like they reported about the two new Gears in GoW2. Yet only a few rags and wannabe journalists bothered rambling about diversity and all of that.

That's not quite true. They did have a tiny bit of Femshep promo material for both.  For ME1, a number of the gameplay videos (especially the class ones) had Femshep in them.  I'm pretty sure this is the only Femshep promo screenshot for that game though:

ME2 on the other only had four screenshots and no video material (oddly, not one of them is of the default Femshep):

You don't have to live under the rock to not know there's a FemShep available to play. Seriously, if you're not a fan of some series, you may not know almost anything about it. And just as with many girls that didn't know about FemShep option, I've seen plenty of guys who didn't know about it either. Tons of people make impulsive purchases based on 'something good they've heard about the game from the press/friends' or even good looking boxart with few "10/10!" or "BAFTA Best Game winner!" stickers on it. That's why the publishers put these stickers on boxes in the first place. That's why boxes are designed to appeal to people who don't know anything about the game. That's why they release tons of feature videos showcasing as many elements of the game as possible. Most of the potential customers don't spend time on fansites/forums, many make a decision to purchase a game based on one review in a magazine/site they trust and perhaps few official trailers. They don't search YouTube for walkthroughs and don't stuble upon FemShep in them.

Gonna quote this for truth.  I came late to the ME series (played ME1 for the first time about a month after ME2 came out).  I stumbled across a used copy of Mass Effect 1 in a Gamestop and said "Oh yeah, I think I saw some good reviews about that, may as well pick it up."  I had no idea that it was the kind of game that let you pick your own gender.

If you don't spend all your time on video gaming websites (...like I do now, but I didn't back in the day), you aren't going to know these things.  You don't have to be a Farmville-level casual gamer to miss it.

after reading one very disturbing fan fiction, I aint touching anything, that Pinkie Pie has to offer.

P.S. to be fair, its not just femshep that was underrepresented in Marketing. it was character customization in general. in ME1 especially - if you only saw the cover of the game and didn't follow detailed news, the impression you'd get that it was like Witcher. that you don't get to customize your character much, you only get to chose how the story progresses once you start playing.

its gotten better now, though.

This too. Just as many people didn't know it was possible to play as female, many thought there was no face customization. And based on the fact 80% made their own faces, it's obviously a HUGELY used feature and could be a big draw if promoted.

I just started playing games a few years ago. Picked up Dragon Age and loved it. Asked the guys at Gamestop what other game like Dragon Age is out there. He said you have to try Mass Effect. I was reluctant at first because I thought you couldn't play a female character. For some unknown reason I went ahead and bought both.

I am so glad I did. I fell in love with the story. I couldn't believe how it drew me in, there is just something special about that game. The Mass Effect series is my ultimate favorite. Plus I love charging around the battle field ;) I am still playing both of them. I start a new character in ME1 then import into ME2. I just cannot put it down for long.

I cannot wait for ME3! I think I will be taking a day off from work when it comes out :D

I'm a woman who's been playing games since the days of atari 2600. But as the next gen consoles came, I fell in love with the freedom of sandbox games (GTA, to be specific). Choosing where and what to do for yourself, as opposed to following a set list of objectives in order.

I borrowed Mass Effect from a friend's son. Did not know it was an RPG. Never played one before. Didn't know anything about the ME world, except that it was in space, and being a lifelong Sci-Fi nerd, tried it. It was more complex and deeply involving than any game I've ever played in my life. And I could play as my own gender for once, without wearing ridiculously short shorts or high heels! And she's a badass!

I LOVE THIS SERIES. Thank you for making femshep act like a real woman, who is strong and smart, but has emotions. She can be hurt just like any of us. She's almost real to me. Actually, she's the me I wish I could be.

I feel this way, too.  FemShep feels like a real person (ManShep does too, although I'm not a man, so maybe I'm missing something subtle).  I think the last game where I connected so strongly to the female main character was No One Lives Forever.  Cate Archer, anyone?

On the flip side, games like Fable II where you can play as a female are just not in the same league as the Mass Effect series.  I think this is because the main character in Fable II was just an empty shell -- you provide the personality (or lack of one) inside your own head.  Bioware has invested a tremendous amount of energy giving the Shepard character (in either gender) a life and soul.

Well to the OPs question towards guys that play ME series, I do find the female character in Mass Effect series to have a better voice acting than the dude Shepard. But I am also one of the types that just chooses female characters if the option is availiable when playing video games too. My reason behind this is I would rather stare at a female pixel butt than a males pixel butt for 60+ hours of playing a game.
