Why not use the d-pad?

Those of you who've only ever played the PC version might not know but on the console versions of DA:O and DA2 you only get six quick slots - Square, Triangle, Circle/X,Y, B and R2/RT + Square, Triangle, Circle/X,Y, B. It just occurred to me: why not use the D-pads to get eight more slots? I guess it might not look so good on the screen but it might make the console versions play better.

The d-pad is actually useful for targeting with clumps of enemies.

The R3 and L3 buttons would be better suited as neither does anything useful at the moment.

I actually forgot about targeting since I always used the radial menu reticle-ish thing - I actually found it more precise and easier to use since I was never 100% sure where each button press was going to take me. Given the choice I'd rather have the extra buttons but I guess if people liked that targeting that might be why they didn't use it.

I second this, I can't stand the way they made the controls for console.

People have been wanting 100% mapable controls in console games for ages but it's apparently difficult to implement. Even if they were you'd only be able to map the controls there are so you couldn't make extra quick slots...

I don't see how it would be any different from any pc key bind interface I've delt with.
Simply leave the x button and movement, except the flip for lefties, out of the options and you cant screw it up.

Restore Defaults button would fix any screw ups the user made.

L3 / LS could swap between two "profiles". In each profile you'd have the six shortcuts you have now. That makes for twelve shortcuts and should be sufficient I think =)

that should have been weapon swap from the beginning. which could have led to the additional 6

Yeah but with a keyboard you're reasigning keys that already have functions - or at least the feature is there in the game even if it wasn't bound to a key (I remember VTMB in particular had about a dozen functions that hadn't been given a key by default) - but in DA2 for the consoles there're three skill buttons - if you could customise your controls you could put them to < ^ > but you couldn't turn three slots into seven.

At least I don't think so. I'm no computer scientician.

The weapon swap could have included a second set of open slots for abilities

bow Primary
square1, triangle1, circle1
Hold R2 + square2, triangle2, circle2

R3 = weapon swap = 2nd set of open ability slots to set

Dual Weapon on 2nd set
square3, triangle3, circle3
Hold R2 + square4, triangle4, circle4

the same thing can happen for different staff weapons, giving a mage another 6 abilities

I'm fairly certain the PC weapon swap mod works this way and was very easily done.
The move to not include a weapon swap was incredibly short sighted.

Everything else aside, it really baffles me why they took that feature out.
