[Dead Hippie]

Out of three playthroughs of ME1 (currently working on the third one - after playing ME2 about four or five times):
- Saved Ashley (and romanced her and stayed loyal to her in ME2)
- Saved Kaidan (romanced Tali in ME2)
- Will Save Kaidan (will romance Liara and will stay loyal to her in ME2)


So, as I point out, in my current ME1 playthrough, I plan on saving Kaidan. However, with just starting this playthrough (I'm just about to take down Fist and acquire Tali), I've (quickly) remembered how much I like both Ashley and Kaidan - which is making it hard to follow my plan.

So, finding myself in this little dilemma, has made me curious - Who did you save on Virmire? And why?
Was it a simple choice? (Kaidan outranks Ashley, so you saved him OR you simply saved your LI; etc.)

Edit: I do find myself liking Kaidan (ever so slightly) more than Ashley (most of the time) due to his calmer attitude (which is how my Shepard - a very calm Soldier who (very) rarely makes Renegade remarks (my Shepard's ideal/motto is: "Use Diplomacy to get to the source of problems. Only use insults/threats/violence when there is no other way.").)

50/50 I know who I'll save before I even become a spectre. I ahve Msheps who saveKaidan and fsheps who sve Ashley and everything in between.

I always save Kaidan. I roll Vanguard Sheps, so it's a no-brainer he's extremly useful to me in combat. And then there's the fact that he's (obviously) my favorite character in ME franchise and I've been hoping that it will possible to romance him in future games . I like Ash and I hate the Virmire situation, but Kaidan's the priority

I saved the LI (when applicable), and Ashley every other time because I always sent her with Kirrahe and I figured I could save as many people as possible by going to their rescue instead of babysitting the bomb and Kaidan.

Also I generally don't like Kaidan. He's boring. Ashley is a much more interesting character.

Out of 7 playthroughs I only saved Ashley once. Romanced or not, I enjoy Kaidan's character more.

Of my six Shepards, five of them saved Kaidan. My Paragon male and Paragon female saved Kaidan because he is a biotic and an Alliance officer (they're both biotics too, a Vanguard and an Adept). My two neutral characters, my male Sentinel and my female Engineer, both just liked Kaidan better (the Engineer romanced Kaidan and the Sentinel wanted to). Of my two Renegades, the female Soldier saved Kaidan so she could seduce/manipulate him, and the male Infiltrator saved Ashley (so he could hit that). I wish I had more "Ashley lives" savegames, but I had to make the decision for each character based on their concept, and it just turned out that Kaidan was the natural choice for most of them.

I've only managed to save Ash once, even though I love her almost as much as Kaidan.
I tend to mix it up. My "main" Shep sends Kaidan with the Salarians (as he is a higher rank) and then goes to save them all, leaving Ash with the nuke. Saving more people (and her LI) in the process.

 On my canon Shep I saved Kaiden because I think he is the better soldier and I actually liked him once I got to know him.

I always save Ash. Even though I always play as a Soldier, I like the added firepower she provides as opposed to Kaidan's biotics (though in ME2, I brought Miri on every mission and she's a Sentinel like Kaidan).

I've always saved Ashley. I have nothing against Kaidan, but he just didn't come across strongly enough for me. Not that he was boring, just not as interesting as Ashley. Even when I disliked her, and I did for a while, she came across as a more demanding presence in the story.

That and I almost always feel like Kaidan would somehow resent being saved over Ashley. Maybe it's just my guilt talking, but he seems like the kind of guy that would go out heroically. Ashley has a bit more to atone for, both for her family and her own personal hangups. Kaidan I can admire for that brief time he was in the story, and hope that Ashley will grow from his example.

That aside, I plan on saving him in the game I take to ME3. Both my brothers saved/romanced Ashley, so I'd like to see the alternate side of things.

The first time I played, I saved Kaidan, only because I was playing a Soldier, and I thought it was pretty redundant to have two. But afterwards I have saved them both equally. Well mostly, 3 to 2 because of the first case.

Which leaves the Salarians and Ashley in need of a rescue, the needs of the many and all that jazz.

Yeah yeah I know you don't have to save the person you sent with the distraction team to rescue the salarians themselves. But that would be metagaming in addition to making no damn sense, which I limit unless I am dead set on getting a different result.

That is pretty much the same reasoning in my main run.

Ashley on my canon "renegon" as she is a good friend (plus until recently I thought that to save Kirrahe & his team I had to pick the air tower and I prefer to have Kaidan arm the bomb).   Kaidan isn't really a friend, more of a trusted fellow soldier.  Unless he is romanced, which is why my paragon femshep saves him.   Those are my only two play-throughs that I do, so its best that both of them do different things anyhow.

To point out, the numbers of people you save on either route isn't really determined. You leave a team of (N) marines at the bomb site to rescue the team of (N) salarians (both represented in game as one NPC character who is easily taken out of you don't save them damn quick).

This is true, though if we're speaking of family, then my Sheps will also think about the fact Kaidan seems to be the only child of his parents while Ash has 3 siblings, so her parents will still have kids left if she dies, unlike the poor Alenkos

 First 7 playthrough's I saved Kaidan. because Ash was being racist to my bros Garrus and Wrex. Then she started hating my my LI Liara, and that was the final straw. Nuked her ass on Virmire.
Then I learned Kaidan out ranks you in ME2 in the Alliance. So I went back and saved Ash on the eighth playthrough. I can't have anyone undermining my authority on the Normandy.
I do like Kaidan better of the two tho. but he better..

I save Kaidan.

He annoys me a smidge less than Ash. And I send him with the bomb and for my Sheps the mission is the priority (paragon, renegade, whatever) so it's far more important to make sure that bomb goes off than anything else.

Saved Ash once for her romance though. Just sent Kaidan with the Salarians instead that time.

I've always saved Ashley. I have nothing against Kaidan, but he just didn't come across strongly enough for me. Not that he was boring, just not as interesting as Ashley. Even when I disliked her, and I did for a while, she came across as a more demanding presence in the story.

That and I almost always feel like Kaidan would somehow resent being saved over Ashley. Maybe it's just my guilt talking, but he seems like the kind of guy that would go out heroically. Ashley has a bit more to atone for, both for her family and her own personal hangups. Kaidan I can admire for that brief time he was in the story, and hope that Ashley will grow from his example.

I saved Ash -- and I hope I can tell her this in ME3 (because it would be a powerful revelation to her) -- because she is a woman. Plain and simple.

Archaic reasoning? Maybe. Sexist of me? Perhaps. But, for my Shepard, the choice was clear as water. I may have thought Ash was a b!tch, but women and children still exit the boat first in my book.

First run: Saved Ash because I was paranoid that Kaidan would still be trying to 'mance me no matter what I did. I was a serious derp on my first run.

Second run: Saved Ash because she was my LI. Dick Shepard cheated with Miri anyway.

Third run: Saved Kaidan because I thought he deserved to live at least once, being a pretty nice guy and all.

I plan on doing twelve runs total (a male and female for each class), and hopefully I can get the numbers to even out. I like them both, even though I slightly prefer Ash (she reminds me a lot of my best friend IRL). Usually, I try to get my decision to match what class I'm playing (maintain squad balance and all), but I can't help but goof up my system every once in a while because I'm a derp and so are my Shepards.
