So I think? You are aware that it's in the game right? It can be played. Merrill doesn't turn into some spineless wreck just because you rivalmance her. She doesn't become completely dependant on Hawke either not anymore so than with the friendshipmance.

I'm aware of the opinion difference by this point, rest assured.

Of course, I believe she has nothing to regret anyway (at least not in her general idea) and the rivalry path involves falsely convincing her that she does, which I suspect can't be healthy.

What's funny is that Bioware tried to make all of the characters look unique and yet Aveline's guard outfit and Merrill's white outfit are just retextures, lol.

On the friendpath, she shows Hawke doubt about the eluvian project...she wonders if she should have stayed with her clan, she thinks she might be doing the wrong thing, etc. 

The rival path doesn't do a good job of showing this, I don't think.

That's not even true.

Look at one of the ugly dalish girls and compare the outfit to Merrill's white outfit.

Look at the generic plate armour and compare it to the Kirkwall guard outfit (not captain).

I'm not entirely sure how Aveline temporarily wearing a guard uniform during her year as a guardsman is all that unexpected. Uniforms tend to be, you know, uniform.

I'm more surprised they went to the trouble of designing a unique outfit for her to wear during the prologue, which is replaced and never seen again. You'd think they could've just stuck her in some generic Ferelden army style mail and settled for that.

It's not qute the same. Different mesh, different texture map. Merrill's has the collar, for instance. The generic Dalish one is lower res and stops at the neck, and has bare flesh where Merrill's has chainmail. But yeah, otherwise it's the same art design. Quite rightly. Why wouldn't Merril wear Dalish armor?

Though the glow-in-the-dark thing is a bit unnecessary. Makes her banter with Sebastian hilariously hypocritical, too. Looks much nicer with an earthtone retexture. And Ish's scarf mod.

She does wear it in the third act when she's talking to Sebastian about how Hawke should be Viscount. Throws me for a loop every time. I guess she's supposed to be in casual wear there instead of her uniform... but her intro gear is armor too! They couldn't slap her in some commoner clothing? (I know, the commoner clothing is all dresses. Well, it shouldn't be. Two birds with one stone.)

I disagree strongly, however. Merrill fell every bit as prey to Audacity as Marethari did, and if she wants to avoid repeating the obsessive behavior that nearly destroyed her, instead of simply refocusing it on Hawke, or whatever else next strikes her fancy, she needs to recognize that. If she's to have self-worth, it needs to be real; she needs to understand that she's valuable for who and what she is, not for what she can do with the mirror or what she means to Hawke. Letting her continue to associate her self-worth with the mirror project (or with the Hawkemance) does not achieve that.

This is very well said.  This is pretty much the conclusion I come to, and why I end up feeling that the non-romanced rivalry path with Merrill is the best.  There are nice things about the friendmance, but ultimately I do feel like it's just too unhealthy.  

I do think she's a well written character, though.  Many people disagree, but she's pretty much the only one I've felt inspired to talk about.  All the other ones were boring to me or else their issues seemed self-evident enough not to warrant much discussion.

Lol I like how of all the companions the defense force came for Merrill. Heh.

I dislike how people put all the blame on marethari to handwave Merrill's actions. I have to agree with Anders on that part of it... "the world is poorer for having you in it instead of her." I mean I would have been happy to see merrily actually pay the consequence of her actions. Yet people live her so much they put themselves in harm's way for her. I see merrily as independent, but blindly so. She can't see consequences to others. Plus I agree about the single handedly taking on saving the dalish. With some mirror that is going to fix everything, yeeahh. Sorry I can't jump on board with her. She is blindly walking into these things giving up clan, family, and even her status as first... for what? So in the end we can say .. "told you so?" As I said.. I don't want to play mother hen watching out for her blind devotion.

I have to say I rivaled varric once and he was a total douche. Spreading rumors about hawke instead of stories. Insulting hawke to their face. I found it hilarious, but yeah he was a total ass on rival. Still, because of his swagger I couldn't dislike him even when he goes "if anyone is good at sitting on their ass and eating bon bone it would be you, hawke." I giggled myself to death... thanks a lot ass!
