Basically, tis refreshing to have a female protaganist of strong char who can hold her own using her own strengths and skills or tries to (when odds are against her) and never gives up. In ME3, perhaps she would have to resort to a side of herself never seen in ME1 & 2, to ensure the survival of organics against the Reapers. That would be an interesting development.

FemShep is no H. Harrington, there is hardly any time in the games for such indepth char exposition, but she's almost as good. Image IPB  It all depends on the writers, of course.

Yay, a lady thread.

I get to play as my own gender with massive alien bodyguards and sniper rifles... IN SPACE, with Seth Green as my pilot. What else could top that?

Do a shot every time Shepard says "I should go" or any variant thereof.  Then... then things get really interesting...

But yes, running around with sniping alien bodyguards and Seth Green should be sufficient enough to capture anyone's interest.

Damn, I thought I'd invented that game!

I wasn't drawn to the Mass Effect series because it has strong women in it. I was drawn to it because it looked good. I enjoy games with story, good narrative, good gameplay, and choice. While it's great if there are good, strong female characters in a game, I also appreciate it if there are just well-realised, non-stereotypical characters of all flavours and persuasions in games. While I appreciate the opportunity to play as a female, and think more highly of a game if it gives me that opportunity (and if it gives me the opportunity to play whatever sexual orientation I want as well), I just like games that think hard about their characterisation across the board.

I'm rather outspoken on the issue of gender fairness, equality, call it what you will. At the same time, I feel uneasy at the suggestion that I should somehow be able to engage more with a game if it throws women a bone (so to speak *cough*). There's sometimes an element of being patronised buried away there. Not all the time, but often. I enjoy a good game if it's a good game, not because of what's between my legs.

ME2 made me curious due to the amazing cutscenes and the dialogue system, so I thought I'd probably be able to suffer through the combat, since I've never been good at RTS. Figures, as soon as I started I loved the combat just as I loved the plot.

Despite being a girl gamer, I never quite got the fascination with FemShep. She's just as good as MaleShep, no doubt, but I always preferred playing Sheploo. MaleShep makes me swoon over him the entire game.

I doubt that ME3 will be marketed as a RTS game. It's dialogue system, relationships and choices are what makes the game special, there's no way they'll forget about that.

I long for the day when we're all just gamers, instead of female gamers, gay gamers, black gamers, older gamers, etc.

we already are.

you're the ones labeling yourselfs as something different.
when "female gamers" make threads about themselves and how marketing should appeal to them more, and blah blah blah. they're seperating themselves from everyone else, saying that they are different. that they cant possibly like the same things as male gamers.

they claim they want equality, but then demand they get their own special trailer and boxarts.

just seems a bit hypocritical to me lol

I think it is cool that Bioware avoids traditional stereotypes but they are in danger of creating a few of their own. You have the touchy feely guys like Carth Onasi, Alistair and Jacob and you have the super-beaches like Jack, Morrigan, and Princess Lian. I wish they would switch it up more often. We female gamers like variety too but we do not just want the roles reversed.

Yes I know that there have been crazy male characters in the games but they are usually dumb, ultra-violent and are not LI thankfully.

I agree with you there Clonedzero. At least on this part: "they claim they want equality, but then demand they get their own special trailer and boxarts."
I think the cover will be maleshep with his omniblade in front of some reapers and earth, right?
And you would prefer femshep in a comparable picture?
I would love that, but I would actually see it as a cover for male buyers. I don't want a dude to look at me the whole time from a box cover, I want a chick.

to be completely honest. i cannot understand why anyone cares about the boxart at all. well their marketing department does, but the fans? i dont get it at all.

unless you're a weirdo that uses the boxart as like a picture over their dining room table, then most likely all you'll see of the box 90% of the time is the spine when its on the shelf.

they could make the cover a fornax thing or something and i wouldnt care. or put techno turian on the cover. doesnt matter to me, has zero impact on the game lol

Haha, that's essentially my feeling on the subject. The box is going to be sitting in the drawer 99% of the time, so why would I care what it looks like?

Honestly, I love the strength of women in the ME games.

Too often they're seen as weak and fragile. Here, they kick serious ass.

At least 95% of them do. Ha.

Have stopped at end of page 1 (damn long reads)

I only tried mass effect because of the fps/rpg mix it gave me initially (big deus ex fangirl, tho will pirate dx3 first because of dissapointment ex 2), went to buy it before finishing eden prime...

It was so well executed playing as femshep that it became a criterium for me if can play the main character as an female in almost any game... and it made me a bioware fan.... i still await the day my bf hangs me for praising them^^ (went ahead and bought bioware games that went before)

I sincerely hope i will not regret pre-ordering me3collectors for many reasons which include the strong and well executed woman (and if the drm sucks, ill pirate it and have a pretty box in my collection..)

Oh and Wrex ftw ! :D Where's my Wrex romance!!

Wow. Another gender superiority thread!

Mass Effect has strong female characters and elements that could appeal to female gamers if marketing would better address them DOES NOT EQUAL my vagina beats your penis like rock beats scissors.

FemShep and other female characters ARE JUST AS STRONG AS DudeShep and other male characters, not inherently better than.

Ok. I see what you want to say!

Im glad that ME decided to put in so many strong female characters. Theres not many games out there that have strong females as NPC's let alone protagonists. :P
Gotta love the girl power :D

I love how the little boys are whining about other people whining about box art. If you truly don't care you wouldn't bring it up. As you admit, it doesn't affect your game in the slightest, just YOUR sense of entitlement to remain exclusive, I supposed. LOL.

I'm thinking about putting LOL after all my arguments from now on. It's kind of like the technique that Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity claim to use. Smile or laugh in a jovial manner in an attempt to make look like your own point is SO obvious, make your opponent's look ineffectual, and then paint anyone who continues to argue with as mean and combative. I mean, can't we all be friends? LOL.

@ ShadedPheonix -- Sadly, the only thing that ME writers have confirmed about new ME3 romances is that there will be NO Krogan love, straight, gay or otherwise.

So it's wrong for people to whine about people whining about the box art, yet it is okay for those people to whine about the box art initially? How the hell does that make sense?

Boo hoo, some people don't like blond femshep cover, yet votes are votes. It's not like you are going to frame your ME3 box and put it on the wall right?

It doesn't make sense if you are arguing that people whining is a bad thing (yet you do it too) and that it shouldn't matter who is on the box! If you are arguing that you think it is important to the franchise that the iconic image of the ME franchise should be Sheploo, then you would have a leg to stand on. I may not agree with you on your position, but I couldn't call you a hypocrit for holding it. By saying it shouldn't matter you undercut your own argument.

Agreed. It's okay to whine about people voting for the "wrong" FemShep but pointing out the stupidity in whining about it is wrong? Blond FemShep won, deal with it. I prefered one of the other options, but in the end it isn't a big deal.
