Female Gamers and ME3

It's certainly not a phenomenon that's exclusive to men. I wouldn't design, support, or vote for an ugly male shep. In fact, I really dislike and can't identify with the GoW protagonists because of their creepy steroid ugly look. Some people just like their protagonists attractive instead of grizzled, independent of genre.

I'm a woman who's been playing games since the days of atari 2600. But as the next gen consoles came, I fell in love with the freedom of sandbox games (GTA, to be specific).
same here!
Had neighbors that would play Halo like crazy, they knew I liked RPGs so let me borrow Mass Effect. An RPG in space with morality choices that impact gameplay?! The star trek/star wars fan in me had a nerdgasm. Went and bought it the next day.
The story line and decision making is what sold me, being able to customize the character (looks and gender) was a plus. The amazing character development and voice acting drew me in. Then I realized there were LIs, another plus! Adds a new dimension to character interaction that I hadn't seen done in a game before. ME is one of the first games I could not wait to do a second, third, forth playthrough just to see the outcome of different decisions. Especially when those choices carry across more than one game!
The L4D series was my introduction to FPS games (love them!!), just played GOW2 for the first time and it was quite fun and enjoyable for a shooter. I enjoy combat in ME especially using additional talents such as biotics (and magic in DAO) but the RPG elements are really what draws me to BW games and I think that is a good focus if they are trying to target women.
Nutshell - show the epic-ness of the storyline and how the player's choices have a meaningful impact on the game

I'm not saying you shouldn't or can't have these features, but there is no saying how it will be received, what may seem subtle to you, will not be subtle to others...I mean romancing itself was a major issue of conflict in the first ME game...(the scenes)
Just because from your perspective it is acceptable doesn't mean from others it will be...thats the whole point I'm trying to get across, and from that we factor in the majority view.
I'm approaching this as unbiased as humanly possible, you may not like what I have to say, but I cite past factual points and take neither side. All I hope for is they do it subtly enough to not cause an issue, to what point that is, I can't say nor can anyone really know.
I'm done on this topic for now, take from it what you will, I'm just exploring the very real possibility here, I don't intend to offend anyone.
Yes, I suppose it is difficult for me to understand how the main demographic insists on being so overtly offended by and attacking such minor pittances. You'll still get your chest-pounding, women-wrangling adventures, gentlemen, don't worry yourselves so.Carfax wrote...
No, they were lambasted. After all, FemShep fanatics aren't exactly the most understanding sort of people to be sure. I've been posting on Bioware forums in one form or another for over a decade now, so I've seen lots of debates and arguements about this subject matter over the years, and it's always been hotly debated.
According to you, there aren't enough hardcore female gamers for this kind of marketing to be justified. Now you're citing these exact same hardcore female gamers as the reason Bioware's marketing is justified. Which one is it?
I'm also not opening your other cans of worms, but thanks for the offer
Ok it seems you are a troll, or a hypocrite, take your pick.
Or a moron if you don't know what I'm referring too. Sorry I couldn't help responding, sometimes these things need to be called out, especially in the case of trolls. Wonder if my font colour is spot on...

Ditto. I was really pleaseantly surprised when I first began playing ME. The sad part is that even in the main ME site there was little information concerning a choice of gender. However little there was had to be intently searched for. Many do not go beyond the home site for info on a game. The Femshep trailer is a huge step in the right direction for the considerable female base. I also bought ME on a whim. If I had seen the simple text ANYWHERE "You can choose your gender" I would have been more interested and I'm male. The trailer will definitely attract more female gamers and more gamers in general.leggywillow wrote...

Would they be living under a rock to not have heard of the ME series?
You
don't have to live under the rock to not know there's a FemShep
available to play. Seriously, if you're not a fan of some series, you
may not know almost anything about it. And just as with many girls that
didn't know about FemShep option, I've seen plenty of guys who didn't
know about it either. Tons of people make impulsive purchases based on
'something good they've heard about the game from the press/friends' or
even good looking boxart with few "10/10!" or "BAFTA Best Game winner!"
stickers on it. That's why the publishers put these stickers on boxes in
the first place. That's why boxes are designed to appeal to people who
don't know anything about the game. That's why they release tons of
feature videos showcasing as many elements of the game as possible. Most
of the potential customers don't spend time on fansites/forums, many
make a decision to purchase a game based on one review in a
magazine/site they trust and perhaps few official trailers. They don't
search YouTube for walkthroughs and don't stuble upon FemShep in
them.
Gonna quote this for truth. I came late to the
ME series (played ME1 for the first time about a month after ME2 came
out). I stumbled across a used copy of Mass Effect 1 in a Gamestop and
said "Oh yeah, I think I saw some good reviews about that, may as well
pick it up." I had no idea that it was the kind of game that let you
pick your own gender.
If you don't spend all your time on video gaming websites (...like I do now,
but I didn't back in the day), you aren't going to know these things.
You don't have to be a Farmville-level casual gamer to miss it.

First, there's a look of confusion that borders on, well...disdain. Then the question, "Why are you playing video games?"
After some digging I find that it comes down to this stereotype of video games that seems to be lurking in more than a few females' heads. Namely that Video games are either, Massive Multiplayer COD type stuff, or.....Wii.
It's hard to get them to understand. I'm still plotting, tho.

Poser are everywhere . Not just woman.
@Raps . People that are genuinely interested in you , will be interested in what you do. But what you described me is what i call a sheep. They follow the mainstream.
He/She have a strong negative opinon on videogame because that what they need to do to 'feel' accepted .
It's the same has people who fake out interest just to be accepted by a group of people they label has cool.

I agree. There is a sad, sad stereotype surrounding video games for girls, that it isn't something they're "supposed" to do. I am the only one of my female friends who plays video games a lot, and the two others that play only have Wiis and occasionally play whatever party game is popular at the moment.
Oh man, one time I was finishing up ME2's Suicide Mission when some of my friends came over. During the cutscenes I would wander off to grab a drink or chat, and one of my friends asked "How does the game keep playing when you walk away?" I stared at her and said "It's... it's a cutscene." "A what?" "...oh boy."
The point is, a lot of girls (and future gamers of both genders) really don't know just how much of a storytelling medium video games can be. They don't know about interactive video games that let you design your own characters. Spreading the word about that by publicizing more of the options in a game besides "LOOK AT THIS GUY! LOOK AT HIS GUNS! THINGS DIE WHEN YOU SHOOT THEM" certainly isn't going to hurt anything.

And to my fellow XX-chromosomes out there, what initially drew you to Mass Effect? What do you want to see in ME3? And how do you feel the marketing goons should address you and others who haven't picked up the series yet?
Initial draw? Honestly, sex-box scandal story on Fox News. Made me laugh my head off. Then I looked up the game, saw it was by BW, saw you could play as a girl, and I bought it.
marketing? they're doing a good job by noticing femshep these days. whatever you think about the methods, i approve of the femshep notice.
The Admiral rambles about storytelling, female leads, and marketing. Also, did I mention the hot guys? Mass Effect has hot guys.
yes. it really does.

"Alright, I'm here to save the galaxy and... Helloooooo...."
oh, and re: women not gaming?
