True, the good characters are those that we love and hate and love to hate, plus we got a good forum where we can express our fury at the opposition!berelinde wrote...

Intelligent debate is a great deal of fun. We're lucky the writers gave us such frustrating characters to talk about.

Well, I'm guess I'm a weirdo (or mostly likely an easily pleased idiot) becaused I loved and adored all of the characters. I engaged with personally and empathized with each character so there was no room for dislike or indifference for me. Some I loved more than others, Fenris and Isabela would be the two I adored the most, but after those two, I pretty much loved the rest equally. I saw vibrancy in all of the characters and also saw all of their flaws.
So yeah, and now I'm going to Pollyanna Sunshine my way on out, but not before I spread more flowers and rainbows.

I have to say I rivaled varric once and he was a total douche. Spreading rumors about hawke instead of stories. Insulting hawke to their face. I found it hilarious, but yeah he was a total ass on rival. Still, because of his swagger I couldn't dislike him even when he goes "if anyone is good at sitting on their ass and eating bon bone it would be you, hawke." I giggled myself to death... thanks a lot ass!
<3 Varric
Even characters in-game acknowledge how ineffectual Hawke is.
Ha! This is pure gold.
My two favorite DA2 characters, Aveline and Varric, know exactly what Hawke is.

Simply put, it's your game. Like who you want for what reasons you want. Trying to force that view on others is asinine. But bashing others for who/what they like is also asinine.

Indifference.
Everyone has the right to feel whatever they want with regards to any character.
Not sure what else I should feel.

Reasonable. I just have issues with other people hurting them, even in their own games. I'm not sure why.alex90c wrote...

How do I feel about people who like characters I don't? No big deal. No two people ever like all the same things. Fiance likes avocados but they make me gag. Somehow, our relationship has survived this obstacle.Xilizhra wrote...

The only time there's a problem is when fans get carried away and start with the "Your opinion is invalid" approach to character debate. Everyone has opinions, and failure to understand the reasoning behind someone else's does not make them invalid. It doesn't help that some of the characters espouse views that have real world counterparts, and this gets dangerous. It's like playing catch with a wasp's nest. RL is RL, and that's fine, but DA2 is a game.

I once argued the merits of killing my beloved Morrigan in Witch Hunt, after I saw the few who did get swarmed by those who didn't understand.

Well... odds seem good that Merrill would rather die herself than see so many innocents do so. So I could accept it happening, but I'd do my utmost to find some kind of alternative beforehand.KnightofPhoenix wrote...

This. I am indifferent to people liking characters that I don't. I only get annoyed when people start personally insulting the fans of a character, such as "Anders fans are disgusting and they glorify terrorism and they should be ashamed! RABBLE RABBLE."

From what I remember in conversation with her she does state that she thinks they are some sort of communication devices but I don't remember her ever stating how this would help. Wouldnt you need other active communication devices in order for it to do anything if she got it fixed?
I guess I don't care much for Merrill because her story doesn't make any sense to me. I do not see how fixing one Eluvian will somehow save the Dalish who don't look like they need saving anyways from where I am standing. Not in that way anyway.

What I never understood about Merrill is why she seems to think fixing the Eluvian will somehow safe her race. I get that the Dalish like to recover stuff from their past (though I must admit I kind of agree with Fenris when he sees no real point in it) but the way Merrill talks about saving her people suggested to me that if she doesn't fix the Eluvian they would all suddenly drop dead or something.
That is how I view her. OMG mirror must fix now or all Dalish will die...next week!
But for the people who love her, great...go for it. Don't worry be happy!

She is part of a people that has lost their whole heritage, their basis of life. It's almost entirely mixed with the human now. She finds this mirror, a piece unlike any other artifact that her people has ever encountered from their past. She decides to study it and find out if she can use it.
Now, you mention what you need in order to make it work, but Merrill doesn't know that.
Did you play which hunt in DA:O? The dalish doesn't even know what the mirror is at that point. How should Merrill know much more except for her general magical arts?
The demon calsl to her and the keeper, which eventually leads to it telling her about it and hwo to restore it.
Still, Merrill only knows it's a comunicable tool. In which hunt we learn that it's a portal, but Merrill doesn't know this.
(My own guessing is that the mirror is a portal that channels through the fade, hence how the demon intend to use it as a gateway.)
Again, I'm not trying to make you love her, but it seems to me that alot of the dislike for her comes from "we know better" and that isn't the case in game, Hawke has no more knowledge on the mirror that Merrill does.

The way she speaks of Tamlen it would make more sense to me if she at some point would have said she just wanted him back and she thinks the mirror will do just that.
In any case I am not trying to "hate" on her or anything, but it seems so... not sincere. Her keeper is the one responsible for reclaiming anything they can find on their heritage and she continuesly warns her to not do it, it isn't worth it. This makes me think she is/has either:
1. Way more under influence of the demon from the start than we realise
2. A stubborn kid who thinks she knows better than her elders
3. Some other motive for wanting to fix the mirror other than the supposed saving of all that is Elvhen
And about the mirror: I have no clue what it actually does, Which hunt didn't make that any clearer to me (as it is often suggested that the actual portalling thing might not be what it normally does, or where it leads to if it is) I was rather disappointed that she never actually finishes the bloody thing since I am rather curious about it myself. It is not the fact that she wants to repair it (heck lil selfish me would gladly sacrifice half of kirkwall to an abomenation Merrill if things go wrong if it ment I would finally know where Morrigan went) it is that, as I stated above, I don't trust her reasons for doing so.
Edit: About the "what you need to make it work" statement. I am iffy about that because she never speculates in conversation how it would actually work and how that would help her people much, not because she doesn't know. Just some speculation would have been nice. This just seems like she's saying "Ye I am doing this very dangerous thing but I have no clue what to do with it once I actually achieve my goal and repair it"
