To me, Spacer is paragon because that is the only Shepard to have a "normal" childhood. Of course, my Sole Survivor was hit head-on by the realities of being a marine. He moved on from that, even though he still has nightmares from time to time. My current is a Colonist/Ruthless femShep. She is renegade, but she'll also do whatever she can to save any human colony in trouble because she's been on the other end and was saved by Alliance soldiers. Heaven help any batarians/slavers she comes across. After being pulled from the debris of her homestead and brought back to health, she discovered she had biotic abilities. She joined the Alliance and trained her biotics until few could match her. She modeled her combat style after asari commandos and uses an assault rifle in combat.

I like Colonist/Ruthless for both Paragons and Renegades. They seem to mesh well together. My favorite pre-service history used to be Sole Survivor, but I hate how it was handled in ME2.

 Colonist/War Hero

Colonist has a tragic "dangers of the frontier" ring to it.  And the "I Remember Me" side quest is one of the best in ME 1, imo

War Hero has a nice symmetry to the colonist background.  It gives Shepard a "Never again on my watch" sense of determination.

Colonist/Ruthless gives a nice sort of synergy and seems like the kind of individual that might attract Nihilus.

You know, I never understood why Sole Survivor even qualifies Shepard
for the Spectres. It's awesome that Shepard didn't get killed.. but that
doesn't even speak to Shepard's ability to get the job done

I don't think it ever says Shepard was in command, and I would find it quite impressive that a human marine survived an attack from thresher maws at night, unprepared, etc. What job could he get done? Kill the maws on foot? That is unrealistic expectations considering the context of the when and what of Akuze.

Well the whole point of sole survivor is it shows Shepard has nerves of steel, and even under the most intense and extreme stress s/he won't give in to fear and panic.

Agreed, and that is a great quality for a Spectre to have. Just like the other backgrounds highlight a desirable trait for a Spectre.

Always War Hero for the Paragon boost, and I like being a hero.

Also Spacer because I feel it fits well with War Hero.

Colonist/Ruthless is my favorite. Shepard's family is slaughtered by batarians, Shepard later annihilates batarian slavers on Torfan with no survivors, no prisoners taken. That sounds like Spectre material.

I'm surprised that earth born is the least favorite of the three

My favorite is Colonist/War-hero. It brings in a sort of 'Never Again' factor.

Then again, my main is an Earthborn/War-hero desperate to leave his past behind him.

Colonist and sole survivor. If you're going to be a spectre, a operative where you're usually on your own, you need to be able to survive and make it through the most desperate of situations.

I think the point stands that a Thresher Maw is a threat comparable to a slaver band, in any case, especially since you cannot engage a Maw in space.

Surviving a thresher maw attack is very impressive, but I just don't think it works as prerequesite to become a Spectre. If Shepard was a seaman on a terran naval vessel and was the sole survivor after his ship was sunk would that make him a good candidate for the Spectres? Sure, it's impressive that he survived in the ocean when no one else did, but what does that say about his ability to get the job done?

War Hero at least indicates that Shepard can adapt to military situation and utalize all resources to his advantage.

Sole Survivor doesn't do this at all. Shepard just survived.

Colonist/War Hero

Not only was his Colony attacked by Batarians when he was younger, but he also ended up fighting a whole army of them...

For my canon, I'm using Earth born with Sole Survivor. Though my second favourite options are Colonist/War Hero, which iakus described how I felt about that combination.

Spacer/ruthless. I'd imagine that growing up in a military family and without one place to call "home" made my Shep into a budding little sociopath who's desensitized to violence.
