"Rogues know how to disarm traps & pick locks" , yeah, sure. That's a game mechanics thing. But why does Sebastian, specifically, know how to do that? Those skills make sense for Isabela and Varric, but why would Sebastian know them?

Perhaps he learned how to do it to prevent innocents like children, and kittens from being injured by them. :P

From a game mechanics standpoint, people wouldn't want to take him with them if he couldn't do everything other rogues are able to.

Cause before he was a chantry brother he was a rougish prince, set on causing issues I am sure, what better way to steal from your parent then picking the lock and getting into their room. On that not my Seb always starts with super low cunning and can't open traps until I bring it up for him, so really Hawke teaches him to pick locks. The real question is why can't my mage pick a lock... I am no rogue and even I can pick a lock, with some help from youtube.

Sebastian acts as the eyes and ears of Elthina according to the codex. He obviously does some shady stuff on the side...though Varric hasn't caught him yet.

A bit more seriously, Sebastian wasn't particularly lily white when he was younger, so he may have learned those skills during his Rakish past letting himself into and out of ladies houses and bedrooms.

Because he's actually a warrior by temperment, except BioWare thought tighter class weapon restrictions would be ace this time around. Though even without that problem, it's good to remember that the rogue/warrior distinction is a completely artificial metagame concept and as far as rogue!Hawke and Aveline know, there's no difference between them whatsoever, they're both Ferelden soldiers. So a certain amount of "mechanics not quite suiting the story" is to be expected and handwaved now and then.

But if you really need an explanation, I'd go with rak72's. He's a wealthy prince, he's probably a sport hunter.

They have Varic. It's almost the same thing. Just as much bull crap comes out of his mouth as some people's keyboards. And just as much cool stuff as well.

Pre-Chantry Seb was much like Casanova from what I gathered in his banter/talks.

Answer A: Game Mechanics

Answer B: He was formerly an unrepentant rake who got up to all sorts of mischief. Lockpicking and trap disarming was presumably something he picked up while drinking and wh-ring his way across the Free Marches.

His faith in the Maker breaks the locks which bind you in fear and clears the snares of doubt and confusion from your path.

Religious people can't be mechanically inclined?

You might also note that his cunning is ridiculously low when he joins your party, meaning he's nearly useless at lockpicking and trap defusing during the parts of the game he's in, unless you spend 5-6 levels giving him nothing but cunning. I'd say that lends itself to story-consistent dilettante rogue ways during his youth, but no real dedication to the art.

One of the Chantry sisters probably kept locking herself in the lyrium stores, and Sebastian was the one sent to fetch her out.

Guess that's not a problem anymore, huh?

I'm more curious as to why he can pick locks. Bored in the castle, perhaps? Maybe, back in the days of him being a total horn-dog who hit clubs like piñatas, that was totally his thing. Which is really just further grounds for shoving him in a church with a Jesus Expy guarding his crotch, wouldn't you say?

Game mechanics. Like Leliana, chantry people are rogues by default. Were it not for that, Sebastian would not know how to disarm traps OR pick locks, I'm certain. His past involved easy conquests, not intrigue.
