Trap detection for companions

During my recent playthrough, I've had trouble with Varric detecting traps before my character stepped on them, or Varric will say something right before.  He has 40 cunning, though if I am expecting traps near, then I usually have to manually control him in order for him to spot the traps prior to someone stepping on them.  Is this common?  Do items that boost trap evasion help with trap detection or is detection based completely off of a rogue's cunning amount?

In Origins, rogues could spot traps from a mile away, even without any skill points into trap making, though in DA2, my rogue companions don't seem to notice them until I'm about to trigger one, if they notice them at all.  I just hate losing the xp gained for disarming traps after someone triggers one, and I'm eager to start a rogue playthrough in DA2 just so I don't have to keep controlling Varric in the more trap infested areas.

I'm not sure what the range for trap detection is. I did find that because Hawke tends to run off ahead when you're moving through an area, Varric is often the last person in the party to catch up (he runs slower in general). So he may be out of what would be considered line-of-sight.

I try to walk slow, especially if I'm expecting traps, to assist the rogue in spotting traps. Still, I find that when I'm controlling Hawke, I'm constantly triggering traps with no warning or a very late warning from Varric unless I'm actively controlling him. They should just give rogues a bigger range from which to spot traps. This was never an issue in Origins, unless I was blindly charging ahead. In DA2, Varric can be walking right beside Hawke and not notice a trap until Hawke's toe is right next to it.

I'd just like for my rogue companions to be better at spotting traps without me having to manually control them, or playing as a rogue Hawke.

Well if you want my impressions about traps:
- Playing rogue Hawke: detects every trap instantly when it's about 10m away.
- Relying on companions: detects every trap instantly when it's about through my stomach or up my ***

Well to be honest, I think the traps have a certain cunning requirement to be detected (or at least some switches do) and perhaps it has a correlation with the range and/or speed of detection. But even so, in my experience a rogue Hawke is the best trap detector, no matter the stats.

Isabela is awesome for detecting traps. She keeps up with Hawke speed wise. Thing is, Varric is a dwarf and generally moves slower than any of your other companions. Why? Shorter legs. You want someone to keep up and detect traps, go with Isabela or Sebastian Vale if you have him from the DLC. Just pump their cunning up to 40 and off you go.

I know some people don't like Sebastian or Isabela. But if you're not playing a rogue Hawke, best bet is to bring alone one of the other 2 rogue companions. Varric is a cool character sure, but for trap detection he pretty much sucks.

Any rogue's detection range is based on their location, not yours. The relatively short detection range makes relying on your companions not the best idea. The only way to ensure you find all traps the first time through is to do some recon with a rogue first, or just play the rogue the whole time. I typically just quicksave often so if I step on a trap, I can reload.

Trap detection does not require line of sight. Also I don't think rogue Hawke has any better detection range than your rogue companions. Increasing cunning may increase detection range -- it does seem that simple traps were detectable from far away with a high cunning.

I don't know what bonus to evade traps does. It might allow you to pass over a trap without tripping it.

FYI, Simple -> Standard -> Complex -> Master requires 10 -> 20 -> 30 -> 40 cunning (subtract 10 for every Bonus to disarm traps) to disarm.

Thanks for the replies.

It sucks that they actually took Varric's short dwarf legs into account to make him walk slow, and thus not be very quick in spotting traps.

I was wondering if I was missing something, or if there was any reason to raise cunning past 40 for trap detection purposes.

I'll just bear with Varric for now and look forward to a future rogue playthrough, where trap detection should be less of an issue.

Have you ever seen a rogue walk into a trap, and do the Evasion backflip to leap out of its range, taking no damage? That's "evade traps." I suspect it's a check against the same value as disarming the trap. Items that improve it presumably behave the same as items that improve lockpicking or disarming (multiply your Cunning by 1.5 for purposes of that check).

It's actually generally counterproductive, I find; during the Hadriana quest, for example, there are those mages that stand on platforms that trigger horizontal fire plumes. A rogue with a high Cunning will automatically Evade those flames every time... making it impossible to get to the mage. A warrior can just walk through the fire, eat the ten measly damage, and beat the mage into paste.
