Good design of moral choices, good dialogue and challenging adversaries.
It will play out well in the next game (ME3).

*Virmire, for the talk with Sovereign, the Kaidan/Ashley decision and the beautiful landscape
*Noveria, for the many different ways you could get the pass.
*Ilos, for the mood
ME2:
*Reaper IFF, for the mood and the scary logs that made the Reapers real.
*The suicide mission, for its tactical setup and the tension - but minus the scene at the Reaper larva, including the conversations.
*Arrival, for its stealth elements and for bringing home what is at stake.

Runner up is the Suicide Mission: The tension and pacing were just outstanding, IMO, and it made you really think about what choices you were making.

Everything about LotSB was done so well. Even the catchy music. If you have a Liaramancing Shepard, it's even better... the romance angle in LotSB is one of the best relationship arcs in the entire series. LotSB is what all DLC should aspire to be. (And I wasn't a fan of Liara beforehand, either).
The Suicide Mission is just epic. On my first playthrough, I was reading the Mass Effect Wiki to make sure I didn't screw anything up, and I was still on pins and needles the entire time. Like LotSB, also has very infectious music.

It's always nice to punish those who prey upon helpless victims.

It's Virmire for me all the way.
- Talk with Sovereign - My favorite exchange in either game by far
- Kaiden/Ashley decision
- Wrex decision
- Captain Kirrahe's speech
- Exchange with Saren
The beginning of the mission while driving in the Mako is beautiful. 2/3 biggest import decisions for ME2 come from this mission.
What is your favorite mission so far.
Edit: Since everyone else is listing multiple missions
Ilos & Citadel run was great from ME1. Mordin's loyalty mission, the Suicide Mission, and LOTSB from ME2.
Virmire is up there and I would say it is definitly my favorite ME 1 mission but as far as the whole series goes I also like the SM and LoTSB along with Virmire and the Battle of the Citadel.

3. Ilos and the Trench Run. The sense of a ticking clock is palpable, the meeting with Vigil is a nice contrast to the earlier encounter with Sovereign, and Geth are fun to kill.
2. The Citadel Tower. Dude, you fight up the side of the tower, as Sovereign looms above, getting bigger and closer all the time. Everything about it is just epic.
1. Virmire. Ties with Bioshock for greatest WHAM! moment ever in my personal gaming history. Wrex, the choice, and above all, "YOU EXIST BECAUSE WE ALLOW IT, AND YOU WILL END BECAUSE WE DEMAND IT".
ME2:
3. Lair of the Shadow Broker. Especially the final battle and the Illium section. Fast paced, well constructed levels and great interweaving of story and action. Only hurt by the hull battle being too long.
2. 'Old Blood' (Mordin's LM). Amazingly voice acted, develops Mordin's character well and gives us insight into the awful, necessary atrocity of the genophage. And gives us the best renegade interrupt in the game with "You talk too much".
1. 'Treason' (Tali's LM). The mission that made me a Talimancer. Sets the emotional impact high and doesn't let up or pull its punches the whole way, piling misery upon injury on our little engineer until it hits Joss Whedon levels, without it feeling forced. Gets so high up here because the action is short, challenging and sweet, Geth are ridiculously fun to kill, the dialogues are excellent, and Liz Sroka's voice work is jaw-dropping throughout.

ME2: Suicide mission of course, but I also enjoyed Thane's loyalty mission. The whole perp-sweating thing was great fun. Excuse me whilst I go and play LA Noire now...

The level design is outstanding (being able to see the interior of other playable areas of the base from inside the base all the way across the map is awesome!). Best of the series so far.
The music is the best in the series as well, like a cross of the heavy electronic instrumentation in ME1 with the fully developed compositional scope and feel of ME2.
And last but not least, it finally brings the story back around to the main conflict: the Reapers.

Glad to see someone else that liked Arrival while I wouldn't list it as a favorite it was enjoyable and unique (going solo) not to mention it got me pumped for ME 3.

No one has mentioned the Normandy Crash Site. You people disgust me.
It was... one of the more chilling, depressing moments in the game. The flashbacks, the cold tranquility of it all... in a way, it was beautiful.
It was also insanely boring and pointless. I need flashbacks of what happened 20 minutes ago YAY!
ALSO DOG TAGS!
no thank you.
1. Vrmire its been said already the tropicol planet with the hold the line and options that play over to the second game can't be matched. Wrex, watching 1 of my least favorite characters die (I shouldn't be happy about this but ugh) first show off with
Saren and meeting Soveriegn for the first time. Brilliant gaming I have nothing bad to say about the entire mission.
2. LotSB Taking out the Shadow Broker is a blast no matter how many times I do it. The boss fight against him is nothing special but everything else about this DLC is. From searching for clues in Liara's apartment to storming the base it is pure entertainment bliss. Also gives Liara romancers that extra umpf that makes it all worth it. I'm saying it right now but Vanguard fight with Tela is the best part of the entire game outside of the DLC!!!
3. Suicide Mission. Nevermind all the lame loyalty checks or the end boss

It is a a bit rediculous. I actualy like having the romances but only because they add something to my Shepard's story and makes that Shepard a bit unique in comparison to my other Shepards plus it gives us insight to the character we are romancing but the romances don't make the game so I think some fans get a little overly enthusiastic about them.

its got tons of atmosphere and that more desperate feel of having to gun down wave after wave of husk.
