Colonist has a tragic "dangers of the frontier" ring to it. And the "I Remember Me" side quest is one of the best in ME 1, imo
War Hero has a nice symmetry to the colonist background. It gives Shepard a "Never again on my watch" sense of determination.

You know, I never understood why Sole Survivor even qualifies Shepard
for the Spectres. It's awesome that Shepard didn't get killed.. but that
doesn't even speak to Shepard's ability to get the job done
I don't think it ever says Shepard was in command, and I would find it quite impressive that a human marine survived an attack from thresher maws at night, unprepared, etc. What job could he get done? Kill the maws on foot? That is unrealistic expectations considering the context of the when and what of Akuze.

Well the whole point of sole survivor is it shows Shepard has nerves of steel, and even under the most intense and extreme stress s/he won't give in to fear and panic.
Agreed, and that is a great quality for a Spectre to have. Just like the other backgrounds highlight a desirable trait for a Spectre.

Then again, my main is an Earthborn/War-hero desperate to leave his past behind him.

I think the point stands that a Thresher Maw is a threat comparable to a slaver band, in any case, especially since you cannot engage a Maw in space.
Surviving a thresher maw attack is very impressive, but I just don't think it works as prerequesite to become a Spectre. If Shepard was a seaman on a terran naval vessel and was the sole survivor after his ship was sunk would that make him a good candidate for the Spectres? Sure, it's impressive that he survived in the ocean when no one else did, but what does that say about his ability to get the job done?
War Hero at least indicates that Shepard can adapt to military situation and utalize all resources to his advantage.
Sole Survivor doesn't do this at all. Shepard just survived.

Not only was his Colony attacked by Batarians when he was younger, but he also ended up fighting a whole army of them...
